Last Comic Weeping?

So, the final five is now four. My favorite, Amy, stayed. I was thrilled for that. And then she delivered her worst set yet. Sob. The others remaining? Lavelle Crawford, who had a really off the wall set. Jon Reap, who did make me laugh out loud several times (yay Jon, my other fave!) But, other than the very gratifying surprise of Ralph going home this week…there was that surprisingly great set once again by Gerry Dee. Who knew?? I thought he was really funny.

So…going home this week? Yeah, it’s going to be Amy.

If I had to rate them tonight, I’d say Gerry, Jon, Lavelle, Amy. But Lavelle’s grizzly bear set was one loooooong act for not much punch at the end. Didn’t make me laugh. Amy, it could have been yours!

But the others might want to step it up a little, otherwise Gerry’s going to steal this thing! (Which, fine by me, but I want better comedy, dammit. Make me laugh.)

Don’t forget! You have until 8pm EST tonight to vote for who goes home on Big Brother – Amber or Zach. I’ll announce a winner tomorrow morning for this week’s SHaQ Attack. See Monday’s post for the details!

My love for tv even extends to commercials. Yes, it?s sad.

We haven’t done this in awhile. Favorite commercials. At the moment, mine is the cell phone commercial, the one where the dad goes to his kids “each of the five of us can call five people for free, so it’s like 26 people”. And the kids roll their eyes and say “dad, five times five is twenty five, not twenty six.” And he says “No, you have to carry the nine. Five times five is twenty six.” And then the mom deadpans “kids, this is why you have to stay in school.”

Love it.

You?

Too Much Talking

I’m circling in on a deadline. Southern Utah setting. A guy with a not-so-pleasant past. A woman who wants more information. A dead guy…

While writing I keep thinking about something I read at Diana Holquist’s blog a few weeks ago (she actually posted it about a month ago, but I didn’t find it until recently). She was talking about how there is too much dialogue in books. Honestly, it’s not something I thought about until I read Diana’s thoughts and now I think about it on and off – damn her!

Diana says:

And if there’s one thing that there’s WAY too much of in fiction today (especially romance novels!) it’s dialogue. I have a good friend who says the best way to write dialogue is to write it, then cross out 75%. I think 90% might be a better bet for most writers. In my final edits, I often cross out at least a good half of utterances, and every slash makes the scene better.

Now, I actually enjoy dialogue. It’s one of those things I think I do well…usually. So, being the insecure writing type I am, Diana’s comment got me thinking – again, damn that Diana!

But, her comments about cutting dialogue do ring true for me. I revise as I go (and then revise again later). When writing the beginning of a book, I give myself permission to overwrite. This result is what you would expect – circular and unnecessary dialogue. That’s okay since no one else really sees it. From there, I edit and pare down. Only after that can I move to the next part of the book.

Basically, allowing for “too much” at the beginning, I put a character in my head. Cutting and revising spares you guys from having to wade through all of that when reading the actually book. Of course, I always worry I cut too much or not enough (see previous comment about being insecure writer). Diana’s comments kind of highlighted that concern – I curse her a third time!!**

Do you guys think there’s too much dialogue in most romance books? I’m just wondering if this is a general feeling people have. I never really focused on the amount while reading. Sure, there’s bad dialog out there. Maybe this is really the same problem. Not sure. Will have to focus next time I read.

** Despite the fact Diana ruined my day (week!), go pre-order her newest Sexiest Man Alive anyway.

Emphasis on the dum dum part. Sigh. Eric, Eric, Eric. What a weenie. He has the chance the break up the Donato Evil Duo and what does he do? Wimps. Out.

But! Now life is much easier for Blog Babes everywhere as you have a 50-50 shot of guessing the right evicted hammie this week. So…will it be Amber? (or Waaaaaaaahhhmber, as I like to call her.) Or Bunny Suit Zach??

Send in your votes by tomorrow, Thursday, at 8pm EST (although because of football, I won’t get to watch it until 2am….yikes! Figures!!) Thank goodness for the internet…I’ll find out tomorrow night anyway…and a winner will be posted Friday morning. Check Monday’s post for voting details. And for those of you who already voted and perhaps went for someone other than these two? You may vote again. I forgot they would be doing the veto before the final vote. (Shows you how much I pay attention.)

