Update: My DH has done his algorhythmic thing and Anna Bowling is our winner. She’ll be receiving a copy of WAKING UP WITH A RAKE . If you didn’t win, please check out my blog tour itinerary for more chances!

2012 has been a very busy publishing year for me. The last two books of my Touch of Seduction series, TOUCH OF A ROGUE and TOUCH OF A SCOUNDREL were released in February and August, respectively. I love these Victorian era stories with characters who have the ‘gift of touch.’ (It’s the psychic ability to glean information from inanimate objects, and while it’s sometimes helpful, it always comes with a price.)

I’ve heard from so many readers who enjoyed the love stories of Viola and Quinn, Jacob and Julianne, and Devon and Emma. Thank you for taking my books into your heart.

These will be my last Brava titles for the forseeable future. However, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be writing for Kensington’s Zebra line in 2013! I’ll still be delivering my signature historical romance with a sparkle of magic, but now my books will be available in mass market and affordable ebook formats.

I’m starting a new series called Spirit of the Highlands and, you guessed it, a few of my characters are, shall we say … “corporeally challenged.” That’s right. My Scottish castles are home to more than one meddlesome ghost!

PLAID TO THE BONE will be available in September 2013. It’s the story of an arranged marriage that starts with the bride’s pledge to do away with her new husband. However, once Kait Grant meets Adam Cameron, she begins to have a bit of a re-think about her father’s plans for settling the disagreement between their clans. Nothing comes freely though and their HEA results in an unusual curse on all the folk of Bonniebroch Castle.

The curse has a 300 year deadline, and the last chance for it to be broken comes in PLAID TIDINGS (October 2013). Here’s the back cover copy for that story:

Christmas in the Highlands…

Not any dashing English lord’s idea of a good time. But now that Lord Alexander Mallory has won a Scottish estate in a hand of cards, he is the unlikely laird of the wild, snowy Bonniebroch. Worse yet, the ancient pile of stones comes with a betrothal. To a fiery red-headed virgin. And a curse.

Alex will have his hands full honoring the first, seducing the second and breaking the third … all by Twelfth Night.

The mistress of Scottish romance herself, the fabulous Hannah Howell, has given PLAID TIDINGS a delightful cover quote. I wish I could share the cover art with you, but they are still in the production phase. However, if you check back on my Coming Next page periodically, you’ll see them there first! You’ll also get your first peek at my books for Casablanca (WAKING UP WITH A RAKE is coming in January!) as well as my Rock*It Reads releases.

So now, this is my ‘swan song’ on the Brava blog. I bid my Brava sisters a fond adieu. I wish you all well and will surely see you swimming along in the publishing pond.

THE QUESTION

What’s your favorite Christmas story?

THE PRIZE

I have one ARC of WAKING UP WITH A RAKE. Some lucky commenter is going to score an early peek into the first book in the Royal Rakes series. Be sure to check back here on Dec. 11th. I’ll announce the winner then. Good luck!

Time to Vote

Update: My DH did the random drawing and PJPuppyMom is our winner. She’ll be receiving MY LADY BELOW STAIRS, my Christmas novella, in her choice of Kindle or Nook format. If you didn’t win, I hope you’ll pop over to my website and enter my ongoing contest. The Grand Prize there is my newest release: LORD OF DEVIL ISLE along with the entire Touch of Seduction series.

Finally, the end is near. We’ve all been deluged with contradictory commercials, push-polls and robo-calls. We watched the debates. We’ve tried to sort through conflicting reports on the news media about the candidates to find the truth of the matter. Tomorrow Americans will settle the question in, hopefully, the most civilized manner possible.

We’re going to vote.

Your vote counts. My DH and I come from a long line of voters. When he was a kid, the polling place for his precinct was in the basement of his parent’s farmhouse. Friends and neighbors from all over the county would come to this central location, cast their paper ballots and stay for a cup of my mother-in-law’s coffee. Yes, she served members of both parties.

My parents are volunteer poll workers in the small Missouri town where they live. Each election, they spend a day in training on the correct procedures to make sure the election is free and fair. Then on the day of the election, they rise at oh-dark:thirty and stay till the last ballot is tallied and secured.

Whoever you intend to vote for, I encourage you to do it. As ponderous as this process is, it’s still the best one we have. And it’s been bought and paid for in blood.

So thank a veteran and go to the polls.

