A nor’easter is a hurricane with the added fun of snow and freezing temperatures. People call New Englanders “hardy” for a reason. Since I’m a recent transplant, I huddle with my warm mug of coffee and find reasons not to go anywhere.

I live in New England, where autumn is just short of a religious experience. Mums are defiant little buttons of brightness, hedging the sidewalks near my building and the hillsides will soon blaze with color. They know our bitter nor’easters are coming, but for a brief time, the world dances in glory.

October is my favorite month. I grew up in New England and remember a Robert Frost poem from school that began “Oh hushed October morning mild, thy leaves have ripened into fall” (or something very like that!). I always think of that poem when we have a beautiful high, clear day like today.
