Hello all. I’m Bianca D’Arc, writer of paranormal romance for Brava. Zombies, vamps, weres, aliens and dragons – I’ve written them all – but I was thrilled with the fresh new voice I found when asked to be a mentor for the Writing with the Stars contest.
I’ve been honored and privileged to work with an amazing up and coming author. My mentee writes in my favorite genre of paranormal, so I knew we were going to enjoy working with each other from the moment I heard about her book, MOONLIGHT. Lisa Kessler is a name to remember and someone I’ve really enjoyed getting to know through the process of this contest and I hope you will too. So, without further ado, please welcome Lisa Kessler, author of MOONLIGHT…
Hello everyone!
Thank you for welcoming me to the Brava site and letting me hijack… *ahem* I mean be a guest on your blog.
It’s almost surreal to be here with so many other fabulous novelists, chasing after a dream to have my book published. Some mornings I almost feel like I need to pinch myself to be sure I’m not dreaming.
Or back with the palm reader in New Orleans.
I started writing daily in 1998 as an escape. My spouse at the time wasn’t supportive of my writing “habit” so I was often up until the wee hours of the morning writing. At the time, the thought of writing a novel or being published never crossed my mind. It was my outlet. I made up characters and places and escaped with them on adventures.
Before I realized it, I had filled up my entire One Gigabyte hard drive with text files! (At the time, one gigabyte was huge… This was the 90’s! LOL)
Anyway, in October of 2000, I took my family to New Orleans. Wow! Talk about a writer’s city! There were stories everywhere I looked.
On our last night there, I decided I wanted to visit a palm reader, just for fun. The kids went back to the hotel with their Dad and I pocketed my wedding ring just so I could see how “real” she was.
She took me into her candlelit room and started inspecting my palm. First she pointed out that I had two children, an older girl and younger boy. That got my attention. Then she told me I would have two great loves in my life. That puzzled me, but before I could say anything, she went on to describe my lifeline, career, etc.
It was the walk to the door that changed my life forever.
As I reached for the door, she smiled at me and said, “I have to ask. Are you a writer?”
“I write every night. Just for fun though.”
“Keep writing.” I swear her eyes sparkled. “You’re going to be a famous writer one day.”
I walked back to the hotel in a daze, but when I woke up the next day I suddenly had an idea for a book! I jotted notes for the entire storyline for my first book on cocktail napkins at the airport. A few months later, I finished my first novel. A few months after that I started getting my short stories accepted into magazines and anthologies.
But that wasn’t all.
My marriage ended up falling apart, and I met another writer in an online critique group. We became long distance friends and eventually we got married. Not only can I write anytime, but he’s also my first reader and helps me with all my editing.
And now I’m a finalist in the Writing with the Stars contest!
I still carry the note card the palm reader wrote out for me that night in New Orleans. It’s tucked away in my wallet as a reminder to keep working and never give up.
It’s been a long, bumpy and winding road to get here, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything!
Thanks so much to Bianca D’Arc for being an amazing mentor!!! And a special thanks to HelenKay Dimon who challenged me to write Moonlight last year.
After so many years writing alone in the dark, it’s been heaven to find such a supportive family of writers!
So what was your “Ah-ha” moment that led to writing your first book?

Lisa, what a great story. I’m so glad you found the palm reader, and a man who supports you on your chosen path. Congratulations on finaling, and good luck in WWTS.
My “ah ha” moment was when a friend gave me one of Natalie Goldberg’s books on writing. I’d never written, except for professional non-fiction, though I’d read fiction with a passion since I was tiny. It had never occurred to me to try writing fiction. Anyhow, when I asked my friend why he’d given me the book, he said, “Because you’re a writer.” Obviously, like the palm reader with you, he saw something in me that I’d yet to recognize in myself.
Anyhow, the book resonated, then I took a night school course based on Natalie Goldberg’s ideas, then I launched into my first novel. Like you, I sold many short stories – and I wrote many more novels – before I sold my first book. It’s definitely a lengthy journey but, like you, I wouldn’t trade it for anything else.
(Whoops!!! I think I commented in the wrong place before? *sigh* LOL)
Hi Susan! *waving*
Thanks for stopping by and commenting!!!
Isn’t it strange that sometimes others can see something in us that we miss ourselves? LOL
Thanks for sharing your story! I love hearing about ah-ha moments from other writers…
And thank you so much for the good wishes for the WWTS contest!!!