I’d love to hear from you. Now I don’t want to know who you vote for unless you feel compelled to share, but I would love to know where you are and when you vote. Tell us if you have to wait in line. What’s the mood of the precinct? Did you vote absentee or cast an early ballot?  Will you wait up watching for results? Is there a referendum issue you’re concerned about?

Running Away with my DH

Update: Congrats to Janie McGaugh! Her name was picked in the random drawing and she’ll receive Mia’s TOUCH OF A LADY in her choice of Kindle or Nook formats!

This weekend, the DH and I are planning a getaway to a lake resort in northern Minnesota.  Since we honeymooned in the north woods, the crisp pine-scented air and the cries of loons say ‘young love’ to me. We’re looking forward to walking the lake shore, enjoying the fall colors and cuddling by the fire.

Minnesota Lake

Of course, we’re joining his siblings at this resort so part of the time will be spent with others. My sister-in-law has arranged for a spa day for the girls. I have no clue what the guys will be doing while we’re being pampered. I suspect football will feature prominently.

Spa Day

But the DH and I have our own plans to slip away from the group for some ‘alone time.’

In a way, this weekend reminds me of the Georgian house party that’s the setting for TOUCH OF A LADY. My hero Tristan has a devil of a time finding ways to be alone with Delphinia, the girl who’s captured his heart, but with a bit of skullduggery, he manages some inventive trysting places–like a fortune teller’s tent, a large wardrobe, and a grotto in the center of a maze. Love is where you find it!

If you’d like a little armchair getaway this weekend, I’m offering a chance to win a Kindle or Nook version of TOUCH OF A LADY. the prequel to my Touch of Seduction series, to a randomly selected commenter.

All you have to do is share your favorite getaway spot. It doesn’t even have to be someplace you’ve been. It can be a dream getaway, some place you’d like to go.

Looking forward to hearing from YOU!

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas…

Monday, September 3rd, 2012
Mia Marlowe Icon

I know, I know, this summer has been a scorcher. Yet, I’ve been making mental trips to a wintry fictional Scotland every day for the last few months. My current WIP is a Highland Christmas story, so whatever the weather outside my condo, I have to have holly in my heart!

Kissing Bough

Click to view all of Mia’s books!

Amazing as it may seem, celebrating Christmas has been frowned upon in the past. In 1647, Cromwell and the Puritans in Parliament succeeded in banning the “pagan” aspects of the holiday–feasting, caroling and decorating with evergreens. All were outlawed. Even Nativity scenes were eyed with suspicion. Could lead to joy, after all. Scotland followed England’s lead by tamping down on any and all raucous celebrating.

When the monarchy was reinstated in 1660, the ban on Christmas was lifted. But the practical Scots didn’t follow suit. December the 25th remained a normal working day until 1958!

Fortunately, my story features a magical Scottish castle where nothing has changed in 500 years and Christmastide is their favorite time of year! Of course, there were no Christmas trees in Bonniebroch Castle. That was a Victorian addition to the holiday. But the kissing bough was a favorite decoration. It was fashioned of several types of plants. Evergreens symbolized eternity. Prickly holly represented men. Ivy stood for women. The kissing bough was liberally laced with mistletoe and its white berries. When a young lady stood beneath the bough, a fellow could steal a kiss. Of course, he first had to pluck off one of the mistletoe berries. By the time Twelfth Night rolled around (January 6th) a would-be suitor was hard pressed to find a berry that entitled him to a kiss.

Here’s the blurb for my Scottish Christmas story:

As part of the advance guard for the plaid pageantry of King George IV’s visit to Scotland in 1822, half-English Alexander Gregor Mallory acquires a Scottish estate and title as a cover for his clandestine activities. He’s always shunned his Highland roots, but he’s forced to embrace them now to discover whether any more Radicals lurk who might threaten the king. He’s a considered no end of a catch in the marriage market, but he takes risks in service to the Crown that a family man would avoid. The last thing Alex counted on was his new Scottish estate coming with a built-in betrothal.

Lucinda MacOwen has never been kissed. Mostly because the local lads aren’t brave enough to chase a girl who has a ghost for a chaperone. Lucinda has to find a way to make her “made marriage” work, for the sake of her father who wants the bride price, her sisters who want a leg up in Society and her Radical brother who wants to escape the noose!

In addition to protecting his king, Alex must settle the small matter of breaking the curse that traps all the folk of Bonniebroch Castle before their time runs out on Twelfth Night. He longs to escape from this tangle, but when passion’s fire burns and silk whispers on smooth, bare skin, will Lucinda turn out to be just what the Highlander wants?

