The Great Escape!

Thursday, March 8th, 2007
Karen Kelley Icon

Morning!
I always feel like that character who runs around like a chicken with its head cut off (I grew up on a farm) and says “I’m late, I’m late!”

Karl and I are escaping tomorrow! Our first time to go anywhere in a
l-o-n-g time. We are both so ready to get out of Dodge! Not that we live in Dodge. But if we did, we are so ready to get out.

Since we’re running away, I didn’t want to start another book. This weekend–no laptop. Maybe a notebook just in case. I hate to lose ideas. Speaking of which, Karl came up with the cutest title—which I won’t share because it’s really, really good, and from that I got a story idea. I couldn’t resist and started writing chapter one. Which is okay because I’ll still put it away to send in prior to my next contract.

Are y’all going to the Romantic Times convention next month. Yea, it’s in Houston! Boo, it’s still 9-10 hours away so I’m flying. I love RT, though. And it’s great seeing old friends. And they are so much older than me. I wonder why they’re getting older and I’m staying the same.

Did I mention I’m rooming with Dianne Castell? Have any of y’all met her? I think she forgets to add water to her coffee. No, it’s the truth! She’s like a little bee on speed. I figure rooming with her I should lose at least 10-15 pounds. Don’t tell her I’m over here talking about her. Shhhhh…..

Have y’all checked out the Brava contest on the message boards? That’s how I got my start at Brava. Now I work full-time writing. Cool.

Okay, I’m going to get caught up on some things then go get my hair cut. You have my permission (like that’s worth anything) to have fun today!
Hugs,
Karen Kelley

So Over Slapping…

Wednesday, March 7th, 2007
Jennifer Apodaca Icon

Last year I read two non-Brava books that drove me crazy for a stupid reason—the heroines slapped the heroes. These were contemporary books with supposedly smart heroines who went into rages and started slapping.

Oh grow up.

I grew up with older brothers. I could have hit them and probably gotten away with it, simply because I was much younger and a girl. But I figured out much more devious ways to annoy them. They talked about my antics for years. Once they tried to make me leave a room they were painting and I retaliated by making them laugh so hard they fell off the ladder and into blue paint. (They weren’t hurt, just blue.) Another time, a brother turned off my morning cartoons because he was trying to sleep. When he woke up and looked in the mirror, he screamed until he realized that it was shaving cream on his face.

I was YOUNG when I did these things. But family legend has it that I can be just devious enough to make my siblings cautious about crossing me.

My own three boys came up with truly creative ways to torment each other. I am sure I turned as blue as my paint-splattered brothers many times trying not to laugh.

Slapping has been done. Once it was daring and a little naughty and, frankly, some of the heroes in the past deserved it. But books have evolved and while today’s heroes might be alpha, they are rarely jerks anymore. Shouldn’t our heroines evolve too?

Now when it comes to bad guys, I think slapping is letting them off too easy, but I’m not totally against it!

Having said all this, what do you want to bet that I read a book where the heroine slaps the hero and I love it? That’s the fun thing about books, they have the ability to surprise us!

So what do you all think?

My Big Fat Birthday Present

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007
Donna Kauffman Icon

So, this is the month where I creep one number closer to the big 5-0 (47 and counting, if anyone is keeping score.) Fortunately for me, 47 is the new, oh, 45, so I barely even feel it. Barely. This year, my publisher gave me a nice distraction…they published my latest book this month! Now that’s a great birthday present right there, y’all.

Yes, it’s true, I’ve been around since forever, and have had more than a few books hit the stands, but let me tell you, it never gets old. In fact, it’s still an event, each and every time. Sure, by the time the public sees it, I’ve already held the final product in my hand, as my publisher sends advance copies my way (bless their wonderful hearts.) And yes, tearing open that box and holding my latest baby in my hot little hands, even standing in my own foyer, is an event in and of itself (what, you think I carry the box somewhere before tearing it open? Heck, I make the Fed Ex guy stand there and celebrate with me. He’s such a trooper. Not to mention he makes those blue shorts work. But I digress.)

Still, it’s not really real until I see it gracing an actual bookshelf in an actual bookstore. Hence The Ritual. Aka The Trip. The Viewing. The Big Day.

The entirety of this event includes going to my local bookstore and standing in the romance aisle, scanning the K’s until…yes, wait for it….THERE IT IS! It’s not a dream, it wasn’t some huge scam, no, no, it’s really my book, that I spent what felt like another lifetime writing, right there, out in public, where anyone can see it, and (be still my heart) buy it. Now, the trick is to look like an average, ordinary book shopper. Albeit one who has an enormously goofy grin on her face, but otherwise, the rule is Draw No Attention. Which is why I now go alone on my little First Viewing jaunts. No matter what I say, or how nicely I phrase my desire to keep it private and personal, friends and family just can’t believe that it’s not about telling Every Last Person In The Store that THE AUTHOR is standing Right There. The horror. No, really.

I just want my own little personal moment of vindication. My little moment to nod and realize that yes, once again, I’ve beaten the odds and actually really done this. Okay, so maybe I scoot the other books over, turn mine face out, dust them off a little and make sure they’re displayed properly, but it’s all done quickly and quietly. Then I leave and go treat myself to a smoothie and get back to work. And, oh, about three paragraphs later, I’m convinced it will never happen again. It’s what keeps me going.

Thanks for letting me share my “moment” with you. Shh, don’t tell anyone!

By the way…if you secretly dream of having your own “moment” then check out our Novella Contest on our home page. Maybe I’ll be bumping into you someday. I’ll be the one in the K section. Doing a little rearranging. And smiling. :)

A Little Help

Friday, March 2nd, 2007
HelenKay Dimon Icon

In a few weeks, I’ll be speaking on an author panel at the Valley Center County Library along with fellow Brava author Linda Thomas-Sundstrom and Zebra/Aphrodisia author Leanne Shawler/Celia May Hart. Our topic is: “Everything You’ve Always Wanted to Know About Romance Writing But Were Afraid to Ask.”

Not that I predict lulls in the conversation or fear getting hit with a question that makes me say “ummmm” 60 or 70 times, but what do people really want to know but fear asking? I’ve heard authors give talks about 1000 times…or close to that. For reasons I can’t explain, I can’t think of a single thing I’ve ever asked an author. I’m sure my questions were brilliant and insightful. ::cough:: Actually, my only hope is that they were somewhat coherent.

For the most part, I’m nosy so that my attendance at these author chats are likely a result of that personality defect. For the non-nosy crowd, what kind of stuff do you ask authors? What are you dying to know? Help me out and you have a chance to win a copy of an already released and available 2006 or 2007 Brava title. You pick it and I’ll get it to you.

Books in Translation

Thursday, March 1st, 2007
Gemma Bruce Icon

I just got back from Barcelona. It was a lovely city. The weather was great. The architecture was heavenly. There was nothing gaudy about Antoni Gaudi’s Casa Batllo or the Segrada Familia, his famous unfinished cathedral.

But down on the streets, I was surprised and even more pleased to see romance books at every newspaper kiosk. And not just any romance. The majority were books by American authors translated into Spanish.

Several of the newsstands had wire carousels filled with Harlequin-Silhouettes. Lisa Kleypas’s new book was face forward along with the important newspapers from around the world. Nora and several others were prominently displayed.

I’m not usually a big flag waver, but in this case I sent a heart felt thank-you to all the American romance writers who are spreading love and good will and the chance of happily ever after to people everywhere.

Hooray for Romance.
