When A Bad Guy Becomes Good (Semi-Good?)

Update: The gift card winner is…bn100!

When he first appeared in ANGEL OF DARKNESS, Sammael (Sam) wasn’t exactly the guy riding to the rescue on a white horse. Sam was a fallen angel, a guy who had fallen very, very far from grace. He knew all about sin, and Sam wasn’t afraid to kill in order to get what he wanted.

Actually, Sam wasn’t afraid of anything.

While I wrote ANGEL OF DARKNESS, I really became interested in Sam’s character. I wondered what would happen if he got to be the “hero” in his own tale.

I knew turning Sam into a hero would be a tricky business, but I’ll just go ahead and confess…my favorite heroes to write? They’re the bad guys. The men that, if they aren’t careful, could cross that line into evil-land. They’re dangerous, they’re powerful, and, in the right, desperate situation, they can also be just the men that my heroines need.

And when they are paired with their heroines, these men become more. More than just bad boys. More than just guys with a darkness growing inside. They can show strength. Courage. They can love.

But loving isn’t easy for them.

So Sam…I didn’t give him an easy time of it when I wrote his story (ANGEL BETRAYED). I forced his character to fight for everything that he wanted. After all, what’s a happy ending worth if you don’t have to fight for it?

In ANGEL BETRAYED, Sam has the fight of his life waiting for him. Lucky for Sam, the angel is one hell of a fighter.

Thanks for checking out my post! And, hey, how about a prize? I just talked about bad guys…but why don’t you tell me about your favorite “bad” girl/heroine? I’ll pick one commenter to win a $10 Barnes & Noble gift card. Good luck!

Why I Love Fallen Angels

Update: The winner of ANGEL BETRAYED is…Patricia K. Congrats!!
Five Reasons I Love Fallen Angels…

Okay, yes, I’m not exactly unbiased here since I have a whole series about fallen angels (and the next book in this series–ANGEL BETRAYED–will be out on 6/26!), but hey, I’m just sharing the angel love. ;) So why do I enjoy the fallen angels so much?

1. They aren’t perfect. No, if they were perfect, well, they wouldn’t be *fallen* angels, now, would they? These guys understand sin, and they know all about the price of temptation.

2. Wings. Sure, in my world, a fallen angel’s wings burn away when the angel plummets from heaven, but I’ve always thought it would be cool to see a guy who could fly. Ahem, that may be my superman complex kicking in.

3. They can kick ass. They’re immortal warriors, how can they possibly fear humans or vampires or werewolves? They don’t fear. Everyone—everything—else fears them. To me, that’s just tough and awesome all at once.

4. Despite all of their power, they have a weakness. Emotion. Fallen angels are hungry to taste the emotions of humans. Can you imagine what it would be like to live and feel nothing? Then, what if one day…you got hit with every single emotion out there? Talk about a rush. That rush might just be enough to make a man go insane…or enough to shatter the control of a fallen angel.

5. They smell good. ;) Seriously. During my angel research, I came across many references indicating that when an angel was near, folks reported smelling the sweet scent of flowers. (Of course, I had to incorporate this bit of lore into my Fallen books.) So maybe the next time you catch that scent in the air…just maybe it will mean that you aren’t alone. Maybe an angel will be close to you…

What do you think about angels? Particularly the fallen sort? Share! I’ll send an autographed copy of ANGEL BETRAYED to one randomly selected commenter.

Update: The two ETERNAL FLAME winners are: Hilleary Peterson and Terry F. Congratulations!

Hi, everyone! Hope you’re enjoying the long, lazy days of summer.

For me, summer is the perfect time for reading. Whether I’m in the backyard or chilling on the couch, I like to have a good book handy. Since yesterday was release day (I always look forward to those days), I’ll have to head to the store to pick up some new Bravas–or maybe I’ll download them for my Kindle. The ebook revolution certainly has made buying books easier. One click, and it’s mine. Sweet.

My TBR stack is currently about two feet high (this is the one full of paperbacks). As for my Kindle? Oh, yes, it’s loaded up nicely. Plenty to read. Just need a wee bit more time!

What about you? What does your TBR stack currently look like? Tell me and I’ll pick two commenters to win Kindle copies of ETERNAL FLAME. My most awesome publisher (thank you, Kensington Brava!) is currently offering ETERNAL FLAME for $2.99 on the Kindle. And, even if you don’t own a Kindle, you can still get this great deal. Just use the Free Kindle for PC program on your computer and you can start reading instantly.

But…two commenters don’t have to pay that $2.99. Two will be totally free. So, if you haven’t read ETERNAL FLAME, just comment to win.

Good luck! And enjoy your summer!

