I’m having some trouble with internet access and posting. To avoid being kicked offline…and it will happen any second…I’ll keep this brief.
My July release, YOUR MOUTH DRIVES ME CRAZY, is the featured “Red-Hot Read” in the August edition of Cosmopolitan. Wahoo!!!! Yeah, I screamed with excitement for days after finding out. A big thank you to the folks at Cosmo who make these decisions.
Now, from what I can tell Cosmo, features one book as a “Red-Hot Read” each month, including an excerpt of the book. Some months Cosmo also lists a few “Must Read” books as well. What I want to know is if you guys get reading suggestions from magazines. Elle, Entertainment Weekly, Cosmo and a few others feature romance and chick lit with varying frequency. Do you see the recommendations? Do they make an impact? Have you picked up a book from seeing it highlighted in a magazine like this?
Leave a response and when (and if) solid internet access returns to my household, I will pick a winner at random to win a $15.00 Amazon gift certificate.

some i have not, because i read it already lol. but i read cosmo and i have checked out the books they recommend. but i have not checked out elle.
I can’t say that I ever purchased a book based on a magazine excerpt, because I am not much of a magazine reader. Although Redbook, I think it was, excerpted this book from a writer I liked in the past. I decided against buying the book based on the excerpt. I don’t know if this the author’s first attempt at first person POV but I hated it, although the premise of the book was actually quite interesting. And I normally don’t mind first person at all.
Sometimes, I will buy a book highlighted by a magazine or a newspaper; but if I’m good, I check to see if the library has it first. To be honest, I don’t usually look at magazines. I usually pick up books with good recommendations from review sites on the web. To be really honest, even those reviews haven’t worked for me lately. Sigh.
Congrats on the “Red-Hot Read” in the August edition of Cosmopolitan!
I don’t read magazines much (except at the Dr.’s or Dentist offices)
I usually take recommendations from on-line review sites, blogs, etc.
Congrats, on Your Red Hot Read. My copy is sitting on my tbr.
I cant remember if I ever had bought a book due to a magazine ad - I dont think so.
Hope everyone has a great weekend.
Congratulations on the Cosmo “Red-Hot Read”! My sister gets all the magazines and I steal them to read about their take on books.
I have gotten books based on what they have said. ‘Prodigal Summer’ by Barbara Kingsolver is one I most likely would have missed out on if not for the wonderful review.
When I was younger and worked full time I always read Cosmo but that’s been many years. Like a lot of the others I rely on word of mouth, blogs, groups etc. Congratulations though because that’s a great magazine and I’m sure many will read it.
Congratulations on being the “Red-Hot Read” in Cosmo.
Since I don’t read magazines unless I am waiting in an office of some kind, I don’t pick up books from things like this. I go with the seeing it online, blogs, or in the loops I am in. I have Your Mouth Drives Me Crazy sitting by the bed, I hope to get it started tonight.
When I found out Lisa Kleypas Sugar Daddy was featured in Redbook. I went to check out what other books were featured in their column and now I go back every month and see what recommendations they have.
I can’t say I’ve never done it, because I do remember seeing an article about a book in a borrowed copy of a magazine and that it got me to get the book. But I don’t subscribe to magazine like COSMO so it was one of those rare one time things. I rather spend my money on books instead of magazines.
Congrats on getting your book in Cosmo. Yes, I have read the recommendations of books and sometimes do buy from those suggested.
As a subscriber to Entertainment Weekly I always read the new book reviews. Congrats on the Red Hot Read!
Congrats! I can’t say I have bought a book just because of a magazine excerpt..I usually go by recommendations from others like from blogs or friends…
Congrats on the “Red-Hot Read” feature in the August edition of Cosmopolitan! Quite honestly, the only magazine I have made time to read lately is Romantic Times. I just don’t have the time since having my baby girl 9 months ago. It would not influence me however. I have not always agreed with the opinions of the Romantic Times reviewers so I feel this way even more with a magazine like Cosmo. I would rather trust my friend’s opinions. Still it is a nice advertisement for you.
Congratulations on the acheivement. I would be floating on clouds for weeks if it was me.
As for buying books that have been reviewed in magazines, I can’t say that I have read any excerpts out of Cosmo, but I have bought books with good reviews out of People. LOL Just goes to show you how nosey I really am.
Congratulations on the Cosmo feature! The only magazine I read is Romantic Times BOOKreviews and American Cowboy. I don’t read any of the woman’s magazines.
Hi HelenKay!
I’ve bought a book I saw featured in Cosmo before. I read the whole excerpt and it was so good that I had to buy it. So yes, I definetely think it helps to be featured in there and people do buy the book after reading the excerpt!
Congrats! I’ve bought books because of the reviews I’ve read in newspapers, but not magazines.
Hi HelenKay!
Congrats on the review in Cosmo. No, can’t say that I’ve ever picked up a book after reading a review in a magazine but I don’t purchase magazines often. I rely mostly on excerpts I’ve read on an author’s website or blog.
Congrats! That’s one of the sections I turn to first is the book recommendations. But, most of the time when I see books listed, I’ve already read them.
Cosmo is a great magazine and I would be tempted to buy a book based on the review in the magazine. Congrats on your article in Cosmo.
I don’t think I have ever purchased a book on a magazine recommendation. I usually purchase a book based on the blurb and excerpts of a book. I don’t even pay a attention to the reviews for a book. I like to make my own opinion on it. Congrats on the Red-Hot Read!
I don’t read a whole lot of magazines. But if I read an excerpt from a magazine, I don’t see how that would be any different than reading one from the authors website. If it appeals to me then I would definitely jump on reading the book.
I usually purchase a book because I like the blurp or I happen to like the way the author writes. I’ve not read any magazines, so they don’t effect the way I choose a book. I’ve bought a book on a recommendation from a friend which turned out to be a good one.
I don’t read magazines so don’t follow their book reconmendations. I find the internet a much more useful tool to finding good books.
Congrats!! Alas, I don’t read most of any magazines, so I can’t take their recommendations. LOL However, I imagine I might seeing how I do read Astrononmy and Sky and Telescope, and the once in a blue moon times they talk about a book, I tend to put it on my list.
Lois
I don’t read many magazines but during my reading if I happen across a good review, then I definitely take note of it and look for the book.
Congratulations! I am not a big magazine reader so no I don’t get reading recommendations from magazines.
I do read certain magazines which are worthwhile and when they preview a book I enjoy reading the review. But I normally use the internet for that and blogs as well.