Hey Lisa! Great story. Looks like you’re headed for the happy-ever-after! Do you still go to palm readers or other fortune tellers??
Best of luck with the contest, too.
Hi Jeanne!!!
Thanks for stopping by today!!!
You know, I didn’t think about it before, but I have never been back to another palm reader! LOL
Apparently she was my first and last…
I’ve always been very interested in psychics though, and this series combines psychic humans with shape shifters so it’s been really fun for me to write!
How about you? What was the ah-ha moment that led to your first book?
Lisa
Wow. What a great story! Congrats on the WWTS finals. I can’t wait to see how it all turns out. It is a crazy journey, isn’t it? But a fun one. Write on, my friend!
Thanks for stopping by Lynn!!!
It’s definitely a crazy journey, but the good definitely out-weighs the struggles…
Good luck with your writing too!!!
Lisa
Great story Lisa! I started writing at the urging of my teenage daughter and her friends. For whatever reason we were talking about boys and I was sharing some of my horror stories from dating and they said I should write them down, so I did… Now many of the men/incidence from that ‘Boyfriend’ book is the inspiration of my books. Congrats on WWTS! Best of luck…
Hi Linda –
That’s a great ah-ha story!!! I love it!
SO does your daughter tell everyone she gave you the idea for your books?
Thanks for the good wishes on the WWTS contest and for stopping by the blog today and commenting!!!
Lisa
I’m so happy for you, Lisa!
You have such great energy in your work that I know you’ll make it!
Thanks Linda!!!!
I’m so happy I met you!!! You inspire me more than you know…
And whenever I get down and think things are too tough, I remember the story you told me about moving from a typewriter to your first computer and it lost your whole book. You’re the warrior writer I want to be!
Thanks for stopping by and commenting Linda!!!
Lisa
WOW, I got chills reading that story. That right there is a novel waiting to be written
Well then, it’s written in the stars isn’t it? You’ll win. I have no doubt about it. And if you don’t, I bet you’ll still end up with a fantastic pub contract!!!
I would wish you tons of luck in the contest, but really, I don’t think you’re going to need it.
So, instead, I’ll just say… can I pre-order a signed copy of Moonlight right now?!
Ha! You made my day JoAnne!!!
Once I have a copy of Moonlight you get the first signed one! LOL
I wish I remember where I found her in New Orleans. She had a little hole in the wall shop in the French Quarter. Someday I’d love to tell her Thank You!
Thanks for stopping by and commenting JoAnne!!! I really appreciate all your support!
Lisa
Hi, Lisa,
Reading about your trip to New Orleans brought back fond memories of my trip, and just like that, inspired a new romantic suspense.
Thanks a bunch for being her today,
Toni Noel
Hi Toni –

Sorry the blog got stuck in moderation!
I accidentally commented twice today too! LOL
Lisa
Hey Lisa!
I grew up with the sound of my dad’s old Royal manual typewriter in my ears as I fell asleep every night. The year I turned 8, he sold his first novel. The publisher needed a western, and that’s what he’d written.
All these years later, he’s had over 300 novels published under many different names. When I was younger, I didn’t think I had anything to say, as I hadn’t really lived. Now, though, I’ve got too much to say, lol! Getting laid off in 2001 was my opportunity to finally follow a dream.
I’m so glad my dad is still around to see his “little” girl get her first contract!
Cheers,
Christine
Hi Christine –
Oh I love that story!!!
So I have to ask who is your Dad? Maybe I’ve read his books!
I bet he was SO proud of you!!!
Thanks for sharing your story!
Lisa
ooooooo- not sure if the old brain can go back that far.
I started writing in fits and spurts in my early teens. Started my first “real” book in my 20′s but never finished it. Started my first FINISHED book sometime later
.
I think my “ah-ha!” moment came a few years ago when I realized that of all the things I was interested in, writing was the one I came back to
. So taking it seriously now!
Great blog Lisa- and GREAT luck in the contest!
Hee! So you had a really long ah-ha moment, right Marie!
I’m so glad you came back to writing! You’ve got such a creative imagination! Yow!
Thanks for the good wishes for the contest, and for stopping by and commenting!!!
Lisa
Hi Lisa!
That’s a fabulous story! There’s a palm reader I pass on my way to the day job– I’ve always been curious and, now that I’ve read your story… I may need to make an appointment! My “Ah ha!” moment is similar to Christine’s. I was laid off from what I believed was my dream job. I went home, cried my eyes out, ate way too much junk food, and started writing my first paranormal romance that afternoon. I figured that that if I had to re-invent myself, I was going to go whole hog and do what I’d always wanted to do. Write fiction.
