“Roadblocks” is a good way of putting it, Kate. I think of it as doors closing – but each time one does, a whole bunch of other doors open. You just have to decide which one(s) to step through.

I just got back from seeing Eat, Pray, Love, which also brings that message home.

Susan, I love that you found your bliss. I also love your description of your story. Now I’ll have to but it.

I’m still in that management job and working on how to leave to have more time to write. So, I envy your opportunity.

Your novels heroine reminds me of many young women I’ve taught or mentored. Women who for some reason were put down both personally and economically. Writing about that and seeing someone take charge, find her path and happiness is the reason I read romance. Thank you for supplying such a story.

Susan, I love this post! I’ve had any number of life-altering events that were, as you described, maybe not that big a deal, but they changed the course of my life for whatever reason. I was divorced when I was only 21, married again at 22 and a mother at 23–all of those were life-changing experiences. When I was diagnosed with MS at 35 I had another huge switch in my “plans.” (Love that saying–life is what happens when you’re making plans!)

I think of all of those events as roadblocks that make you take another route to get where you’re going, so my route’s been somewhat convoluted over the years, but I wouldn’t change a single twist or turn. Congrats on making lemonade out of your own lemons–I think success is all the sweater when the route to find it isn’t a straight line.

I’m a cancer survivor, Susan, so yes, I know what life-changing event means. But anything that makes you delve into your relationships with the people you love, to strengthen your faith, and see the world with fresh eyes does have an upside.

Life is terminal. How we live it is open to endless delightful possiblities. And we get to choose.