Writing for the Holidays

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010
Cynthia Eden Icon

My first Christmas anthology releases next Tuesday–THE NAUGHTY LIST will be out in plenty of time for you to develop some holiday cheer. I had such a great time writing this book. I think one of the reasons I enjoyed it so much was because I actually got to write the book during the holiday season. As I was writing the story, Christmas movies were airing on TV, the stores were full of gorgeous decorations, and the holiday spirit was definitely in the air. Sure made for an easy writing mood.

I generally write paranormal stories throughout the year, but I have to confess…I always have more fun during the month of October. I’m gearing up for Halloween, and I can’t wait to tell the stories about my monsters. In October, I usually have to force myself to stop writing–otherwise, I probably wouldn’t sleep. What can I say? I get in the Halloween mood just as much as I get in the Christmas mood!

I hope readers enjoy THE NAUGHTY LIST. My contribution to this anthology is “All I Want For Christmas.” There aren’t any paranormals in this novella–just a sexy Santa/cop. I like those guys. Pity I don’t actually see a lot of sexy Santa cops–do you?

And since the title of my novella is “All I Want For Christmas”–I’d like to know…just what do you want this year? Have you started thinking about gift ideas yet? My son sure has! We’ve got a list that is four pages long!

Have a great day!

Countdown Mode

Hi, everyone! Like my lovely friend Emma Lang, I am currently counting down the days until my next Kensington Brava release. Emma and I are release buddies–our books will both be available on Tuesday, June 29th.

I’m so looking forward to the release of I’LL BE SLAYING YOU–and I sure hope readers enjoy the book!

Sometimes when I start a book, I begin with a particular scene in mind and that scene inspires the entire book. Other times, a character will take shape in my imagination and the rest of the story develops from that character. For I’LL BE SLAYING YOU, well, none of that happened. :-)

Instead, I’LL BE SLAYING YOU came into being because…I thought of the title. One day, this title just popped into my head. I loved the title, and I immediately knew what type of story I’d write to go with it. But first, I had to set up the tale–actually, I had to set up the series. So I wrote the first book in my Night Watch series, ETERNAL HUNTER, and I introduced readers to my paranormal bounty hunters.

Then, when Jude’s story was finished, I turned my attention to I’LL BE SLAYING YOU. By this point, I pretty much had the entire story mapped out in my head. I started writing (it was around Halloween, so this made the tale twice as much paranormal fun for me), and my slayer story flowed quickly onto the pages.

I had a fabulous time writing this book. It was great to visit my Night Watch world again. And speaking of my Night Watch world…if you haven’t already taken my Night Watch Hunter quiz, here’s a link! Go find out which Night Watch hunter you’d be.

Turns out that I’m Jude Donovan–White Tiger Shifter. Guess I have an animal side. Do you? Or are you more of a slaying kind of girl? (Like Dee?)

Vampires, angels, and demons–oh, my!

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010
Cynthia Eden Icon

I like to write about paranormal characters. Okay, correction–I LOVE to write about them. And since signing on with Kensington, I’ve been able to write about some of my all-time favorite paranormals:

Vampires (I love strong, kick-ass female vamps)
Shifters (wolf, white tiger, and, yes, a dragon)
Demons (the badder, the better!)
Witches
A soul-eater (Yes, I said soul-eater! Luis was featured in the EVERLASTING BAD BOYS anthology)
Charmers

And now…I’m writing about an angel. Or, rather, a fallen angel. When angels fall, they can become very bad. :-) (Yes, bad in a good way–hopefully!)

It is so much fun for me to create paranormal characters. With supernaturals, you can imagine anything. No limits.

I read and write paranormals because I truly enjoy that “no limits” aspect. With paranormals, there is always more to the world that meets the eye. As a kid, I was afraid of the monsters in the dark. As an adult? Well, I can’t wait to write about them!

But what about you? What’s your take on the paranormals?

Happy reading!

Immortal Danger Contest!

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009
Cynthia Eden Icon

Hi, everyone!

I am very excited to say that, in just over a month (3/31/09), my next Kensington Brava paranormal romance, IMMORTAL DANGER, will hit store shelves!

Here’s the blurb for my tale:

BEING BULLET PROOF SUCKS—LITERALLY

Once, Maya Black was a kick-ass cop patrolling the streets of L.A. She still keeps the city safe, but nowadays her bad guys of choice include demons, werewolves, and assorted nocturnal scum. Something Maya knows a thing or two about. She’s a vampire—and not thrilled about it. Payback meet bitch.

Adam Brody hopes Maya is as dangerous as they say she is. He needs her to help rescue his niece Cammie from a ruthless band of vamps, and he’s willing to pay—in blood. Trusting her is another matter. Adam has never met a vampire who doesn’t lie. Then again, he’s never met anyone like Maya, who fills him with a desperate need that ignites into explosive, no-holds-barred encounters…

You can read an excerpt of my story here and if you’d like to view my trailer, well it’s right here. :-)

And if you’d like to win an autographed copy of this book…just leave me a comment telling me the name of your all time favorite vampire book or movie. Simple, hmmm?

