Wha?

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007
Donna Kauffman Icon

Oh sure, sure, I get my power back in time to watch Top Chef and they have the nerve to send my guy Tre home. What’s up with that? Yeah, yeah, so what he was executive chef? Send Slow Onion Chopper Monk Fish Overcooker Casey home first. So not happy with that outcome. And now I get to pout over it for two weeks. Rrr.

And over on Last Comic Standing, they’re all funny and I have no idea who, out of the five, I’d send home. To be honest, Ralph’s drunk uncle was funny for about a minute or two, but it shouldn’t have been his whole set. And I really wanted John’s set to be better, because he’s funnier than that. Lavalle packed a ton of stuff into his set, and Jerry was funnier than I expected him to be. I just hope it’s not Amy going home. I like her.

Oh, and I did a quick catch-me-up of Big Brother. Why? I still don’t know. Weirdest season ever, and that’s saying something. Dick is a piece of work and a nasty piece at that, his daughter is really smart but really whiney, Amber should be dehydrated from all the damn crying she does, honestly she should get that checked, Jen is a freaking robot, Eric kind of amazes me with how he’s managing to work in all the whack stuff America is making him do, though with a smaller crowd, it’s catching up with him now, and we’re all conveniently forgetting how catty and nasty Jessica was to Carol in the beginning because she’s being all cute and airheaded now. Oh yeah, Zach. Great bunny costume, dude. I don’t get you, though. And Jameka is proving she’s a tough girl in a house full of whack. Who do I want to win? Um. Hmmm. Well…. Yeah, it’s like that. SO glad I bothered.

Is it the Fall Season yet? It really needs to be the Fall Season. Now, please.

Don’t forget to enter this week’s SHaQ Attack contest. Details in Monday’s post – winner announced tomorrow!

Donner Lake fire

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007
Jill Shalvis Icon

I was just lamenting I didn’t have anything to suitably distract me from writing this week, but that’s over because we’re on fire again here in Tahoe.

Big distraction.

This time it’s far closer to home, just above Donner Lake.

The power of positive thinking worked so great last week for my daughter with her heart issue, I’m at it again. Keep your fingers crossed they get control of this blaze quick! And when they do, I am hereby promising the page gods that I will NOT look for another distraction, I’ll sit my ass in the chair and write, write, write.

Update: The fire is 100% contained, so yay firefighters!!

Lunch Break

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007
Sylvia Day Icon

So, today I joined my daughter at lunch and found out that she hadn’t eaten at snack time. Her teacher said they’d managed to coax her into taking her snack out to the tables, but they couldn’t get her to eat it. I was bummed about that, but she did eat everything when I sat with her and she drank all her milk. I spoke to the lunch monitor and I think I found out what the problem has been.

It’s been raging inferno hot here in SoCal. Over 100 degrees every day. They haven’t allowed the kids to play outside because of the heat (which is dry like an oven here, not humid) so all the kids have been crammed into the multipurpose room during recess and lunch. Let me tell you… the noise of hundreds of kids screaming and laughing is loud outdoors. Inside, it must have been deafening. The lunch monitor said it was. They were relieved to let the kids loose on the playground.

So I think that’s been a large contributor to my daughter feeling overwhelmed. After eating outside with me today, she ran out to the playground with her friends and had a great time. I’m hopeful that things will become easier for her now that the temperature is lowering a bit. She wants me to have lunch with her again tomorrow and I’ll go, but I think after that she might be okay. I’m going to use Jessica’s suggestion and give my daughter a token of some sort for snack time. I suggested a rock or a necklace, and my daughter liked both ideas. We’ll see tomorrow when I meet her for lunch if it helped her to feel comfortable enough to eat her snack. *fingers crossed*

SHaQ Attack Monday!

Monday, August 20th, 2007
Donna Kauffman Icon

It’s time for this week’s SHaQ Attack contest question.

Your mission, Blog Babes, if you choose to accept it, is to name an amimal I’ve had in any of my books other than a dog. (Hey, I was going to ask you to name all the dogs I’ve had in books, but that would be quite the list!)

Send answers to donna@donnakauffman.com with Pick My Pet! in the subject line. I’ll draw a winner from all entries on Friday. Winner gets a free book from my bookshelf.

And I have two winners books waiting to go out – I lost all my packaging supplies (along with a few books) in my recent fun with flooding. But they will go out this week!

Happy Monday everyone! :)

So ready for a new season…

Down here in the South, we’ve been having daily temperatures topping out in the triple digits. Just walking to the mailbox makes me breakout into a sweat. Oh, jeez, but I am so ready for fall to arrive!