As I finish up this Christmas story, I’m also working on some ideas for the title. In case you’re wondering, authors may suggest a title, but we don’t have the final say. So far I’ve come up with PLAID TIDINGS and WHAT A HIGHLANDER WANTS. Help me do some brainstorming. Leave your suggestion and I’ll send a random commenter a copy of my enovella Touch of a Lady, the prequel to my Touch of Seduction series. Of course, if we use your suggestion, I’ll give you a “thank you” in the acknowledgements and send you a signed copy when the book comes out in October 2013.

I look forward to hearing YOUR suggestion! Or if you don’t have a title in mind, how about sharing your family’s favorite Christmas recipe or tradition? I’m looking forward to trying to make a Scottish potato dish I discovered in my research called “rumbledethumps!”

Update: Everyone who commented was a winner! You should receive an email from me shortly to learn whether you prefer Kindle or Nook for your TOUCH OF A LADY!

I saw an article recently about “Title Poetry.” The author went to her bookshelves and pulled out a few titles to combine to create a verse of sorts. It’s not exactly a haiku, not a limerick or a sonnet. Heck, it’s not really poetry at all, but it’s fun to see if you can tie romance titles together to suggest a poem. Here’s what a I did with a few Brava titles:

The Touch of a Scoundrel Tempted a Mistress by Mistake,
Invitation to Scandal meant Unexpected Pleasures.

The books I used are:
TOUCH OF A SCOUNDREL by moi,
TEMPTED by Rebecca Zanetti
MISTRESS BY MISTAKE by Maggie Robinson
INVITATION TO SCANDAL by Bronwen Evans
UNEXPECTED PLEASURES by Mary Wine

I cheated just a bit by adding a couple small words, but you get the idea. Wanna play? Go to you bookshelf and see if you can put together a few titles to create a little romance poem. Because this requires some time and effort on your part, I’ll give a copy of my enovella TOUCH OF A LADY to the first 10 who share their ‘title poem’ with us. Be sure to give us the authors of the books as well.

And don’t forget! TOUCH OF A SCOUNDREL is in bookstores now!

Marlowe wraps up her paranormal Victorian series with a lighthearted romance between a con artist and a psychic. Griffin Nash, Lord Devonwood, manifests the Preston family gift by seeing 12 hours into the future after handling objects others have touched. Devon’s younger brother, Teddy, arrives home with untitled American Emmaline Farnsworth, whom he hopes to marry, and her ailing Egyptologist father. Emma and her companion are actually scheming to get Teddy’s family to fund a fake archeological expedition. When Devon’s chance brush with Emma’s sketching pencil yields an image of them kissing, he lets attraction and the inevitability of his visions trump his concern for his brother’s feelings. Devon’s “Sendings” make delightful teasers for later passionate scenes, and the inner conflicts among Emma’s secret agenda, her natural kindness, and her new feelings of desire provide very effective tension. Tight, sharp banter and a well-structured secondary plot make the story bigger than the average socialite comedy of manners. ~ Publishers Weekly

The Gift of Touch–Where did it begin?

Monday, July 2nd, 2012
Mia Marlowe Icon

In my Touch of Seduction series, my heroes or heroines have the “gift of touch,” which means they can receive information in the form of visions when they touch certain inanimate objects. This special ability is a double-edged sword, because it comes with blinding headaches, but the Preston cousins learn to live with it and use the gift to their advantage.

My series has received starred reviews for both Touch of a Thief and Touch of a Rogue from Publishers Weekly and Touch of a Rogue was named one of  PW’s Top Romances for Spring. Now before Touch of a Scoundrel comes out, I’m delighted to bring you Touch of a Lady, the story of how the gift of touch found its way into the Preston family tree.

He lived for his duty…

Tristan’s grandfather lost the family fortune and the Devonwood earldom still hasn’t recovered under his father’s tenure. In order to save the estate from disaster, Tristan is determined to wed the daughter of a duke. Lady Florence’s dowry is reputedly hefty enough to sink a frigate, so Tristan will shoulder the family’s burden, even if it means a loveless match.

