We (readers and authors) talk about our favorite kinds of heroes. Tall, dark and handsome of course, but do we like brooding or humorous? Alpha or beta? Boy-next-door or sophisticated Continental?

But what about heroines? What kind of heroine do you like to read about–what type can you identify with? (Or wish you were like?) My heroines tend to be spunky and can pretty much hold their own, though they welcome help from the hero. Most of the time. Honestly, I wish I were like my heroines. If I ever came face-to-face with a werewolf or vampire, I’m fairly certain I would be a quivering mass of goo that gets eaten. And not in the good way.

So, spill! What kind of heroine do you like to read about? Or, if you need to do a little venting, what kind drives you crazy?

A couple of days ago I had a short post on my personal blog about never giving up on your dreams, whatever they may be. Don’t ever let someone tell you it can’t be done, or it’s silly or frivolous. Even if it is silly or frivolous, so what? Who ever said a dream had to be serious?

Several years ago, I was told by a boss that I couldn’t write. Well, not me personally, but me as part of a group of professionals to which I belonged. So I set out to prove her wrong. I’m just made that way. LOL If I had kept in touch with her, I’d be able to point to several e-novellas and my four Brava books and tell her she was wrong. There might even be some sticking out of the tongue involved, at least in my head.

So, tell me, if you dare, what your dreams are. What (or who) have you allowed–or not allowed–to get in your way?

Last month Cynthia Eden blogged about why she loves paranormals so much. Her #1 reason:

When it comes to the “bad” boy heroes, the paranormals rule. Whether the hero is a demon, a vamp, a kick-ass shifter, or even a fallen angel–these guys know how to be very, very bad–and I sure do love that!

That got me to thinking. (It happens sometimes…) I absolutely agree with Cynthia on this one, and have something more to add.

The paranormal bad boy is the ultimate anti-hero, just for the fact of his paranormalness. (Yes, it’s a word.) A vampire runs around biting people and sucking their blood–not exactly the stuff “normal” heroes are made of. Werewolves go all furry and snarly at least once a month (sounds like me on PMS, well, except for the furry part), and if folks aren’t careful they might just end up as a Scooby snack. The zombie hero… Yeah. I haven’t exactly gotten my head wrapped around that one yet, so maybe we’ll skip it for now.

It’s up to the heroine to help our paranormal bad boy rein in his more primal tendencies, and show him he’s worthy–and capable–of love. And that’s why I love paranormals so much!

No, I’m not talkin’ ’bout man fur! Eeewwwww! I’m talkin’ werewolves and other shapeshifters. What is it about these furry guys that turn us on?

I think it’s taking that bad boy persona and ramping it up ten fold. The heroine falls in love with a guy who, with his little finger, could snap the neck that’s just been bared for his pleasure (and hers, I might add). It doesn’t hurt that he has more sex appeal in that little finger than any other man she knows. In addition, she’s guaranteed a hero who will fight to the death for what’s his, a man who loves as fiercely as he hates in true alpha hero style. And in the heroine the paranormal hero finds his reason to keep on going, discovers renewed faith in love and learns that even in the dark world he inhabits there are reasons to laugh.

In my Moon series with Brava, I have two types of werewolves—those who go from man to wolf and those who stop somewhere in between; those who have been cursed, and those who have been bitten. The man who’s under a curse goes from man straight to wolf. Those who have been bitten and thereby turned by another werewolf can, with practice, partially transform or they can go straight to wolf as well. The hero in Daring the Moon (book one), suffers from a family curse first visited upon his great grandfather. Ryder Merrick can control his transformation to wolf except during the three days of the full moon. The heroes in books two and three (Declan O’Connell and Rory Sullivan, respectively), have both been bitten and so their werewolfism (yes, it’s a word! LOL) is a different type than Ryder’s.
