I’ve got hot-off-the-presses, fancy-schmancy ARCs (advance reading copies) of my September 27, 2011 Brava release, MUST LOVE VAMPIRES, & I’m giving them away!

Okay, so I’m being a little stingy with them. I only have a handful of the fancy-schmancy things, after all.  But I DO want to give them away to fabulous paranormal romance reviewers who are willing to read my little vampires-in-Vegas story & help me get the word out about it all over the interwebs.

I mean, come on…don’t you want to tout this gorgeous book to all of your vampire-loving friends?  (And maybe even a few who don’t know they like vampires yet? )

LOVE AT FIRST BITE

Nightclub dancer Chloe Lamoureaux just met the man of her dreams: Aidan Raines is charming, considerate, rich, and hot. Of course, he’s a little mysterious about his age. And his favorite drink. And he’s not much for sunlight. But he’s asked her to marry him, and she’s ready to do it. Sure, she has a few secrets too—but they’ll have plenty of time to work things out while they’re living happily ever after. Right?

Her identical twin sister, Chuck, isn’t so sure. Maybe reporting for the local Bigfoot-sighting tabloid doesn’t make her an expert, but to Chuck, Aidan and his brother Sebastian look like honest-to-Dracula vampires. Especially Sebastian: beguiling, seductive, and just a hint of dangerous. Maybe she wouldn’t mind him taking a little taste. But with Chloe’s life in the balance, she has to know—do they want hot love or hot blood? Or maybe…a little of both?

So if you’re a reviewer for a site with really good romance-reader traffic—or even just know of one where you think MUST LOVE VAMPIRES should be reviewed—please contact me with all of the pertinent snail / e-mail / URL information.

And to sweeten the pot, let me add that there might just be chocolate in it for you…  (Oh, yes, I’ve got chocolate…if I can keep it from melting in this ungodly heat, that is. )

PLUS, I’m going to autograph one of my fancy-schmancy ARCs of MUST LOVE VAMPIRES & award it to one lucky winner here at the Brava Authors blog today. You don’t even have to be a reviewer…though if you are, that’s okay; we won’t hold it against you. ;-)

To enter, simply leave a comment to today’s post—with or without review site information—telling me what you love most about reading vampire romance.  (U.S. residents only, please.)

Thanks & good luck!

An “I’m Not at RWA” Giveaway

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011
Heidi Betts Icon

Those of you who are frequent visitors of my WIPs and Chains blog already know that I am not attending the Romance Writers of America conference in New York this year.

But I’m making the best of it!  Keeping my nose to the grindstone, making margaritas in my mouth as needed, & holding a fun book giveaway here at Brava Authors.

You see, if I were at the RWA conference right now, I would probably be signing copies of THE BITE BEFORE CHRISTMAS at the giant Literacy Autographing they host to kick off the week.

Yes, it’s a Christmas book, but it’s also my most recent Kensington Brava title (in relation to the conference date), so just consider it a bit of Christmas in June. ;-)

Since I’m not at the conference or the literacy autographing, though, & you’re not at the conference of literacy autographing…  Well, I assume you aren’t.  But even if you are, I’m still not there to sign books for anybody… I’m going to give away a copy right here!

In case you need a refresher about what the story is about, here’s the blurb:

Vampires turn to fanged and fabulous matchmaker extraordinaire Angelina Ricci to help them find that special someone to curl up with under the mistletoe in this charming (read: sexy) and delightful (read: funny) holiday collection by national bestselling author Heidi Betts. Because vampires need love, too. (Biting optional. Hot sex guaranteed.)

“All I Vant For Christmas”

Millionaire vampire Connor Drake loves trimming the tree, baking gingerbread cookies, and hanging the mistletoe for Christmas, but his Goth and gloomy vampire siblings won’t have anything to do with it. Enter Angelina, who sends party planner Jillian Parker to the rescue. But when Jillian—who’s mortal—discovers that she’s decking the halls for a family of vampires, will she run…or will Connor have a beautiful woman to share the holidays with?

