The election is (finally) over. I’m not sure how I’ll fill my time now…well, maybe I can finish the revisions on one book and get back to writing the other. While I do that (and panic about how fast the day goes and how little I manage to get done), I thought I’d hold a contest.
I have two new releases – TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT, a Christmas antho with fabulous Brava authors Donna Kauffman and Jill Shalvis, and HOT AS HELL, a single title. Tell me about how much time you spent thinking, reading and working in election-related things over the last few months and you’ll be entered to win your choice of TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT or HOT AS HELL.
And as a little teaser, here’s a short HOT AS HELL excerpt:
CHAPTER 1
“This is your idea of a vacation?” Noah Paxton asked the question with a practiced level of calm he did not actually feel. By the way Alexa Stuart – Lexy to him – jumped up and out of her pool lounge chair, he guessed the fake tone did not impress her either.
Dark sunglasses hid her eyes, but her dropped jaw suggested he caught her off guard. “Noah?”
She remembered his name. That was something. “Miss me?”
She settled back in her seat and smoothed out the magazine she just crumpled in her fists. “No.”
“I’m going to take that as a compliment.”
She flipped her sunglasses to the top of her head and squinted up at him with intense green eyes. “What are you doing here?”
Funny but the woman did not look at all surprised to see him. Probably had something to do with the fact she ruined their relationship, screwed with his career and then ran. She had to know he would track her down eventually.
“I could ask you the same question,” he said.
“You already know the answer to that one. I’m on vacation.”
“Uh-huh.” That was all he could think to say while trying to ignore the size of her tiny pink bikini. The thing seemed to shrink the longer he stared at it, but maybe that was wishful thinking.
With the burning southern Utah heat bouncing around and searing through his long-sleeve shirt, he understood her less-is-more theory of dressing. Still, there were other resort patrons hanging in the area. As far as Noah could tell, they all had eyes.
He scanned the pool deck to make sure none of those eyes belonged to men and none were staring at Lexy’s incredible shrinking bikini. Only a few other people braved the beating sun on the pool deck. Most of them sat up to their necks in the water. All but one was female.
The male-female ratio qualified as the only positive Noah could find about the high adventure hiking spa Lexy chose as her temporary playground. Not that he knew what the hell a high adventure hiking spa even was. He read the description online three times before jumping on a plane to retrieve Lexy. Once he saw the price of the joint, he seriously considered changing careers from security analyst to spa owner.
He wondered how the folks who ran the place convinced otherwise competent people to shell out a couple grand a week to stay at a no-frills location in the middle of nowhere. The place in question consisted of a few single and two-story stucco buildings painted almost the same color as the towering red rocks ringing them.
Deep in a valley and about two hours from Las Vegas, the spa felt more like an isolated boot camp than an expensive resort. Clean with well-kept grounds but no extras. A bit too much of a throwback to his military days for Noah’s comfort.
“How did you pick this joint?” he asked.
“What’s wrong with it?”
“Aren’t we touchy?”
“Let’s just say I’m waiting for you to tell me whatever it is you came the whole way here to say.”

I’ll post a winner here in the comments section by Friday. Good Luck!

Probably not as much time as I should have, especially considering local elections, and I never do, which is a shame. I’m relieved it’s over now and that I did go and vote last night, standing in line for about 10 minutes. But even if it had been an hour, I would have stood there.
Hmm… as Stacy said, probably not as much as I could have, considering all that was going on! I’m thankful the parcel tax we backed passed though–hooray for local politics! And double hooray for absentee ballots!
Oh geez, plenty. Way too much time following it. still pooped considering how late I stayed up. . . boy do I need a nap. LOL So yeah, I’m wondering what the heck all that time is going to be filled with now. Bet the news will find something.

