Eating and Reading

My two favorite hobbies!

Seems that whenever I read I get a sever case of the munches…which explains my recent affiliation with Weight Watchers. But that’s okay because I can still munch and read, I just have to exchange baby carrots for Fritos and dip or an apple for a Twinkie. Really miss those Twinkies.

So now my snacking is on a short leash, but back in the day of no taboos I found I ate in relationship to what I read.

For example in reading Sandra Brown’s French Silk I think I ate enough chocolate to put Hershey on double shifts to keep up. Then there’s the Stephanie Plum series and I go on my pizza binge and put Dominoes on speed-dial.

When I wrote The O’Fallon series set in Tennessee on the Mississippi River I think we had barbecue twice a week for months. And when I did Texas Bad Boys I went on a health-food binge because the heroine owns a spa.

So, here’s the question… Have you ever gotten cravings…food cravings here LOL…from a book? A movie? (After watching When Harry Met Sally I ate salad in restaurants for weeks!)

What is you fav book-munchie or drink?

I’ll draw a name from the responses for a The Morgue The Merrier Tote and a pack of M&Ms. 

Not when I’m reading, but dear lord do I get the urge for donuts when I’m playing this one game on my computer, Digby’s Donuts. It’s sort of arcade-ish, where you have to (among other things, but most basic) match up same colored donuts to gain tips (points) to move on to the next level. But with all the pictures of the colorful donuts, it drives me nuts!!!! :)

  2. Brandy Says:

When I’m reading I get a craving for dry cereal, like fruit loops, because it’s sweet and I don’t have to look away from the book to grab a handful! I, too, am trying to be more healthy now and am replacing dry cereal with sips from flavored water. We won’t even get started on what I crave when I’m feeling blue!

  3. Maureen Says:

I love to sit in the living room reading and drinking a cup of tea.

  4. Dru Says:

When I’m reading, I like to eat twizzlers because I only need one hand to hold it while the other hand is used to turn the pages.

  5. Stacy S Says:

I usually eat chips & drink Big Red or tea. Unless I’m on a chocolate kick then it’s brownies.

  6. Pat L. Says:

I find eating while reading distracting.

But I do love chocolate and my desserts. Now candy wouldnt be too distracting while reading - after all it is finger food. LOL.

  7. danette Says:

I love snacking while I read,we have the kettle cooked Maui Onion chips that are addicting while reading a good book.

  8. RachaelfromNJ Says:

Reading a culinary mystery definetely makes me crave whatever they are cooking! I’ve craved food while reading Diane Mott Davidson and Karen MacInerney. Usually I end up craving chocolate but banana bread was the last craving I had while reading. I guess chocolate then.

  9. Sue A. Says:

I usually read in bed so I’m not in the habit of munching or drinking when I read. I have a habit of getting immersed in the book so even if I do have a drink made I’ll forget to drink it and it either get cold or warm depending on what I started out with. And after forgoing food inorder to finish the book, I’ll definitely be hungry. I like to gobble chocolate or some baked treat, just to tie me over until I’ve made the missed meal.

  10. Tammy G. Says:

I am usually too much into my book to even think about eating unless it’s around lunch time. Then I will just make me a sandwich or something that is easy to eat while I read. But I will always have a cup of coffee or a bottle of water with me while I’m reading.

  11. Dianne Castell Says:

Oh, Tammy, I know what you mean about getting involved in the story. Sometimes I forget where I really am because I’m so into the book.

I’m writing a Savannah series (Hot and Bothered) and been reading Paula Deen to get the feel of real southern food. First of all I’m amazed anyone in the south lives beyond fifty with all that good eating going on and I think I’ve personally gained ten pounds just reading her recipes. :-)

Anyone up to a trip to Lady and Sons??
    Nothing like Southern cooking!

I love having a hot cup of tea during the winter months. This is my favorite with a social tea biscuit. During the summertime I have to have a cold glass of lemon water.

  13. brownone Says:

For me it’s chocolate…I can sit with a bag of Hershey’s miniatures and eat them while reading until the bag is empty…not good!
I don’t really get cravings when watching movies…only when watching Food Network…

  14. ellie Says:

My ultimate snack is dark chocolate squares which melt in your mouth. Just sublime.