“A Vampire in Her Stocking”

When Vivian learns that her secret crush, Sean, is terminally ill, she is heartbroken. Confiding in her matchmaking friend, Angelina recommends the obvious—give Sean eternal life by turning him into a vampire, too. But when Vivian refuses, Angelina decides to play Santa (with a side of Cupid) and changes Sean for her, leaving him wrapped in a bright red bow on Vivian’s doorstep…

“It’s A Wonderful Bite”

Although Angelina is happy with her longtime lover, Ian, she’s ready for a commitment. After drinking eggnog and watching It’s a Wonderful Life on Christmas Eve for the (literally) four millionth time, Angelina falls into a dream where she is mortal, and Ian is involved with someone else. Talk about the nightmare before Christmas! But Santa must have checked his list twice, because this Christmas, Angelina’s wishes are about to come true…

To enter the drawing for an autographed copy of THE BITE BEFORE CHRISTMAS—plus goodies; I always stuff my prize envelopes with lots of other fun goodies  —simply leave a comment to today’s post telling me what you’re doing this week while everyone else is off at the RWA conference having fun without us…or off on vacation doing the same.   (U.S. residents only, please.)

Good luck & happy reading!

One of the most exciting moments in any author’s life is when she gets her first glimpse of new artwork.  It’s the first time we get to see what our publishers’ art departments have been working on so stealthily behind the scenes.  The first time we get to see what our baby…I mean, book will look like when it comes into the world & starts showing up on store shelves.

Trust me, it is a total blast.

And of course, once we get new artwork, we cannot wait to show it off.  To everyone.  We post it online, show up on our friends’ doorsteps unannounced, & carry a grainy print-out in our purses like pictures of grandchildren to whip out & force on complete strangers.  Oh, yes, we do.

Today is my day to do just that.  I am absolutely thrilled to finally be able to share the gorgeous new cover of my September 27, 2011 Kensington Brava title, MUST LOVE VAMPIRES:

Isn’t it just about the sexiest thing you’ve ever seen?  (Don’t try to deny it—you know it’s true. ;-) )

I’ve got a back cover blurb to share with you, too:

LOVE AT FIRST BITE

Can you say awe-some? I’m starting to get really excited about this one…& hope you are, too.

Actually, now that the cover has been revealed, MUST LOVE VAMPIRES is officially available for pre-order!  So if you want your copy as soon as humanly—or inhumanly *snicker*—possible, be sure to order today:

interview with a vampire

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011
Heidi Betts Icon

Last month, I posted “A Fun Little Guessing Game” about the Top Secret Project I’d been working on connected to the release of my second sexy, funny vampire romance from Brava Books, MUST LOVE VAMPIRES.  I’m not quite ready to reveal the details of that project yet (although I did award a prize over at my personal blog, WIPs and Chains, to the reader with the best guess of what that project might be) but will hopefully be able to do that soon.  And hopefully you’ll love it as much as I do!

PhotobucketIn the meantime, I’m up to no good—again! with another semi-Top Secret Project related to MUST LOVE VAMPIRES.  (I swear, I feel like a spy, working stealthily behind the scenes to bring you extra little bits of hot & sexy vampire goodness. )

This time, though, I could really use your help.

What questions would you ask if you had the chance to sit down with an honest-to-Dracula vampire & quiz him about his existence?

Would you want to know how he’d been turned…& how he turns others?

What it feels like to be immortal?  Or to drink blood to survive?

How he’s managed to blend in with mortal society for so long without his deep, dark secrets being discovered?

The sky’s the limit, so let me know what YOU most want to know about the secret lives of vampires.  Post as many questions as you can think of that you might pose if you were interviewing a vampire.  If I get enough good ones, I might just end up using them as part of my second Top Secret MUST LOVE VAMPIRES Project, & all those burning questions we’ve been dying (ha!) to ask our sexy, undead counterparts may finally be answered.

a fun little guessing game (prize included!)

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011
Heidi Betts Icon

Over on my personal blog, WIPs and Chains, I’ve been talking a lot about a Top Secret Project I’ve been working on recently.

Well, it’s finally finished! (Mostly. ) And while I still need to discuss it with my Brava editor to get his stamp of approval before I can “make it so,” I thought it would be fun to see if you guys can guess what it is, exactly, I’ve been working on in such secrecy.

This might be kind of difficult, though, so I’ll offer a few hints:

Hint #1 — It has to do with my second Kensington Brava release, MUST LOVE VAMPIRES, coming out October 2011.

Hint #2 — I didn’t start it (or even think of it, really) until after MUST LOVE VAMPIRES was finished & turned in.

