Do you have a favorite fairy tale?

When I was a kid, I used to love reading fairy tales. (Oh, who am I kidding? I still love them!). My favorite story was Beauty and the Beast. Hmmm…could that possibly be why I enjoy writing shifter romances so much? I do love a bit of the beast in my heroes.

Fairy tales (the not-so-Grimm) variety, got me hooked on happy endings. On love conquering all and on the hero and heroine surviving sometimes against magical odds.

Lately, it seems that re-telling the classical fairy tales is a popular trend. Old story, new twist. I’m intrigued by this trend, and I’ll definitely have to try out some stories. I’ve personally always wanted a new Snow White story. Why does she have to fall for the prince? Wouldn’t it be more fun if she fell for the hunter who was supposed to kill her? (But he couldn’t, of course, because he secretly loved her.) Or what about that Wicked Queen? Come on, even bad girls need love, too!

Yes, ahem, as you can tell, I’m all about the re-telling.

But what’s your favorite fairy tale? Is there a classic that you’d like to see re-told?

Happy Reading!

I love Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs. It’s got the sleeping beauty aspect (that I love–the girl falling asleep and waking only to love’s first kiss… what a great metaphor), and a demented villainous queen, but it also has unusual heroes, in the dwarfs. Although the prince ends up with the girl, the dwarfs are the real heroes. I like that.

I wouldn’t mind a re-telling where the dwarfs end up with the girl, too.

The hunter is definitely the Alpha in the story, though. So I can see why he might be a good person to get the girl in the end, too. I do like reformed bad guys.

Hey, Cynthia~~ I’m like you, I’ve always been a sucker for the Beast. The whole enchanted castle thing got me!! But I’ve also always wondered what if…Little Red Riding Hood fell for the Big Bad Wolf, and Grandma was the bad guy? And nope on the Wicked Queen. I’ve come to hate her too much, lol. You could maybe redeem the wicked step sisters, though…they mayber were just terribly misunderstood? LOL.

  3. Cheryl Says:

Beauty and the Beast has always been one of my favorites too. I believe the ‘fairy tale’ comes in that the beast is willing to change for Beauty.
I would really like to see a human version of the Ugly Duckling where beauty is decided by love and not by looks.

  4. Brandy Says:

My favorite fairy tale has always been Beauty and the Beast because Belle was such a caring and SMART woman and the Beast waiting for someone to look beyond his curse. Ahhh, romance.
Did you hear that a director wants to remake Sleeping Beauty-sort of. He wants to tell the tale from the point of Malificent.

This blog is making me laugh. My wip is a twist on Beauty and the Beast. But my favorite fairy tale is Puss N Boots. I’ve been trying for more than a year to fit a story around it, but so far haven’t come up with anything.

I mean Puss in Boots. I just had leftover turkey for dinner. I think my brain is napping.

  7. Jacki Says:

I always liked Snow White – but felt that she was too “whimpy”. If anyone wanted to make my day, they’d re-write it as ‘Formerly Snow White and the 7 Frat Brothers’!

    Hi,
My favorites are Beauty and The Beast (true love and compassion conquer all) and Peter Pan.

Hi, Melissa! Oh, Little Red is another favorite–adn wouldn’t it be awesome if she fell for that wolf? :-)

Hey, Brandy! See–that is why I liked Belle, too! She loved her books! And her beast! I hadn’t heard about Sleeping Beauty. Thanks for the head’s up on that one.

Now, Edie, you can’t tease like that! Tell me more about your WIP!

  10. Fedora Says:

Hi, Cynthia! I love fairy tales and now as a grown-up, I love retellings and new twists! I think Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorites, although I also enjoy other un-Disneyfied ones, like The Shoemaker and the Elves, and so on :)

  11. Cynthia Eden Says:

    LOL, Jacki, that’s hilarious!

Hi, Carol! I so loved that compassion was key in Beauty and the Beast.

  12. Cynthia Eden Says:

Hey, Fedora! Those twists are my faves. :-)
