Happy Groundhog Day! It’s February 2nd and by now we all know how long winter is supposed to last thanks to Punxsutawny Phil’s prediction. But did you know that wolves have also been associated with the ability to predict the future?
Among the Cheyenne, there were men who were said to understand the language of wolves. Stories tell of wolves predicting enemy attacks and warning the Cheyenne people. The gift of prophecy could be bestowed by wolves on worthy individuals.
The ancient Romans believed that wolves were sacred to Mars, god of war. They were rarely sacrificed but each sacrifice was followed by reading the entrails, both to divine if the god had accepted the sacrifice and to discern the future. The Greeks did the same, offering wolves to Apollo, the sun god. To both Romans and Greeks, seeing a wolf was a sign of good fortune. Eventually, whatever the wolf was doing became important as well. For instance, a wolf running to the right with food in its mouth signified great joy.
Wolves were considered strong omens in battle, and before the battle of Sentinum (295 BC), a deer pursued by a wolf ran between the two battle lines. The deer ran toward the Gauls, who killed it. The wolf ran toward the Romans and they parted ranks to permit the wolf safe passage. The Romans believed that the appearance of the wolf signified they would be victorious and, in spite of several setbacks, the Romans won the day.
Wolves were once deities in Japan, and were said to have served as divine messengers. Their task was to bring words from the gods to the Shinto temples.
The Koyukon are a group of Athabaskan people living in northern Alaska. Their stories portray wolves as harbingers of doom – if a wolf howled in a strange manner, someone in the village was likely to die. Other native tribes, such as the Blackfeet and the Skagit, considered the presence of wolves to bring good luck, especially when hunting.
In modern times, wolves continue to be associated with foretelling the future, at least in an immediate physical sense. In 1920, an 8.5 earthquake hit China’s Ninghxia Province. According to reports of eyewitnesses, prior to this earthquake, wolves were seen running wildly around in packs. China is currently researching animal sensitivity to seismic events. The possibility also exists that wolves can predict lightning strikes. This was demonstrated in a 2007 YouTube video when an entire group of captive wolves suddenly stood up and began howling. Within a few seconds, lightning struck about 250 feet away.
And last but not least, the scientific world announced in 2011 that wolves are helping predict climate effects on evolution. A 15-year study of 150 wolves in Yellowstone helped scientists at Imperial College develop a computer model that will predict future changes to wolves and other animals – and eventually even humans.
In my own stories about Changelings – beings who can assume the form of a wolf at will – there are several characters with the ability to sense the future. For instance, Connor Macleod experiences far sight. Zoey Tyler inherited psychic ability from her human family. Pack leader Jessie Watson has made accurate predictions too, usually about the Changelings in her charge — such as James Macleod.

My family has always had the gift of Premonition I guess you’d call it. I think to some extent everyone possesses it. Have you ever thought of someone and next thing you know the phone rings and it’s that person ? I remember once that I was supposed to go hear my no ex husband’s group sing in New York. I was getting ready and this sense of foreboding came over me and I decided I wasn’t going. Trying to sense if it involved all of my friends who were going and then how to talk them out of going was hard. So I told them how I felt but they said they were still going. It turns out that since it was in upstate New York they had to drive down some pretty dark and isolated roads. Well they ended up blowing 2 tires on a pitch dark road and had to wait 5 hours before someone else came by. No cell phones then. I was so relieved to hear that was all it was though.
Dani, I love reading about all these wolves tales you tell us. Loved Changeling Moon and look forward to reading the next two
Thanks for the info.

Hi, Dani!
I love the wolf pack mentality – the loyalty & the commitment to their mates that wolves have.
I so enjoyed Changeling Moon, and am also looking forward to Changeling Dream and Changeling Dawn so much!
I am so impressed with all of the research you’ve done on wolves and were’s! I’ve learned so much by following you through your book tours.
Thank you for the giveaway chance.
I did not know about the wolves and the Cheyenne..I had no idea. I have heard the Yellowstone stuff that you talked about though. I also was tracking that lone wolf that came though Nevada not long ago looking for his mate. He has since moved on and is still looking..it’s been interesting to follow where he is and how far he’s traveled.
I love shifter, werewolf type stories, I really am all about the paranormals these days.
I can’t think of a time when I was involved in a prediction that came true..

Hi Dani! I can’t honestly say, that I have ever had any premonitions or know of any one who has, although, I think that everyone, has a little bit of a 6th sense. It could be Dejavu or a feelling that something is wrong, but I think that we all get those feelings from time to time. I enjoyed your post today, and I am sad to admit that I have not had a chance to read one of your books. They sound wonderful and obviously, I would love to get my hands on one! Thanks for the fantastic giveaway! bpatrick64113@sbcglobal.net
About 20 years ago we had a friend who said she got predictions quite often. One day, she told me that a stranger would come knocking at my door to make a delivery. Ok!! Well We did get a stranger and he was there to make a delivery: a summons to be on jury duty!
i cant say i have ever had a prediction come true.. dont really have much dealings with predictions though..
wolves though.. i love wolves!! i love the pack, the way they act, the way they look (like huskys but even more awesome.. lol).. i wish i could see them in the wild, i think that would be the most amazing thing ever
Congrats Alaina! Your name was drawn from the big red mixing bowl as the winner of the giveaway. Contact me with your mailing address at dani@daniharper.com and I’ll get your prize out to you.

