Hot and Irresistible

Savannah SizzlesNext week my second book in my Savannah Sizzles series comes out. This is only a two book series of four orphaned girls an old murder that brought them all togehter.

Hot and Irresistible is Bebe and BrieAnn’s story and the men they fall in love with. Bebe is a detective in Savannah and a friend is accused of an old murder then new murders. Donovan McCabe, a Yank, is called in to solve the case putting Bebe and Donovan in opposite sides of the case during the day but the same side of the bed at night. Bebe was adopted by a woman who hated her…so why did she adopt Bebe? BrieAnn was adopted by judge and when she falls for Beau who’s father is accused of running an illegal gambling casino, the judge is not happy. What’s Brie to do? The heart wants what the heart wants but she loves her dad.

Prissy is back learning the voodoo ways of her grandmother, well she’s trying to learn the ways. Don’t drink and do voodoo it could be hazardous to your health and those around you. Charlotte is helping her fiancée Griff run Magnolia House and is not a fan of the Donovan McCabe but then even Southern women can be wrong once in a while.

Hot and Irresistible is one of those books of the heart. I love, love, love Savannah. I love the people, the speak, the little bit slower way of life and love. I love the food and going to The Pink House for crab cakes and Savannah Bistro for garlic grits that are to die for. And I love this old city and how it’s been restored. The twenty-one squares with the live oaks and dim lights at night, the cobble stone streets, how the whole city is under a canopy of trees protecting it from the summer sun and I especially love the restored mansions and old houses loaded with history and a few ghosts to make it all so interesting.

Hot and Irresistible is especially a book of the heart as I used my brother as a model for one of the characters. My brother’s name is Ray and he lives in Cleveland so I have a character named Ray Cleveland. He’s sixty-something and a terrific guy and the one accused of the murders that are tearing at the relationship between Bebe and Donovan.

I hope you all enjoy reading Hot and Irresistible as much as I loved writing it. I’ll give away two copies of Hot and Bothered and two T-shirts from the discussions.

Book 2 or making something from bits and pieces

Beth Williamson Icon

I have to admit, I’m a series ‘ho. I love to read books in a series from book 1 onward. God forbid I read book 3 first, then it’s just a frackin’ mess and I’ve ruined the series forever in my mind.

Okay, that’s my confession for today. Anal retentive? Moi? Oh, it is to laugh… but yeah, especially about series.

I’m writing the second book in a series for Brava under the name Emma Lang. The first is called Ruthless Heart set in Utah 1872, which comes out in June, 2010. You can see the delicioso cover here. Now the second book, tentatively titled Boundless Love (not sure on that one so speak up on it), is the story of Angeline, sister to the heroine Eliza from Ruthless Heart.

Angeline is in the book a total of 6 pages. Now I tell you, creating book 2 from bits and pieces in book 1 can be challenging. People often ask me where I get my ideas. Well, sometimes they’re from crumbs, literally. Angeline is very young, just 18 in her story, beautiful, blonde and has always done what everyone has expected of her until she runs away – note that she has also been raised to be a good Mormon wife. She’s torn between what she’s been brought up to believe, to practice, to live with what she knows to be the right thing to do.

Therein are the crumbs of her story. She’s on the run from an abusive husband (she’s wife #3) with wife #2. So you can imagine she’s paranoid, jumpy, secretive and obviously a lot stronger than she thought she was. It’s crumbs, but they are rich crumbs, ones at the bottom of the crumb cake box that are the best part of the cake.

I’ve started with just a name before, so Angeline’s story isn’t completely barren. I know she’s going to discover a lot about herself and she’s going to find out that love can be stronger than the law. I know her hero, Samuel, is going to find out that a crooked leg isn’t as weak as he thinks it is. And at the end, I’ll sigh because Angeline and Sam will find their happily ever after.

Yep, romantic here. Proud of it. :D

It Happened Again. . . and not. . .

I just had the moment that authors wait for — copies of my December book arrived on my doorstep. Somehow, a book never feels real to me until I open that box and see and smell the final version.  And, of course, it’s the moment when I get to celebrate my new release with. . .

. . . the UPS guy!

Mine has been through all the ups and downs of publishing with me — the rejection packages, the manuscripts through copyediting, the first book, the next one and so on. He seems to know when it’s a good package or a bad one. He’s watched me scream, he’s watched me cry, he’s watched me smile. And he still brings the next one up to my door and waits to see me open them.  Then he nods, waves and drives his big brown truck off to his next delivery.

Well, that happened last Friday.  The knock on the door, the box on the steps, the driver waiting as I opened the door and then the box.  I held up the book and he waved and drove off.

And I stood looking at the final copies of a story I never thought I’d get a chance to tell. A story that was a leap of faith for me to send to an editor. A story that took me outside my comfort zone as a writer. A story that Kate Duffy convinced me I should write for her and for Brava.

So, as I stood there checking to see if the words inside were the words I remembered writing, I read the dedication and realized that I’d never have the chance to write a book with Kate again.  And that tamped down the usual excitement and all I could do to ease that was to content myself  knowing that she had been invaluable to me while writing the story. One suggestion, one recommendation from her, changed the whole dynamic of the story and the characters and made it the story it should be. . . and the one it is now.

The one I hope readers will love as much as she did….

        This one’s for you, Kate…..

Suck.

Okay, maybe not as much for writers. I did get Karl off to work this morning—at the ungodly hour of 6am, which means we were up at 5am. No one should have to get up that early. It’s unheard of. And, he won’t be home until 7:30 tomorrow morning. (the life of a paramedic) If there’s a bad storm or something then I’ll only have Sukie here. She’s a Pekinese. She’ll actually be hiding under the bed.

Karl bought me this wonderful coffee pot for my birthday. It’s a Keurig. I can go to the kitchen, put in a single brand coffee thingy, close the lid, hit tall cup, and have a fresh cup of coffee in about 15 seconds—Hazelnut flavored at that. In fact, I just did. Fast, isn’t it. I bet y’all didn’t even notice I was gone. But I was, and now I have this nice hot cup of coffee.

Okay, I’ve sooooo got to do an incredible amount of work done today so y’all be sort of good.
Hugs,
Karen
