Reading on the Fly

There is never enough time to get everything done! I kept thinking that once the kids got off to college I’d have all this time and freedom and that was sort of true… but then they keep coming back! And bringing laundry and friends and bigger problems that have to be solved.

And then my dh retired so that ate up the time the kids freed up. He retired so that makes me retired, right? Ha! Housework, cooking errand-running didn’t retire and I still have a job. So I’m back to never enough time to get everything done and that includes reading.

I just read a review of the latest Harry Potter book by a reader who said she ran out to Wal-Mart, got the book then sat down for six hours and read it clear though. First to fall I envy her fast reading skills but mostly I covet the six hours she had to read!

I never get six uninterrupted hours to do anything! Am I alone on this? Do you all get nice big blocks of time to read? Or do you steal them somehow. How? Let me know! 

Mostly I grab a half hour here or there, maybe stretch it into an hour but that’s it. I read in bits and pieces, when I can find the time or sneak the time or lock myself in the bathroom. Yep, I’ve even resorted to thet! I wish I commuted to work so I could read there.

So what about you all? When do you get the chance to read? How much time do you get and do you have any little secrets I can use to find more time?

Hugs, Dianne

I read in between writing. I spend that down time inhaling books, actually. As I did this weekend when I devoured Harry in two days.

  2. Cryna Says:

I usually try to block out some time for me to read at night before going to bed, or after I retire to bed, so I can read in bed. But there are days when even this doesn’t pan out.

  3. Susan Says:

I keep what ever book I’m reading with me, that way I can read it even if I only have a few minutes.

  4. Brandy Says:

I snatch time where I can. When I’m making dinner and the pasta is boiling, when the kids aren’t calling “MOMMY” and crawling all over me, but my best time for uninterrupted reading is right before bed.
Good Luck grabbing some time to read.

  5. kim h Says:

    when it is bedtime mostly

  6. catslady Says:

Mostly bedtime here too. Everything else is a bonus. I never complain waiting in offices as long as I can read. I never go anywhere without a book just in case something unexpected comes up.

  7. Dru Says:

I always have a book nearby and will read continously unless I have things to do.

  8. danette Says:

I try to keep a book in the car , a book by my bed and an ebook on the computer, it takes me a while to finish a book but when I have free time I do have a book nearby.*g*

  9. Stacy ~ Says:

I usually read just at home because I’m too distracted by other things to be able to concentrate in public (at the park, at a restaurant, etc) so it’s usually 1/2 hr to an hr before bedtime. Sometimes I’ll have several hours to read, but I can’t imagine sitting down for 6(!) hrs and reading non-stop. Sounds nice though.

  10. Dianne Castell Says:

Looks like we all have busy lives and fit the reading in when we can. One of the up sides at the airport where my flight seems to always be late or the dr. office where that’s that the way it is too.
I need a bigger purse so I stash my books!

  11. Patty L. Says:

I read when I can’t write. This usually occurs when the kids and their friends are running around the house during the day. I also read by the pool, because I can’t see the laptop by the pool (glare). The worst part is though that means I have to write when everyone goes to bed, which means I only get between 4-6 hours of sleep a night.

  12. Michele L. Says:

Yeah I am with the majority here. I read before I go to sleep at night in bed. I am enjoying the Harry Potter book right now. I don’t like to speed read because I like to take in every little detail. I have gone back over the Potter story I am reading right now just to memorize some details or to reread a favorite passage. Also, I like to figure things out for myself as I read a story.

I also have a hard time reading a book in public because I get distracted easily by people and noises. I have to have it quiet in order to read or I can’t concentrate.

  13. Dianne Castell Says:

I hear Harry is wonderful. One of these days I need to read the whole series.

As for needing quiet, that’s the way I write. Lots of authors play music but I play the fan.

That white noise helps me concentrate. And if I read while I’m writing I start to write like that author’s voice. It’s like when I visit Savannah and start talking with a Southern accent.