Till she taught him to live for desire

When he first lays eyes on Delphinia Preston, he knows she’s trouble in a gorgeous blue dress. Despite the rumors about her being a half-gypsy witch, there’s something about the grey-eyed beauty that calls to Tristan. And he can’t keep himself from answering, even if it means wrecking all his carefully laid plans…

The Joys of Being an Anglophile

Update: My DH has done his mathematical magic and come up with our 3 winners. Congrats to: Diane P. Diamond, Marion Spicher, and Su Maneck. If you didn’t win, I hope you’ll check my Events page for the next time I’ll be blogging with a giveaway!

I admit it. I’m a rabid royal watcher. It might be because my ancestors on both sides were English. (Of course, since my family came here in the 1600′s that sort of indicates they were in a bit of trouble in the Old Country, doesn’t it?) But I’m still proud of the British blood in my veins and this week’s Diamond Jubilee for Queen Elizabeth II is just as exciting for me as anyone who lives across the Pond.

60 years on the throne is a monumental achievement. Only one British monarch has bested the current queen and that’s Queen Victoria, who reigned for 63 years. Like the current occupant of Buckingham Palace, Victoria came into her crown early in life. She was only 18 when she succeeded her uncle, but despite her youth,  she became one of the most admired monarchs of all time.

My Mom at Queen Emma's piano

My Mom at Queen Emma's piano

When I was in Hawaii recently, I learned that even the Hawaiian royal family wasn’t immune to anglophilia. Queen Emma (the consort to King Kamehameha IV) adopted European dress and even named her son Albert, after Victoria’s husband. The Hawaiian royals were obviously great friends of Victoria and Albert.  Of course the fact that England supported the Kingdom of Hawaii against growing American encroachment might also have had something to do with it.

When the royal couple wanted a summer palace to escape the heat of Honolulu, they ordered a charming English cottage to be dismantled in England and had it shipped all the way around the world to be reassembled in the cool hills overlooking Waikiki. We actually were able to tour Queen Emma’s summer palace along with Kim from the SOS Aloha blog.  You’d never have known you weren’t in Wiltshire, unless you looked outside and saw the palm trees!

The summer palace is furnished with Victorian antiques and of course, we were discouraged from touching anything. But in Queen Emma’s will, she requested that anyone who could play the piano should be allowed to sit down to her magnificent instrument. It was a little out of tune, but still had a lovely tone.

So you can find anglophiles and admirers of all things Victorian in the most unlikely of places. Which may be part of why I set my Touch of Seduction series in Victoria’s England. The third book TOUCH OF A SCOUNDREL is coming out on July 31st. It’s the story of Griffin Nash, the Earl of Devonwood. He’s fiercely protective of his family and will do anything to provide for them. He’s also blessed (he’d say ‘cursed’) with the ‘gift of touch’–an inherited ability that allows him to peer into the future when he touches certain objects. When he finds a lovely young woman sketching in his garden and stoops to retrieve her pencil, he’s treated to a vision of her in his arms. For once, he’s looking forward to the future hurtling toward him. Until he discovers she’s his brother’s fiancee…

I have some ARCs of TOUCH OF A SCOUNDREL and would like to give 3 of them away. Leave a comment or question for me and you’ll be entered in the random drawing. Good luck!

So, to get the conversation going…didn’t you just love Kate’s red hat at the Jubilee festivities yesterday? Or are you not a royal watcher? Either way is cool with me. Just explain yourself. ;-)

______________________________________

It’s almost here…those lazy days that stretch into next week. Since I used to teach, summer meant a real break for me and the kids. Now I still keep up the daily 9-5 writing schedule, but I’m always looking for ways to take mini-vaca’s that give me the same sense of freedom the last day of school always imparted.

Sometimes it’s as simple as walking the dogs down by the river. Or stepping out onto the veranda with a cup of coffee, settling into one of the chairs and putting my heels up on the railing. If it’s Saturday, my DH and I might slip off to Revere Beach early with our beach chairs and books and listen to the gentle surf wash up on the sand till the crowds arrive and it’s too noisy to pretend we’re there by ourselves.

Touch of a Scoundrel

Click to pre-order!

But that brings me to one of the best ways to slip into summer mode–between the pages of a new book! Nothing takes me away like a hot hero and a heroine he can’t have for one reason or another. So I’m always looking for the newest titles coming out each summer.

