As an author, one of my favorite things in the world is coming up with ideas for new stories. I never know when they’ll hit me or where the inspiration might come from. Sometimes it’s a song on the radio or something I see on TV. Sometimes they just come out of the blue. Whatever the case, I don’t question it, I just go with them & try to do them justice.
But when it comes to my October Brava release, THE BITE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, I can’t take full credit for the ideas on the pages. Instead, I must thank two very special people who are—sadly—no longer with us.
First is the late, great Kate Duffy, original Senior Editor of the Brava line. You can imagine my delight when I discovered she was interested in my work, but since I didn’t have anything particularly suited for Brava, we had a couple of brainstorming conversations over the phone where we (or more to the point, I) tried to come up with an idea she liked & could get excited about. Then one day, she said, “You know, I’d really like a Christmas vampire book. Think you could come up with something like that?” I remember that it was a Friday & that my response was something along the lines of, “Um…let me think about it.”
Now, I love vampires. I had even written a sexy, funny vampire story way back when that had actually finaled in the Golden Heart competition three years in a row. (Yeah, it was that good, thankyouverymuch.
) Unfortunately, my timing—much like vampires themselves—sucked. At that particular moment in publishing, paranormal was the kiss of death. I couldn’t give that book away, even though just a few years later, paranormal started to become all the rage. Of course, by then, I had sold other books & was busy fulfilling other contracts, so again—my luck & timing sucketh. And even after Kate asked me to consider doing something with vampires, I couldn’t send her that book because A.) it didn’t have a whiff of Christmas anywhere in it, & B.) it would have needed some major overhauling. (It’s true that I harbor dreams of selling it one day, but the overhauling would still be required.
)
Which brings me to the second person to whom I owe a debt of gratitude for THE BITE BEFORE CHRISTMAS’s concept. My best friend, Joanne Emrick, who also very sadly has passed away. Joanne was a writer, too, with dreams of selling to Harlequin Presents. But no matter what the idea or who it was targeted toward, she was the best plotting partner ever. As soon as I got off the phone with Kate, I called Joanne & filled her in. She suggested we get together the next day (Saturday) at our usual haunt to see what we could come up with. So we did. We were there when the restaurant opened & closed the place down, spending all day eating, drinking, & being very merry while we tried to come up with a Christmas vampire idea that would knock Kate’s socks off. I don’t mind telling you that there were some very rough starts & stops. And some of the ideas we came up with had us laughing out loud at how truly hideous they were. But by the end of the night, I was ecstatic—& charged to get home & start putting together my proposal.
I worked on it all the next day (Sunday), & by Monday morning thought it was ready for public consumption. First with my agent, who thankfully declared it “delightful.” Then with Kate, who was probably more than a little surprised to hear from me again so soon. But she loved it, thank goodness, & that is how THE BITE BEFORE CHRISTMAS was born.
From there, things got a little bumpy, & circumstances on both ends kept my Christmas vampires from seeing the light of day (which they aren’t particularly fond of, anyway) for a while longer. They’re here now, though, & I’m delighted to finally get the chance to share them with the world.
My only regret is that Kate & Joanne are no longer here to enjoy this moment with me. But I’m sure they’re looking down from Heaven, grinning from ear to ear at the book they helped bring into existence.

Such a touching story about Kate & Joanne
– the silver lining is they get to live on forever, since you fleshed out their ideas (or help with) into a book that will endure.
My favorite Christmas past was when I got engaged to my husband. You see, I was a party planner and he was a vampire with two uncooperative siblings…
Oh wait, sorry, that’s your book…
Oh yes, my husband. He took me to Chicago on December 23rd and proposed to me at the ice skating rink on State Street (while, unbeknownst to me his Chicago-based friends were recording it for later watching). Then we ate dinner on the 98th floor of the Hancock Bldg, got married 10 months later and our 12 year anniversary is in October.
And then there was this time when I watched It’s a Wonderful Life before bed, but when I woke up I was no longer a rich, beautiful vampire but an undercover cop…
Ha! You almost got me, Jessica. As a relative would say, “You little smart-ass.” *g* Your real favorite memory is great, tho! I can picture it & I’ll be it was *very* romantic.
It was romantic. Probably would have been more so if I hadn’t been complaining about the shoes I was wearing, griping b/c it was so cold, etc. But, hey, I was 22, I was doing my best.
Favorite Christmas memories? Wow…well my favorite day of the year is Christmas Eve. Why you may ask? If you’ve seen my last name, then you know my family is Italian. The big tradition is that Christmas Eve is the feast of the seven fishes. My mom for this meal cooks for fifteen instead of 5. NO JOKE…my house is leftover central until about the 28th or 29th. Now, I probably should’t post the menu because uninvited guests by the busload would stress my dear Mom out…but it is a seafood lovers delight.
The other tradition is something we still carry on today and also happens on Christmas Eve. It started when my Dad was a little boy. The kids would write their Dad a little note and in return they’d get a sweet. We still write little notes to my Dad every Christmas Eve. My mom even has most of them saved in a photo album.
