I’ve recently started a new novel (always fun for me). But when I start a book, I often try a few alternate beginnings as I try to find the first line and then the opening sequence that works best for me.
I’m a big believer in starting a story with an attention-grabber. The first line sets the tone for the story, and it lets readers know exactly what to expect from the tale. When I’m in a bookstore and searching for a new book, I always read the back cover blurb then I open the book and read the first paragraph. If I’m hooked by the beginning, I buy the book.
Yes, I’m all about those fabulous first lines.
Have you recently read a book with a fabulous first line? Then please, share it with me!

I love first lines! I’m reading a galley for ENEMY LOVER by Karin Harper, which will be out at the end of next month. Her first line is Irony is one fickle, messed-up bitch, Angela thought.
That caught my attention!
Oops, the author is Karin Harlow, not Harper.
I love this first line from “The Cowboy and the Lady” by Diana Palmer:
“They were at a standstill, the tall man and the willowy young blonde, poised like boxers waiting for an opening.”
Oh, Edie, you’ve made me jealous! I’ll put that one on my TBR list when it becomes available.
Hi, Virgina! I am such a Diana Palmer fan.
That is a great line!
I love all of the openings for J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood books. But a favorite is:
“I am so not feeling all of this cowhide.”
(The first line in Lover Unbound)
Heres the first line:
As Zach walked into the bar he caught her scent.
And the last line of the first chapter:
He grabbed her hair and pulled her head around for a fierce, branding kiss. Sealing them together for a lifetime. “You are mine. Happy Birthday Sara….”