YAHOOO!!!!
I do get strong instances of deja vu. When that happens I always tread carefully. When I was married, my husband and I were linked in some way. We constantly tried to call each other at the exact same time. Somehow we just knew we needed to speak to each other.
Wolves and Wares are a really interesting society because of the pack and everyone being there for each other and having each other’s backs.
I have had some bad dreams, but Thank GOD they have never come true and hope that it stays that way! But it does seem that my family are a bit more sensitive then other people like walking into a store and smelling your grandmother (who is now passed on) like you where actually at her home or doors opening or objects in different places from where you knew them to be. Also having dreams with deceased loved ones about current event things going on in our lives, but maybe that is our subconscious holding on to those we love during times we would normally turn to for advise. Weird stuff like that; maybe other people often have these things happen to them too. Who knows…. Anyways, one of the most strangest things that happened to me was when when my 3-year-old daughter pointed to the night sky waving and laughing and saying “Good Bye Nanny” over and over again the night Nanny (grandma) passed away! It was before we knew she passed away. That is the closest to a prediction our family has come to. We did not realize at the time what had happened and thought it was just the wild imagination of a 3 year old girl… Kids are so innocent and open. We loose that as we grow up I think…

I often have intense feelings of deja vu, but not actual predictions. I would love to read CHANGELING DAWN thank you.

I love that werewolves can take care of themselves but they have their pack to back them up. It would be nice to have people to rely on.

I liked the information you provided. It waAll your books sound very good. I’m looking forward to reading them.

I’ve been in love with wolves ever since I read ‘Jungle Book’. They are honorable souls. I was not aware of the wolves and their predictions, but I think we underestimate animals in general.
I would love to read CHANGELING DAWN.
I will never forget when my mom told my dad not to go to Florida with my uncle. i was about 12 and she just kept telling him..I have a bad feelin, somethings not right, Please don’t go. After a few days of listening to my mom dad decided she was having some sort of breakdown(his words not mine
and stayed home. Well, on the drive down to Florida my uncle blew a tire and flipped his car twice rolled into oncoming traffic and the car ended up totalled. My uncle ended up in the hospital for quite awhile. While I was shocked and upset when i heard about my uncle I couldn’t help but be thankful for my mom’s feelings about that trip. Needless to sasy we always listen to her when she says she has a bad feeling.
Thank you so much for the post and giveaway!

Hi everyone
Awesome blog ,I love Wolves ..I really aint to sure why I am all of a sudden so attracted all of a suden? I just am , I always thought that their is something special about them.
I love werewolves because of the sexappeal they bring with them. Most werewolves you read about leave your imagination with desire.

I don’t think I’ve ever predicted anything, per se. Sometimes I just have good deductive skills.
The description for Changeling Dawn sounds great, an interesting take on the werewolf story. Thanks for the giveaway!

Dani, I’m impressed by all your wolf research. I had no idea they were predictors. Very interesting stuff. I’ve always wondered what I would do with the gift/burden of foresight, but haven’t had to find out.
I love the strong mate bond with wolves and the protectiveness of weres.
Thanks for the info and good luck with your books.

I don’t think I have the gift of premonition but it’s spooky how often hubby and I will mention a place or person that we hadn’t thought of in years and the other says they were just thinking of them. We would frequently stop at the store and both purchase the same item on the same day. It use to really freak out our kids.
I’ve never had a prediction come true–or actually had a prediction involving me made, but I do love wolves in all forms in fiction and nonfiction. I just saw an article on maned wolves from South American. They bread a pair in captivity because they are endangered. I need to look up a bit more on them because I hadn’t heard of them before.
Werewolves, and shifters in general, are favorites of mine for so many reasons: protective and passionate natures, the pack dynamics and ahem…supernatural strength that’s good for SO many reasons.

I like wovles because they are strong and fearless.
I have not had a real prediction that came true. I think it would actually be kind of freaky if it happened to me.
I love wolves. They are beautiful and majestic and care for their family and friends in their packs.

Sometimes I think I know when the phone is going to ring, and sometimes I procrastinate doing something & something happens to make things even better.

My maternal grandmother often knew when things were going to happen
and would tell us what to expect. Her most memorable pronouncement
occurred on the day before the first anniversary of my Dad’s death. She
told my aunt (who passed the comment on to the family) that my Dad was
coming soon to take her home. During the early morning hours the next
day she suffered a massive stroke. She passed away in the hospital later
that morning.

I have experienced a lot of precognition through the years. I love all paranormal romance, but shifters are my favorite
That was a wonderful blog post. Thank you for sharing. That’s a lot of information about wolves and werewolves. Very interesting. As for precog, no, none in my family but my maternal grandmother had an after death experience. She was pronounced dead but came back to life later and told us that she went on a journey to the other world. It was weird.
Thanks for the giveaway.

Hi Dani my family has a gift if dream:). If we dream of bad result we will get good result and if we dream we will get good one instead we will get bad one
. Though I am not very sure is it a give or not:). Cheers aretha_zhen@yahoo.com
I can’t see what’s right in front of me most of the time.
I love the duality of werewolves, between their animal and human side. It’s a concept with nearly endless options for exploration!
Thanks so much for the giveaway!

I seemed to sense when my cousin was not doing well. He had a terminal illness and even though I was living 6 hours away from him, he would cross my mind and I could not get him out of my head until I checked on him. Sure enough, he would be back in the hospital. This happened many times over the years I lived away from our hometown. He lived to see my daughter born. His last morning on earth, he made sure to tell his mother that he wanted her to tell me goodbye for him me to tell my daughter. I didn’t make it to the hospital before he died but knowing he was thinking about me that day was enough.
Thank you for sharing your comments! I’ve really enjoyed reading them.
The names went into the big red mixing bowl today and I have pulled out ALAINA
Congrats to Alaina — Contact me with your mailing address at dani@daniharper.com and I’ll get your prize out to you.