I’m thrilled to share that I have a new story coming out July 31st called TOUCH OF A SCOUNDREL. It’s the last in my Touch of Seduction series, but you don’t have to have read the previous books to enjoy this one. It’s the story of Griffin Nash, Lord Devonwood who suffers from the “gift of touch”–the ability to glimpse the future when he touches an inanimate object. Griffin never knows when a tea cup, or a letter opener, or a bit of lace over satiny skin is going to send messages of what’s to come screaming into his brain.

He hates his gift. That’s because no matter how hard he tries, he’s never been able to alter the future he’s seen. When a sketching pencil shows him the lovely young woman in his garden is going to be in his arms within the next twelve hours, he has no wish to change things. Until he learns she’s his brother’s fiancee…

I just scored some ARCs of TOUCH OF A SCOUNDREL and want to give you a chance to win one. Just share a small way you “get away from it all” and you’ll be entered to win one of the 3 I’ll be giving away today.

Touch of a Thief Special

Monday, May 7th, 2012
Mia Marlowe Icon

Last May Touch of a Thief came out. Right now it’s on sale as part of the Kindle Top 100 program for a budget-pleasing $3.99. It’s the first book in the Touch of Seduction series. In each of the books, at least one of the characters has the “gift of touch”–the psychic ability to glean information from objects. For example, when my heroine Viola touches gemstones, she hears their voices and receives visions of the people whose lives have been recorded by the gems.

Here’s a little snippet from Touch of a Thief . My heroine Viola has been caught red-handed breaking into Greydon Quinn’s bedchamber where his safe is located. Since he needs the services of a thief, he wants to be sure her skills are as advertised.

After spreading the kerchief on the bed, he dumped the contents of the stocking onto it. A glowing rainbow of stones glittered up at Viola.

“You keep your jewels in an old stocking?”

He shrugged. “It seemed more secure than the wall safe with the likes of you prowling about London.”

She frowned down at the gemstones. It was an impressive pile of riches, but the resonance was off. “Some of these aren’t genuine.”

He cocked a brow at her and nodded. “Show me.”

She drew a deep breath and stretched out her hand. She’d do the pearls first. Their sibilant, watery voices were always easiest to bear. She picked up a gray pearl, a smoky iridescent orb. The low hum began inside her head.

Like a waving bed of kelp, the pearl spoke to her in wobbling, gentle tones. The words were garbled, and in no language she knew, but a quick vision of a wizened old gent with a purple turban and scarlet-dyed beard flashed across her mind. She dropped the pearl before the precious thing could show her any more.

It was unusual for her to receive a vision from a pearl. Perhaps it was because they were never as old as other gems. Perhaps the fragile substance resisted picking up imprints from its owners. Or perhaps pearls realized they too were mortal and didn’t want to carry someone else’s burden for the course of their stay on earth.

Whatever secret this gray pearl bore, Viola didn’t want to know it.

“That pearl is real,” she said. “And very old. You’ll not find its mate. It will have to be used as a pendant.”

“How do you know that?”

“I just know.” How could she explain something she didn’t understand herself? She only knew she was different.

And people mistrust those who are different.

She turned back to the rest of the jewels. One by one, she sorted out sweet-voiced carnelians and sultry-toned lapis lazuli, shoving their silent imitations to one side. Then she moved on to the harder gems.

The ones with more strident voices. The ones most likely to invade her mind with nightmarish images of their past. She gleaned out the rasping emeralds, the muttering sapphires and wailing rubies, sorting the paste gems off in a small pile by themselves. Some of the fakes were quite good and probably would have fooled most jewelers, but if a stone didn’t speak to her, she knew it wasn’t real.

Finally, she was left with only five diamonds. She drew a deep breath to steel herself against them. Of all jewels, diamonds screamed out the atrocities in their pasts most painfully. Perhaps being uncut would help. They couldn’t have had contact with too many people.

“Why are you stopping?” Quinn asked. “Can’t you tell with diamonds?”

She picked up the largest and breathed a sigh of relief. “Fake.”

“You’re sure?”

She dropped it on the floor and ground it under her boot heel. The stone splintered into shards.

Viola reached for the next stone. The moment her fingertips brushed it, the diamond screeched at her, a high-pitched squeal on the edge of sound. She bit her lip and pulled back her hand before it could send her an image.

“Real.”

Quinn moved the gem to the ‘keepers’ pile and it whined softly when he touched it.

How does he not hear that? It was unusual for a stone to speak without her touch merely because she was near. The gem must have a particularly vicious story to tell. This one she would avoid at all costs.