I LOVE fall–it’s my absolute favorite time of the year. The weather is just right, the leaves are gorgeous, and I get to gear up for one of my most anticipated holidays–Halloween. (I write paranormals–come on, didn’t you see that one coming?) I went to a local crafts store a few days ago, and they already had their ghostly decorations placed on at least six aisles. I discovered the same situation at a nearby Walgreen’s. The summer heat is beating down–full force–and the pumpkins are already out. Yep, it’s a bit early (perhaps way more than a bit), but I do so enjoy seeing these decorations, and they just make me long for fall all the more. Sigh.

So what about you? Do you have a favorite time of the year? Or a holiday that you love planning for long in advance?

The Wilds Of Maine

Saturday, August 18th, 2007
Kathy Love Icon

Hello Everyone!

Okay, I just so totally disappeared this summer.  Not just from The Midnight Hour, but pretty much from everywhere and everyone.  Except for from my kid.  I did take her along–she’s five, so she gets a little anxious if I vanish on her. :)

I was at my parent’s place in Maine for several weeks–which means no internet, no cell, even a limited long distance plan on their house phone.  You know, at first, it was just awful.  I felt so disconnected from the rest of the world.  I literally checked my cell phone several times a day–knowing full well that I didn’t have service.  No, really, I did.

But after the initial shock–and there was even this awful irritable and testy phase like giving up caffeine or smoking–anyway, after the first unpleasant shock, I really enjoyed the sense of freedom that having none of these devices gave me.  I did a few things I haven’t done in a long time.  I worked on my WIP using a pen and paper.  Long hand, yes I know, it’s crazy.  I allowed myself to read for pleasure, with no guilt that I should be doing something else.  I took long walks to think about my story ideas.  I taught my daughter to swim and how to catch frogs.  Sometimes I just floated on the lake in an innner tube and listened to the loons (water fowl–not my relatives).  It really was lovely.

But that all being said, it is nice to get back to my beloved DSL and T-Mobile, too.  I feel back in the loop.  But my trip did give me a lot of time to just relax and think and create.  I feel calm and happy.  And I feel like writing, which is always a good thing.

Did anyone else do anything this summer that helped them relax?  Please tell me I wasn’t the only one to give up technology cold turkey?

Happy Saturday

Katherine Garbera Icon

So is everyone enjoying the start of the weekend? I have my usual chores as well as some pages to write today. I usually like to do a little cleaning and then get out of the house to go to a movie. What do you do on a Saturday? Sports with the kids, lunch with friends, check out the mall or do something outdoorsy?

Let me know.

My London Adventure

Thursday, August 16th, 2007
Katherine Garbera Icon

Me and Rob!
I had the chance to go to London in July to visit an old friend (Hi, Rob!) and do a little research for an upcoming book I’m working on for Brava. I’ve always longed to go to the United Kingdom and enjoyed my visit. Even if it was a bit soggy. Here are some pictures of my trip along with my comments about it.

First of all let me say that it’s odd not to have trash cans on the street. I understand why there aren’t any (terrorist used to plant bombs in the trash cans) but carrying around empty water bottles in my purse was cumbersome! At Waterloo Station you had to pay to go to the bathroom. This probably makes me sound very much the gauche-American but hey, I am one! Paying to go to toilet seemed funny to me. Here’s a photo of me in front of the London Eye. My 15 year-old daughter kindly pointed out that my hair looks crazy–in my defense it was windy that day!

The London Eye

They had record rains while I was in the UK, but I still managed to see quite a few sites…including this one which Harry Potter fans will recognize. My 15 year-old, you remember her–the hair police, is a huge Harry Potter fan and since she couldn’t come with me on this trip I went to King’s Cross Station for her.

Platform 9 3/4

London was a fascinating and busy city. What I enjoyed most about it were the areas away from the touristy locations. There was this wonderful path in St. James Park that reminded me a bit of the mall area in D.C. and Central Park. Of course much cleaner than Central Park. I liked strolling down the path and just feeling the cool breeze ruffling my hair. Here is a photo I took that I think captures the peaceful feeling I had at that moment. What’s amazing to me is that I was in the middle of London!

St.James Park

I also got out and saw a bit of the English countryside.

English countryside

And took in Stonehenge which to be honest was a bit of a disappointment. I wanted a mystical feeling from the place and instead felt really touristy. But here’s a photo of me there!

Me at the Big Rocks!

The trip was a lot of fun and after 15 years of friendship Rob and I have discovered we have a bit more between us. I’ll write more about that in another post.

So have any of you waited for an adventure? And if so, what was the result of finally going on it? Was it what you expected or more??

Kathy :)