Hint #3 — The Top Secret, MUST LOVE VAMPIRES-related project is for you! (i.e. readers  )

If you’re willing to take a stab at my little guessing game, I’ll draw from everyone who guesses right—or at least gets really, really close—on what the Top Secret Project might be, & that person will win a set of chocolate playing cards to go with my upcoming Vegas-based vampire romance!  (Yes, that would be MUST LOVE VAMPIRES.  )

U.S. residents only, please. Winner will be announced here on the Brava Authors blog tomorrow, in the comment section of this post, so be sure to check back & see if you won!

Until then—let the guessing begin!

stamps to the rescue

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011
Heidi Betts Icon

It’s no secret that I am a HUGE animal lover & proponent of animal adoption/rescue.

So last week at my personal blog, WIPs and Chains, instead of giving away an actual book on “Free Book Friday,” I offered 10 sheets of Animal Rescue “Adopt a Shelter Pet” stamps to ten lucky bloggers.

These stamps have been available through the USPS since April 2010—& still are!  The next time you need stamps, be sure to request them, since not only can you spread the word about animal rescue/adoption by using them on all of your correspondence, but a portion of the proceeds from the purchase of these stamps goes to animal rescue organizations.  It doesn’t get any better than that!

To make a long story short, I wanted to hold a giveaway like this last Spring to spread the word & celebrate their release.  However, I was having some major issues with my website & blog back in April, so the moment slipped by & I never got the chance.

But I’m rectifying that now!  And the giveaway at WIPs and Chains went over so well, with so many animal lovers coming out of the cyber-woodwork, that I thought it might be fun to see how many animal lovers we have over here at the Brava Authors blog.

Once again, I am offering 10 sheets of Animal Rescue “Adopt a Shelter Pet” stamps to 10 different winners.

To enter, simply leave a comment to today’s post.  U.S. residents only for the prize, please, but everyone is welcome to chat.

PhotobucketPhotobucketAnd to make things even more fun, feel free to leave a cute note or anecdote about your own (hopefully adopted/rescued) furbabies!

I’ll draw the ten winners’ names at the end of the day (my time, EST, before I go to bed ) & post them in the comment section, so be sure to check back to see if you won.  Winners will also be responsible for contacting me with their mailing information in order to receive their prize!

Good luck!  And remember—adopt a shelter pet!

all I want for Christmas is a vampire

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010
Heidi Betts Icon

“Vampires probably aren’t that big on Christmas, now that I think about it.”

“Not as a rule.”

~Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Even though Christmas is now officially over, I’m still in a very festive mood.  How about you?

I’m also in a very vampire-y mood, because…well, let’s face it, when you like vampires, you’re pretty much always in a vampire-y mood.  (The fact that I’m currently working on my second vampire romance for Brava and Chiller channel is re-running Buffy the Vampire Slayer from the very beginning isn’t helping, either. :???: )

I know, I know.  Vampires and Christmas.  They go together like…well, vampires and Christmas.   But as most of you are probably aware, I did in fact tackle this odd combination for my very first Brava release.  And when it came to writing THE BITE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, I definitely didn’t make things easy on myself. Do vampires even celebrate Christmas? you’ve got to be wondering.

Well, the idea actually came about after a chat with the late Kate Duffy, who used to be in charge of the Brava line for Kensington Publishing. It got me thinking, “What if vampires do celebrate Christmas? They’ve been around for a lot of years, right? So what if they’re even more sentimental about holiday traditions than the rest of us?” They certainly have a lot more memories and customs to build on!

That’s pretty much how the first novella in THE BITE BEFORE CHRISTMAS came about. In “All I Vant for Christmas,” all Connor Drake wants is a nice, homey, traditional holiday. Unfortunately, his rebellious siblings are having none of it. Enter Jillian Park, an event coordinator sent by Connor’s matchmaking friend, Angelina, to help him celebrate the holidays right—with or without the cooperation of his brother and sister.

For the second story in the collection, I have to admit I just really liked the title “A Vampire in her Stocking.” *snicker* But then I had to come up with a way to get one there. So I created Vivian Harrison, a female vamp who’s been in love with her mortal boss for as long as she can remember. But Photobucketpoor Sean turns out to be sick. Very, very sick. Once again riding to the matchmaking rescue, Angelina Ricci decides to do what a vampire has to do—she turns Sean and leaves him as an early Christmas gift for Vivian…complete with bright red bow.