The rest of the diamonds were genuine. Viola managed to handle them quickly enough that only one was able to send her a red-splashed image of the moment the dark-skinned man who first dug it out of the ground was hacked to death for it. She swallowed hard and tried to expunge the horrific scene from her mind.

“So the rumors are true. You cannot be fooled by a fake, no matter how cunningly realistic.” Quinn scooped up the genuine stones and replaced them in his stocking.

She stood. Barring that last diamond, she’d escaped rather easily. She doubted any of the visions lasted long enough to leave her with the grinding headache that usually accompanied the use of the gift. “I’m glad to have been of service. Now, if you’ll excuse me—”

“Not so fast. I haven’t explained the purpose of our partnership.”

“But I’ve already culled your stones.”

“That was only a test. I had to be sure you were the real Mayfair Jewel Thief. Sit,” he said curtly.

His tone was so commanding, she obeyed reflexively. Then she stood back up. She wasn’t one of his sepoys to be ordered about.

“Very well, I’ll sit.” He claimed the end of the bed again and grinned up at her.

Irritation fizzed up her spine, but she was the one who’d chosen to stand.

“Here are my terms and they are non-negotiable,” Quinn said. “You will render me a burglary service, and at the end of our association, you will receive half the gems you just saw.”

“My choice from among them?” Something inside her quivered with hope. It would mean her family’s money troubles were over. She’d never have to steal again.

Quinn nodded.

“Very well. I accept your terms. What do you want from me?”

“What do you know about red diamonds?” he asked.

“Red diamonds? They’re extremely rare.” In all her thievery, she’d never run across one. “And because of that, they’re worth the earth. But they aren’t for everyone. It’s said they often carry curses.”

“Are you the superstitious sort?”

“No.” It wasn’t superstition to believe something true. She’d be able to hear the curse first hand. “But as far as I know there are no red diamonds in all England. And even if there was, I wouldn’t steal it.”

“Why?”

“Because it would be impossible to fence. And an absolute sin to re-cut into smaller stones. Red diamonds are never overly large to begin with, no more than five or six carats. What would I do with one?”

“Let me worry about that part.” Quinn rose to his feet. “I need to see you home, Lady Viola. You have a busy day ahead of you tomorrow.”

She was gratified to hear him use her title, but the rest of his words made her slant him a suspicious look. “What am I going to be doing?”

“You’ll be leaving for Paris with me,” he said. “There is a diamond called Baaghh kaa kkhuun en route to the Queen’s royal collection. And I mean to meet the courier in France.”

“Baaghh kaa kkhuun?”

“It means ‘Blood of the Tiger,’” Quinn said. “And you, my Lady Light-fingers, are going to help me steal it.”

Up All Night

Only another romance reader can fully appreciate this note I received from a Facebook friend recently:

“Read three of your books in three days. I am happy, my husband is NOT. Finished at 2 am this morning. House is a mess, tons of ironing, cleaning, shopping needs to be done but I’m not complaining! Lovely!!”

Now my goal is certainly not to cause marital strife, but this made me smile so much my cheeks hurt. How many times have I heard that sleepy masculine demand when I’m deep into a book, “When are you going to turn the light off?” (Incidentally, the fact that the Kindle app on my phone is backlit and I can read in the dark is a HUGE help to marital harmony!)

But the fact remains that sometimes you just can’t put the book down. I love it when a story grabs hold of me and won’t let go. Other authors have kept me up tons of times. It feels delicious to be the one causing insomnia!

The last book that made me read till my eyes felt like sandpaper was Deanna Raybourn’s THE DARK ENQUIRY. What’s kept you up past your bedtime?

“Balancing sleuthing and romance with a touch of the mystical, Marlowe’s smart and amusing return to the Preston family (introduced in Touch of a Thief) features charming investigator Jacob Preston, who broadcasts his fondness for married women but keeps his clairvoyance a secret. Young countess Julianne Tyndale asks Jacob to prove her late husband’s death was not a suicide and help her find the sixth ancient Druid dagger in the set he was collecting. As the investigation proceeds, Jacob and Julianne play a delightful cat-and-mouse game of attraction, alternating between taking the lead and dodging commitment. Julianne, a budding feminist trained on the writings of Mary Wollstonecraft, pushes Jacob’s boundaries (and high society’s) with her demands to be fully involved in the search, and is full of sparklingly righteous outrage when she encounters obnoxious men. Fans of historical paranormals will delight in this fetching 19th-century romp. Starred Review!