I’d also like to announce that I will be launching a very big contest on my blog tomorrow (to run in conjunction with the release of IMMORTAL DANGER). If you get a chance, definitely stop by www.cynthiaeden.com/blog tomorrow!

Thanks!

It’s release time..

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

It truly seems like I just wrote this book yesterday, but–no, a year has passed and now MIDNIGHT SINS, my second single-title release from Kensington Brava, has hit bookstore shelves.

Here’s the blurb for the story:

Cara Maloan doesn’t look like a monster. In fact, the gorgeous blond nightclub singer possesses heavenly attributes that make Atlanta detective Todd Brooks sure there’s a higher power somewhere. But a twisted killer is leaving a trail of bodies in seedy hotel rooms across town. The male victims show no wounds–it’s as if the life was simply drained from them. And right now, mysterious Cara is Todd’s only suspect.

Cara knows it’s foolish to be so drawn to a man who thinks she’s a murderer. She also knows Detective Brooks would find the truth even harder to swallow. Cara is one of the Other, a race of powerful, paranormal creatures who live among humans. Cara’s particular abilities make men putty in her hands–all except this rugged, sexy-as-hell detective. But now someone, or something, has singled Cara out for serious payback…

As uneasy trust gives way to mind-blowing desire, Cara and Todd will go head-to-head with a killer whose mission is deeply personal, and who’s determined to serve up revenge that’s hotter than hellfire, and just as deadly…

In conjunction with the release of this book, I’m running a SIN A LITTLE contest on my site. Lots of great prizes–just in time for the holidays. :-)

Less Than a Week…and a Contest!!

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008
Cynthia Eden Icon

I now have less than a week until my first Kensington Brava release, HOTTER AFTER MIDNIGHT, hits stores shelves. And, um, yeah, I can’t wait. :-)

Today, I thought I’d do a bit of early celebrating by giving away an autographed copy of HOTTER AFTER MIDNIGHT to one commenter. Wanna win? Just leave me a comment about your all time favorite character. I’ll be back on Saturday to announce the winner.

Dr. Emily Drake, the heroine of HOTTER AFTER MIDNIGHT, was one of my absolute favorite characters to write. The woman has a hell of a painful past, but she’s overcome her childhood and is now one of the most respected psychologists in Atlanta. Of course, Emily isn’t your typical therapist. She only treats paranormal patients (and that’s where my story, or her story begins).

And, as part of my celebration, I thought I’d post an excerpt from HOTTER AFTER MIDNIGHT:

* * *

“How much do you know?”

Emily swallowed and tried to figure out just how much she should reveal.

His hold tightened around her.

He was the one sitting down, the one forced to look up at her, but Emily had the feeling she was the one in the vulnerable position. “I-I know you aren’t human.” Her voice came out softer, huskier than she’d intended.

She hoped Colin would leave it at that. Hoped he wouldn’t probe any deeper.

“Ah, baby, I already knew that.”

She tried to tug her hand free, but his grip was unbreakable.

“You’re the Monster Doctor, the one all the local ghouls go to see.” A faint trace of amusement underscored his words. But his eyes were watchful, intense, showing no echo of humor.

Her jaw clenched. “Let go of my hand.”

He smiled at her, and his fingers fell away from her wrist.

Emily immediately sprang across the room, putting several feet between them. Nice, protective space. “Look, if you aren’t here to discuss the case, then I want you to leave.” She turned her back on him, heading toward the front door.

“How do you do it?”

His words stopped her.

“How do you tell who is human and who isn’t?”

She heard the soft rustle of the sofa cushions as he rose.

“That’s a pretty interesting talent you’ve got there. And I’m just dying to know exactly how you do it.”

Emily cast a longing glance toward the front door. “I’m afraid you’re just going to have to live with your curiosity, Detective.” Because she sure as hell wasn’t going to reveal her innermost secrets to a stranger. Yep, letting the guy inside had been a definite mistake.

“Hmmm.” His breath blew against the nape of her neck. Emily jumped, startled to find him so close to her. The guy hadn’t made a sound when he’d crossed the room.

“I’d like to see your hair down,” he muttered, and his fingers brushed against the bun she’d yet to unwind.

She jerked away from him. “And I’d like to see you leave. Guess which one of us is about to get her wish?”

His hard lips curved into a smile, a smile with a hint of real warmth. “Tough lady, aren’t you?”

She’d had to be.

His smile slowly faded. “But trust me, I’m a hell of a lot tougher than you could ever dream of being.” And in a flash, he had her pinned against the wall. His strong, hard body pressed against her, his muscular thighs pushed between hers, shoving up her skirt, and his right hand locked around her wrists as he forced them against the wall over her head.

Her breath left her body in a startled gasp.

“Now let’s try this again,” he growled. “Just how much do you know about me?”