See you Friday! Same Blog Babe time, same Blog Babe station.

A typical conversation

Me: Hi, you’ve got to come home NOW.

Him: I can’t bring you cookies, I’m in the middle of a concrete pour.

Me: There’s a squirrel.

Him: Still not bringing you cookies.

Me: Okay, let’s play a game where you LISTEN TO ME. There’s a squirrel in the house. INSIDE the house.

Him: Is this because I fell asleep with the TV on?

Me: No, it’s because THERE’S A SQUIRREL IN THE HOUSE.

Him: Get Ashes.

Me: It yelled at her and she’s cowering in the bathroom. We need you. Come home.

Him: (big sigh) Fine.

Me: Thank you. Oh, and can you bring cookies?

Today is one of those busy “must get XXX number of pages written” days. But, if you miss me (of course you do), you can stop over at the Brava Blog where I’m talking about all the new television shows coming out that have paranormal elements.

I also posted a review of Sarah Strohmeyer’s The Sleeping Beauty Proposal at PBR. The premise of the book is a little different, but the writing is smart and funny. Go check it out.

Everywhere You Look

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007
HelenKay Dimon Icon

We all know novels with paranormal aspects have been huge hits over the last few years. All you have to do is look at the bookshelves at B&N, or whatever other bookstore you frequent, to see all the titles and covers with werewolves, shapeshifters, vampires, witches, demons and other sorts of otherworldly creatures. But has anyone noticed this popularity translating to cable network television shows?

Yeah, I know all about Buffy and Angel. Not those. I’m talking about new shows. For example, I saw commercials the other day for two upcoming shows centered on law enforcement vampire dudes and another on a diary where this young woman writes down her vindictive thoughts and they then come true. There were others but that gives you an idea.

Have you guys seen this trend? I’m wondering if the shows were out there before but off my radar screen until now. Maybe I’m only noticing because I’m so in tune to the paranormal romance novel phenomenon.

What do you think? Are you watching these programs? Are you going to? And, if you are/do do you read paranormal novels as well – ie, is your love of paranormal consistent in books and shows, or do you prefer one over the other?

Let’s hear your thoughts. One lucky commenter will win a copy of one of my books – your choice.

SUPERB AND SEXY

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007
Jill Shalvis Icon

First there was SMART AND SEXY (4/08). Next comes STRONG AND SEXY (which comes out in December). And then . . . SUPERB AND SEXY, pub date of June 08. If you read SMART AND SEXY, then you’ve met my hero and heroine already, Brody and Maddie.

I finished their story. I’d like to say it nearly killed me but that sounds dramatic.

But it did. Anyway, here’s the back cover copy:

When you want to fly the best, you fly Sky High Air. And when you want spectacular adventure and scorching seduction, Jill Shalvis’s tantalizing, talented pilots Noah, Shayne, and Brody will get you there—fast, slow, or any way you want it…

BUCKLE UP. IT’S GOING TO BE QUITE A RIDE.

Despite his brooding bad-boy attitude, Brody knows life has treated him pretty well. His luxury charter airline, Sky High, has given him financial security and the means to take to the skies whenever things on the ground get complicated. And lately, things have become very complicated, thanks to the insanely passionate, or perhaps just insane, kiss he shared with Sky High’s gorgeous, wisecracking concierge, Maddie. He’s tried to keep his distance, but now Maddie desperately needs help, and it’s triggering protective alpha-male urges Brody didn’t even know he had…

For months, Maddie hid her crush on sexy, exasperating Brody behind a cool, kick-ass exterior…and then blew that to smithereens by jumping him in the lobby. Yeah, real smooth. She’s tried to break her ties with Sky High, but Brody won’t let her walk away—especially now that he knows that Maddie and her twin sister Leena are in big-time trouble. To save Leena, Maddie and Brody must pose as husband and wife, and Maddie is amazed that the man she thought was oblivious to her existence knows her very well indeed. But that’s nothing compared to the way she’s about to get to know him—intimately, in depth, and over and over again…