  15. pearl Says:

Licorice always seems appealing, especially red vines. Just love them anytime at all. They go with all the books and seasons.

  16. Dianne Castell Says:

I love licorice too. The black stuff. ‘course then I get black teeth. Every food has it’s problems.

Except cookies. I am the original cookie monster. Now if they can just perfect a no-cal cookie. I think that’s called a veggie.

  17. Karen B Says:

Doritoes - I’ve been known to go through most of a bag when I can’t put the book down - and diet rite raspberry pop. Coffee goes cold so I drink it only when I have a short time to read.

  18. Amy S. Says:

Diet pepsi and butterfinger candy bars.

  19. Teresa W. Says:

I drink Dr. Pepper while eating potatoe chips while I read!

  20. Nicole Says:

My favourite snack depends a lot on both the book and the situation, but my usual drink when I’m reading is tea.

  21. RachaelfromNJ Says:

Speaking of the Food Network… Doesn’t it make you so hungry watching it? Every time there is an episode with barbequing and ribs, I must go out for some ribs right after!

  22. catslady Says:

I too read in bed so no snacking but being on the computer is another thing lol. Black coffee or red wine and dark chocolate are nice.

  23. Dianne Castell Says:

Oh, I am getting some great snack ideas here!
And, yes, the food network is death to any diet. I watch that Italian gal and put on ten pounds from her suggestions. Great food.

I read Under the Tuscan Sun and loved it. It’s not like the movie much but more or a romance with a guy but a romance with Italy and rebabing a villa. And she included recipes and talks about shopping at local markets and all the fresh produce.
Yummy books. And you really want to go to Tuscany!

  24. Theresa N. Says:

Coffee, lots and lots of coffee. But I have noticed if the book talks about food I’m looking for the recipe to try. I’m always so greatful to the authors who include those recipes.

  25. Patty L Says:

I love Mike and Ike candies or Good and Plenty candies while I am reading and also enjoy carrot sticks if I am looking for something more substantial. I don’t drink caffenine so I usually have a glass of ice water.

BTW Dianne after reading your O’Fallon books I took the family out for barbque. They thank you.

  26. Linda Says:

    Hello Dianne,

Everytime I read one of Shirley Jump books I get hungry. Her books have some wonderful recipe’s in it that I so want to try. I will have to try them soon :)

    Great giveaway. Goodluck all.

  27. RobynL Says:

Reading and munching just go together no matter where I read. I love potato chips whilst reading and also Macaroon candies or any baking I have on hand. Lately it’s been Jumbo Raisin cookies I made; they are so soft and delicious.

  28. Michele L. Says:

    Hi Dianne!

How is it going with you? I am having a grand ole time reading your Brava book, Texas Bad Boys! Absolutely love it! Now I usually don’t eat while I am reading. I read at night in bed. If I read during the day it has to be Sunchips! I love them! Especially the original flavor. One time I had a dream that I was eating them. When I got up I went to get some to eat and my husband had finished the bag. Oh man! Well, needless to say that same day, I went to the store and bought me another bag!

I have had other funny cravings also. I went through a Jelly Belly bean phase. Then it is the cherry twizzlers that are bite size. Love them!

Oh and cookies! I have to have cookies! They are my favorite when it comes to sweets. Homemade are the best but there is a store in my town that has a terrific bakery. Jewel is my favorite place to go for fantastic chewy, sofy, cookies.

  29. Cryna Says:

When I am reading, I don’t have too much craving to eat, because I read in bed. Now in front of the computer is totally different. And I don’t think there is a bag of M&M peanuts that I have not liked…..either the little ones bags or the larger bags …….with lots of coffee.

  30. Dianne Castell Says:

    Howdy, all.
I picked Danette’s name from the list (actually out of a box)so she’ll be getting a tote and M&Ms. Now the trick is to get the M&Ms to her without eating them first. :-)

    Thanks, everyone, for taking part!
    See you on the 24th.

    Hugs, Dianne

  31. Brandy Says:

    Congratulations Danette! Enjoy those M&M’s!
