Do you remember the first romance book you ever read? I do–I was thirteen and the book was THE ASKING PRICE by Amanda Browning. I picked the book up in the local K-Mart (until that point, I’d been addicted to Christopher Pike horror tales). I read the story quickly, turning those pages at a fast and furious rate. Then I bought another romance. This time, I purchased THE PIRATE by Jayne Ann Krentz. After THE PIRATE, well, there was no going back for me.
I was hooked on romance novels. Hooked on the drama, the tension, the characters, and, of course, the happily-ever-after endings.
My addiction continued through high school. Through college. Through the honeymoon period of my marriage. Over 18 years have passed since I first picked up that old Harlequin Romance, and you know what? I’m still addicted.
What about you? Are you addicted to good romance tales, too? If so, then tell me about the first time you read a romance novel–and let me know what title sparked your romance book cravings.

This topic has re-surfaced again at some of the other blogs I visit, but I never get tired of talking about it. I love talking about romances and my introduction to the genre.
My mom read romances, and being the curious type who loved to read, I had to check them out. Carole Mortimer’s “Burning Obsession” was that book for me. It was a Harlequin Presents with a young, young heroine and an older domineering hero. As politically incorrect as it was (that was the thing back then), I was hooked. I wouldn’t give up the HEA for anything. It never gets old.
I honestly can’t remember the title of the first romance I ever read, but I do know where I got it and who the author was. I was visiting my grandmother and she knew I liked to read and let me rifle through a box of books on her back porch. There were all different kinds of romances and the one whose cover appealed the most to my 12 year old sensibilities belonged to a Barbara Cartland. From there it was LOVE at first “sight”, pardon the pun. *g*
Oh, it had to be Kathleen Woodiwiss and The Flame and the Flower.
I still have my two “starter” books in my Keeper Closet–and yep, I pull ‘em out every now and then just so I can take that nice stroll down memory lane!
The first romance book I read was by Rosemary Rogers.
My first romance novel that I remember the title to is KW’s “A Rose in Winter”. I loved that book and got hooked on historicals for a long time. Now I read everything. But the truth is I was reading my mom’s Harlequin’s back in middle school. LOL
I don’t remember the exact title but it was a Phyllis A. Whitney book. I absolutely loved it and bought all her books and have read every single one of them a couple of times. My next favorite author was Victoria Holt. I read all of her books a couple of times also. Romance, humor and suspense are my favorite things in a novel.
My first romance novel was Prim Rose by Millie Criswell. I picked it up on a whim at my Library’s book sale, not knowing what it was or what it was about. Once I read it there was no going back. lol
The books that really got me hooked on love stories/romance were young adult books about teen love. The next step up was romance.:)
I’ve always been a romantic at heart but didn’t start reading romance until later on (unless you count those good old Sweet Valley High teen novels.) Then my cousin once asked, ‘why don’t you read or write romance?”. My response: Romance? Really? I read/wrote a bit of everything else up until that point. She bought me Joanna Lindsey’s Warrior’s Woman’. I couldn’t put it down. It sure tossed me into the romance world with a bang.
The first romance novel I read was A Knight in Shining Armor. I was eleven when I picked it up. I don’t know if I chose to become a writer before, after, or while I was reading the book.