I’m not sure exactly how much time I spent on all the election materials during the last few months. However, I do know that I spent all day Saturday going over everything and searching for more information on the internet so I could make as informed a decision as possible on everything on the ballot. I probably should’ve spent a bit more time going through things, but I feel that my day long marathon on Saturday went pretty well.
yes over really historic nite.
hot excerpt, congrats on teh books
Oh, I live and breath the stuff. I watch all the networks, read the papers, go online and will discuss it with anyone. Others come to me because they can’t be bothered and I try to give them a thorough answer on the topics. I try to get as many people to vote as I can and I’m happy to say I’ve been successful in some cases. My two daughters are very informed and active and one of the priorites for boyfriends (one now a husband) is that they are involved too lol. I’m extremely glad the ads are over and the phone calls though! Now I’m hooked on “The Transition to Power” lol.
I usually watch a couple of the morning news shows as I’m getting my kids going, walking on the treadmill and then getting ready for work so I have seen a lot of politcial talk these last few months but now I hope that we don’t hear any political talk for a while.
I was so glad when early voting started. I voted the first week in October.
I have been burned out on all the news media and the commercials for a while. I never thought the primaries would be over.
I am just glad that the time has come for the candidates to clean up the mess they made with all the signs everywhere.
What a pile of trash those signs are going to make.
I hope there is a way to recycle them.
The excerpt for HOT AS HELL is just the breath of fresh air I needed.
Thank you for posting the excerpt.
I am so glad the election is over! No more campaign ads or election junk in our mail box.
I spent about half a day reading the election pamphlets, filled out my ballot and mailed it in.
I don’t know how many hours I spent reading and watching everything I could on both of the candidates! My family ended up limiting my time on the computer if that is any indication.
I followed it initially, so about 2 years ago, and I sat down to think about what I wanted in a candidate before the primaries. Once we were down to 2 candidates, I figured out pretty quickly which one I was going to support and all the extra info since just solidified my choice in my mind. I watch the news, read the papers, and listen to the radio, but I will admit to fast-forwarding through the politics stuff within the last few months because I just got so sick of it. This election went on WAY too long!
I am SO GLAD the election is over. Yay! Also – the land line will be free, no constant political commercials… people hopefully will stop talking about it in a few days… It’ll be amazing and excellent.
As for reading things :X I feel like I was pretty bad. I didn’t read as much as I did in 04, I feel like. Granted I was taking polsci classes then and assigned to volunteer for a presidential campaign. Thinking about election type things, hearing about it… well over a year. Almost daily. I live in a battleground state – and it was wild.
I got most of my election coverage and news from the newspapers. I saw the debates and I’m glad all the political ads are gone.
As a Canadian obviously no way near the time any of you have, but the world revolves around American politics so I have to admit way more than I’d like. I say that because I hate being an helpless bystander and as a control freak having no say makes it hard to watch.
I watched the morning news shows as week. I tried to limit my reading online, but it was hard. I’m happy to be alive at this time to witness history being made. In fact, the entire campaign season itself was historical and something to be remembered.
However, I’m more than ready to get back to my writing (and reading).
Not As Much as I should have either. Tried to watch some of the debates, speeches.
Read your Christmas anthol – loved it; always look forward to the yearly October Christmas novellas. So count me in for Hot as Hell – looks good – cover and excerpt.
Not as much as I should have. I did stay up late to see who won.
I made my voting decisions for local and national races and actually voted 2 weeks ago in advance voting. Since I had already voted, the last 2 weeks have been agony for me. I got so tired of the phone calls, debates, and increasingly negative ads. I am glad that it is all over. I want to take a complete break from politics. I think I will go read a book!
I watched some of the debates and the news. I am glad all the tv ads are no longer on.
Tami
I watched the debates but I don’t know how much time I really spent deciding. I truly was still conflicted up until an hour before I voted. I have been dying to read Hot as Hell!!
Hi HelenKay!
I did spend a good deal of time reading and thinking about the candidates, but admittedly very little time working this time around. I did vote, and I hope everyone else took their chance to be counted too. I love the excerpt!
This year was the first time my son could vote, and he had the news channels and pundit coverage going pretty much all day long. We all voted together which was kind of a kick, but so, so glad we can move away from 24 hour news.
As a Uker I was pleased that USA ended up with their first black president, I never expected it to happen in my life time. Especially as I have been more aware of time as I celebrate my 50th birthday today.
Way too much time, between listening to the debates, seeing the commercials over and over and over.
I didn’t pay attention to how much time I invested, if it sounded like I knew what I heard was good news for me, I held that those thoughts, happy it’s finally over though.
Please don’t enter me in the contest. I didn’t spend as much time as I probably should have throughout the pre-election – I burned out early after being bombarded with commercials for so long, but I did do a fair amount of research in the last couple of weeks.
I am so happy that it’s all said and done – I never thought I’d be happy to see regular advertising, but I am!
I knew who I wanted to win the main election a long time ago. I did do some reading on the referendoms as the language can be so confusing! Also checked out the school board candidate! The TV ads I skipped over. I hate negativism!! I checked out the BBC’s take too as they aren’t biased!
Since I’m a little late, I’ll go ahead and pick TWO winners. Congrats to Gigi and Liz Falkner!!! Email me with your choice and address and I’ll get those books out next week.
To everyone else, thanks for stopping by and chatting.
Congratulations Gigi and Liz!
Thank you so much HelenKay for the book.
I am sending you my mailing information right now.
