Those secret family recipes are so precious. My grandma had a great ice box rolls recipe which she was pretty protective of. In fact, when she gave it out, my sister suspected she left off key ingredients so no one could make it exactly like she did. My sis finally got the right one by watching her make them--like a hawk!

The folks who love lutefisk are very passionate about it. Churches in the northern Iowa region where my DH grew up host lutefisk suppers as fund raisers! But it's definitely an acquired taste.

Wow! I'm sure if I mentioned that to my boyfriend's dad, he would try to make it. They're very adventurous with food. They don't force me to eat things, but I've definitely expanded my taste buds in the last 10 years that I've been with Boyfriend.

The only food tradition I can think of is one that sadly doesn't happen anymore, but reading this post brought up the memory. My grandma on my dad's side made a great cornbread, and even though my parents split up when I was a toddler, my mom would still request it of my dad's mother. So my grandma would make two trays of cornbread on Christmas: one for the family, and one just for my mom who would pick it up when she came to drive me home from Christmas Day with my dad's family. My grandma died a few years ago and now I can't think of who might have that recipe.

Lutefisk does not sound good but it was interesting to read about it. We always have a traditional Thanksgiving meal but Christmas is up to the person hosting it. We are a casual bunch so you just want to make sure that there is something on the table for everyone including the kids.

Nothing but Norwegian was spoken in my DH's father's home till he went to school. We have a photo of my DH's great grandfather on his mother's side who first came to the US, made a little money and went back to Denmark to collect his bride. He's the only one in the picture who's looking off in the distance instead of staring into the camera.

We don't have any special traditions we're very traditional but I'm always looking for something special to add. Now don't take this the wrong way but I'm going to pass on yours.