That sounds like so much fun, Dee! And I *adore* seafood, so if you ever are allowed to invite a stranger, let it be me, me, me! I’ll just fill my plate then go off to sit in a quiet corner somewhere to to chow down.
And I love those little traditions that become so very special. When I was a kid, it was scavenger hunts. My mom & dad would leave clues starting in my stocking for our largest/best gift. They did it for Easter baskets, too! It was so much fun.
*four more months*
Not that I’m counting or anything.
I have too many happy Christmas memories to even begin to pick a favorite, and I’m looking forward to this Christmas where I’ll be snuggled up with some eggnog, reading a wonderfully entertaining and sexy vampire book by the amazing Heidi Betts!
And I agree–such a wonderful story on how your book came to be. I adored Kate Duffy and to hear how she was instrumental to this book was a great way to start the day.
I know what you man about too many great memories, Pam. It’s hard for me to pick, too.
I’m very happy to hear you’re looking forward to THE BITE BEFORE CHRISTMAS…although I hope you won’t have to wait until it’s *actually* Xmas to read it the first time. Hopefully we’ll get a copy out your way a little earlier than that.
Dee’s right, Christmas is sneaking up on us much too fast. So have we all started shopping yet…or are we going to put that off till the last minute?
I usually am done 2 weeks before Christmas. Here’s hoping it stays that way.
::raises hand::
Last minute!
I tend to be a last minute shopper myself. Mostly because I don’t like to buy stuff just to have something to give…I want it to be special & for the person to really like/need it. Then we get down to the wire & I’ll buy any damn thing I can find. LOL
I am soo excited about this book coming out! I’m in need of a Heidi book fix!!
Well my favorite Christmas memory is….hmmmm they have all been pretty good…and on Christmas eve “Santa” shows up for the kids and leaves big presents. even though they are both getting older…19 and 12….the rule is if you dont believe in Santa..you get NO gifts! but they both say Santa sure does look like Grandpa!!*snork*
Plus with my name I have Christmas all year round! Hollie Rieth(pronounced wreath)…..
Thanks, Hollie! You really do have the best name for the holidays…even better than Merry, I’d say.
So what about worst holiday memories. (Nothing too horrific, please.
) But at my house, for about 5yrs running, our furnace would die every single year on Xmas Eve. I kid you not. It got to the point where we practically planned on it, stocking up on blankets & kerosene for the heaters. LOL
My youngest child (she’s 11 now) was born on Christmas — about 1 AM. However, I can tell you exactly what time Christmas dinner was over at my in-laws because all of a sudden EVERYONE was in my hospital room. It was a little overwhelming for someone who had just given birth!
Ha! I’d say that counts as both a best & worst Xmas memory, Victoria!
Worst Christmas memories…
3. The time the Santa at my dad’s Christmas party cursed at me [I was about 6 and wondering why Santa was hitting on someone who wasn't Mrs. Claus].
2. The time I was working at a part-time job in college and the creepy Santa was trying to get me to sit on his lap. [I must really have a crazy Santa come to me vibe going on]
1. the Christmas we got snowed in and our company had to stay overnight. If you ever met this couple, you will see why prolonged exposure isn’t always the best thing. They are married for over 50 years but I can’t imagine them ever being happy with one another.
Uh-oh, Dee is being stalked by Dirty Old Santas.
Maybe that’s why I used to be repulsed by men with beards…
prolly the worst for me was the Christmas of 1972…dont remember a thing of it…my dad was sick..but home from the hospital…and he died a week later….
I’m sorry….
that was prolly too horrific huh?? …..Sorry!
No it wasn’t. Just want to give you a long distance hug though!
aww thanks Dee! Hugs back to you!
Oh, Hollie, I’m so sorry. Losing someone around the holidays like that is awful. I lost my dad the day before Valentine’s. (Which is why you don’t usually see me celebrating the holiday much; even as a romance author & even at WIPs, I tend to not be able to work up much enthusiasm–I *hate* Valentine’s Day, & not even for the usual reasons.) I lost someone just after Thanksgiving one year, too, & not a single Thanksgiving goes by without that memory popping up to haunt me at least for a little while.
{{HUGS}}
But not sadness when you read BITE, okay? Thankfully it will be out even before Xmas, so you can enjoy it before the true holidays threaten to funk you out.
Thanks Heidi! Didnt mean to bring ya’all down! I have alot of good memories too!!Life goes on!
I cant wait until Bite comes out! No sadness whatsoevah!!!
I’ll bet you had a lot of really great Xmases with your dad…& now you’ve got the kiddies to celebrate with, which always makes holidays even more fun.
Can’t wait to hear what you think of BITE, though. Has this one been a long time coming, or what?
Hey Heidi, I made it! Sorry,
I almost missed you. Looks like you are having a great time here. I can’t wait to read about Vampires in October.
Peace and love,
Paula R.
Hey, Paula! Better late than never. And, hey, you can always claim you’re keeping vampire hours.
That I am Mistress Heidi. That I am!!!
Peace and love,
Paula R.
