I’m so excited that May is almost here. Make-Believe Mistress will be hitting shelves any day now and I think the book is a lot of fun. I really enjoyed delving into what-if to play with what would happen if someone’s secret fantasies were sudden put on display.
I’m putting the finishing touches on the first book in a series I’m doing for Desire for 2008 called Sons of Privledge. The first book features a Greek tycoon and it has been so much fun to write.

What do you think? Can men and women be friends—just friends?
Way back in the dark ages when I was dating my husband, I worked for the county. A state auditor came in—obviously to audit the county. We set him up in the office next door and somehow, I became his liaison.
Not THAT kind of liaison.
Here’s a dirty secret—everyone hates auditors. Their job is to tell you what you’re doing wrong. Who would like that? So the Powers-That-Be were more than happy to have me dealing with the auditor. Plus, my desk was closer and I had a rudimentary understanding of accounting. (Please don’t hold that against me, it’s just a little quirk!)
So I worked with the auditor. And that experience taught me something—sexual chemistry is real. However he was married, I was dating a guy I really liked, and we kept it on a working-friends level.
But I realized that sexual chemistry is real between the sexes. It’s there whether you want it to be or not, even when you’re not looking and not interested. Not every man and woman who meet has sexual chemistry, in fact I think that’s what makes romances so fascinating. Sexual chemistry is elusive, we really don’t understand it. Why is this woman attracted to that man? Why isn’t that man attracted to her if she’s attracted to him? Why is that two people can meet with little or no chemistry, then six months later, they meet again and suddenly, there’s an explosion from all the chemistry? Many romance novels have been written on a similar scenario!
As an author it’s often just as frustrating with characters. If I don’t get the characters just right, there’s no chemistry, or more accurately not enough chemistry to make the magic of a romance.
But back to friends. Does the fact that sexual chemistry is always lurking between men and women mean that they can’t really be friends, just friends?
I’m not sure myself. I think my answer is that men and women can be friends if they adhere to unwritten rules.
What do you think?
Okay, I’m totally taunting you, because I’m not actually going to post my new cover, because it has a typo in the mock up, so I will wait for that. However I will share the title and the back cover blurb.
Coming in January 2008…
ANY WAY YOU WANT IT
IS THAT A TREBLE CLEF IN YOUR POCKET—
OR ARE YOU JUST GLAD TO SEE ME?
Maggie Gallagher spends her nights with lots of men. Of course, they’re all dead composers, but why nitpick? Her love life is just like the musical compositions she researches—undiscovered. It’s time for Maggie to get loose and go wild. In a dive bar on Bourbon Street, Maggie makes a real find in the house band’s keyboard player. He’s hot. Sexy. Flirtatious. Soulful. And she could swear he’s playing an unknown piece she’s been researching, which is impossible, unless he’s dead…
Centuries before he was a bad-ass vampire with a rock-star wardrobe and Big Easy charm, Ren was Renaldo D’Antoni, a composer on the verge of great success until he was betrayed. No one could ever know that, but tonight, the shy redhead with the big eyes and obviously borrowed outfit actually seemed to recognize his long-lost composition. Now, she wants to know about the composition, and Ren wants to know her…intimately. But what starts as attraction—and distraction—just might lead to the biggest discovery of their lives…
I’m super excited about this book. I really loved writing it, and I love the setting and the subject matter. I was so pleased Kate, my editor, didn’t bat an eyelash when I told her I wanted to write a hero, who is a singer in cover band on Bourbon Street. Especially since we’ve all heard that musicians are one of the romance no-nos. But I guess the fact that he was once a classical composer was a good loophole.
What do you think? Are there any careers that should be avoided in romance?
That sounds awfully philosohical, doesn’t it? But it’s really a question all of us writers keep asking.
I did a signing with some other New Jersey Romance writers on Saturday. It was our first warm sunny day for a while, and the day before the big nor’easter was going to move in. So we didn’t have a lot of traffic.
Which was okay because it gave us time to gossip and catch up, talk about our careers and the future of our writing.
A lot of “stuff” came up in the conversation about where romance writing is going. If vampires had glutted the market, if kick-butt heroines are out or in, if inspirational and erotica are the happening sub genres.
It’s something I don’t think about when I’m buying a book. I just buy what I think I’ll like to read. But I have noticed lately that my bookstore is giving more space to one sub genre or the other. We discussed this for a while, then one of us said, all we ever talk about is where the market is going. What about where we want it to go?
That brought on some lively discussion, I can tell you. We all had our favorite niches, one loved fantasy, of the unicorn and lost world varieties, one loved dark paranormal, I like action adventure, romantic comedy, and another said westerns were the only thing for her.
So many different kinds of romance.
So I thought I’d take a poll. Where would you like to see romance go? Suspense? Inspirational? Historical? Romantic Comedy? Erotica? Paranormal? Old fashioned boy meets girl? Any other venue?
If you could decide, what would you like to see more of on the shelves the next time you go into your favorite bookstore?
I’m almost finished with my WIP, The Greek Tycoon’s Secret Heir which will be the lead title in a new triology I’m doing for Desire next year called Sons of Privledge. But I’m struggling to cross the finish line…which I know is my process at this point in the book.
When I get this close to the end and just seem to slow down on the writing I turn to the internet and start well shopping! My newest find is this cool website called SeeJanework.com.
They have a great collection of really cool desk stuff for women. I love it!!
I’ve also been procrastinating by watching a lot of the Food Network. Last night I made a truly awesome dinner which my family scarfed down.
I think that’s enough procrastination for today, time for me to get back to work…well, after I check out See Jane Work one more time!!

The auction starts in May. Bookmark Brenda’s page, keep checking back and get ready to bid. Last year I won two nights at author Susan Wiggs’ guest cottage and a package from a PR professional – both at far under the cost I would have paid without the auction. Don’t miss out!
Am I the only one who waits until the last minute to file her taxes??? I hope not. But at the same time I hope that all of you are much more organized than I am. I’m much happier living in my fictional worlds writing my books then worrying over writing down all my expensese. So I save them all for the last minute and then have to spend days organizing everything.