Last but not least, how could I not put a spin on the much-beloved It’s a Wonderful Life concept of “What if I’d never been born?” Of course, in this case, it had to be “What if I’d never become a vampire?” In “It’s a Wonderful Bite,” Angelina gets her own shot at happily forever after—and I do mean forever—but not before going through the hell of seeing what life would be like if she and her long-time love, Ian, had never been turned in the first place. Let’s just say she gains a new-found respect for her fangs and immortality. ;-)

So that’s the run-down on my fun & sexy holiday vampire collection. I’d love to answer any questions you might have about THE BITE BEFORE CHRISTMAS and chat with those of you who have hopefully already read it! (Hmm, that doesn’t sound quite right. I’ll chat with and answer questions from everybody, of course, whether you’ve read the book yet or not. I’m just hoping a lot of you have read it already. )

I’d also like to invite everyone to enter the “Bloody Good Holiday Giveaway” going on now at HeidiBetts.com, since there are only a few days left before I pick a winner!

It’s chock-full of fabulous Christmas and vampire goodies (list & rules available on the Newsletter page of my site) and the only thing you have to do to enter is sign up for my Newsletter. (And stay subscribed, of course.  But I’m not a pest, I swear! ;-) )

And finally, since I won’t be back at the Brava Authors blog until the end of January, I’d like to wish you all a very safe, happy, healthy, blessed, and prosperous New Year!

the truth about Thanksgiving

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010
Heidi Betts Icon

Happy Thanksgiving Pictures, Images and PhotosThanksgiving is only two days away, so Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

This is the time of year when we stop to really think about all we have to be thankful for. (I hope you do this a lot more often than just once a year, of course, & that you have lots & lots to be thankful for every single day.)

And even though my first thought when it came time to write this post was to create a gratitude list, that’s just too obvious for my tastes, & there are probably a million of that very thing popping up on blogs this week.

So I’m going to chat about something a little different—the truth about Thanksgiving, from an author’s perspective.

We think of holidays as those wonderful snippets of time when everybody gets the day off work, families & friends gather, & we basically stuff ourselves with yummy food, then veg out in front of a movie or football game, or maybe even gather around a fun board game.

Ah, I’m having a Norman Rockwell moment just thinking about it.

But as often as we might write about such wonderful, traditional scenes in our books, the truth is that a lot of writers’ holidays don’t play out that way.

I, for one, will not be watching a movie or sporting event, or even doing the big family gathering thing. And though I’ll certainly enjoy a nice, hearty meal of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes…probably some carrots or green beans…that will be simply a short break from how I’ll really be spending my holiday:

Writing.

You see, authors’ lives are filled with so much more than simply writing their books. There are phone calls & e-mails & blogs & promotion, & we are constantly getting distracted & interrupted. Probably no more than anyone at any other job, but writing is different. Writing is a very isolated business.  We need quiet & privacy & long stretches of time when our minds can be allowed to wander down the garden path & focus on the details of our plotlines & cast of characters.  A simple phone call or shouted, “Hey, Mom, where are my sneakers?” can throw us completely off track. Taking five minutes to check e-mail & finding a message from an editor asking us to drop everything & fill out an art fact sheet or do revisions on our last book can stop us in our tracks for days.

For us, weekends & holidays are gifts from the gods, & something to truly be thankful for. They are the days we know no one is going to call or e-mail…there’s no mail or UPS/FedEx delivery…there will be no requests for unplanned tasks or unexpected knocks at the door. The world will be quiet; we will be left (mostly) alone; & we can maybe, hopefully, get caught up with what we’re supposed to be more productive at every other day of the year—our writing.

So that’s the truth of how I’ll be spending my Thanksgiving. I may sit in front of the television, but it will be with my AlphaSmart on my lap as I tic-tic-tap away at my next Brava release, MUST LOVE VAMPIRES. And I will be thinking about all the things I’m thankful for at this time of year, but one of them won’t be for the day off, it will be for the quiet, uninterrupted day when I can try to catch up.

How about you? How will you be spending your wonderful Thanksgiving Day? (And it’s okay if you say you’re going to stuff yourself, then collapse in front of the TV until the tryptophan kicks in. ;-) )