I loved your excerpt in Romantic Times — and can’t wait to read more! Good luck!
~ Anne
Hi Anne –
Take the plunge and go get your palm read!
I was very skeptical, but over the years I’ve started to think she was the real deal!
Thanks for your good wishes for the WWTS contest! It’s been stressful and exciting all at once… Definitely a wild ride! LOL
You are so brave to venture out after your dreams after losing the “dream job”!!! I’m so glad it worked out for you!!!
Lisa
Hi Lisa! Very cool story about the palm reader! Congrats on finaling in the WWTS contest.
Hi Rebecca!
I’ve often wondered if the palm reader hadn’t taken that extra minute to ask about being a writer, would I have ever come up with the idea for my first book?
Would a different ah-ha moment have presented itself later?
Thanks for the good wishes on the contest, and for dropping by to comment Rebecca!
Did you have a certain moment that made you decide to write a novel?
Lisa
Ok this is weird, I posted here a few hours ago- looked like it accepted it and everything- yet it’s GONE!
Anyway I’m not going to re-write the whole thing-LOL. But I’ve been writing seriously for the last few years, but in fits and starts for over 20 years. I finally got serious when I realized that whatever else I’d go off to do, I always retruned to writing
.
Great post Lisa! And good luck!
Marie- hopefully THIS one will post!
ok, NOW my other one is there too….weird…
I think all the comments were trapped in moderation!
But it’s all better now!
Thanks for letting me know about your invisible comments Marie!
Lisa
Hey Lisa,
I’ve know you all my life and have not heard this story about the palm reader!
That’s really awesome that you had the psychic support your writing.
I got to read the manuscript for Night Walker (I think that was the title), I’m sure you will get published since it was better than several books I have read that have been published.
I’m not a writer, my creative outlet is making jewelry. Last spring I was taking 23 units in a credential program and kept thinking about all the jewelry I wanted to make. So, I decided to get myself online finally selling my sterling silver and 14k gold filled dangle earrings.
Good luck getting Moonlight to the next round of the competition!
P.S. We knew when we first met Ken that he is a fantastic guy, so of course he is your biggest fan!
Hi Robin! *waving*
Great to see you here!
I never told you the story about the palm reader in New Orleans??? Night Walker was the book that came out of the cocktail napkins at the airport!
It’s out on requests now so hopefully it’ll get published soon too! *fingers crossed*
I’m glad you found your creative outlet with the jewelry! Your earrings are beautiful!
Thanks for voting for Moonlight! I’ll let you know if we make the next round…
Lisa
What an amazing story! Lisa, that palm reader could sense what I have since meeting you. You are a wonderful and dedicated person…and a great writer. I can’t wait to celebrate your success, even if it will be from afar!
Hi Michelle!
I can’t tell you how amazingly cool it will be to finally see one of my books on your fabulous Book Review Blog!!! Talk about surreal!!! LOL
Thanks for all your encouragement and support!!! The palm reader failed to mention how many amazing friends I would make along this journey…
*HUGS*
Lisa
Hi Lisa
I LOVE that story. What a fantastic, unique first “welcome” to the writing community! Good Luck, my dear!
Hi Jennifer! *waving*
I’m glad you enjoyed my Ah-Ha story! (I always worry stories about myself are boring! LOL)
Thanks for all your support!!! I’m so glad we met up on Twitter!!! And if Moonlight makes it through this contest, I’m going to credit some of the success to the Fabulous VOTE button you made for me!!! LOL
Lisa

At the time I didn’t realize how much my life would change in teh span of a few years! It’s probably for the best that she didn’tt ell me or I might’ve just hidden in my closet! LOL
But as the dust settles, I’m grateful everyday for the path I found…
*HUGS*
Lisa
Cool story, Lisa! I don’t remember my aha moment. I’d always wanted to write but “never had time.” When my older daughter was about a year old, I wasn’t working (outside the home) and suddenly I had time. I sat down at the computer one day and that was it. I think I wrote my first book in three months–once I started, I couldn’t stop.
Hi Jill –
I’m so glad you found the time!!!
I know sometimes you have to make time around little ones and your dedication inspires me…
Thanks for sharing your story!!! I really appreciate your support!
