To The Movies

This month’s Vanity Fair is the Hollywood issue. On that point, alone, it’s worth a look. Inside, in addition to the actors you’d expect to find, are a few interesting articles. One is on Judith Regan of the infamous now-canceled “confessional” book by the equally infamous O.J. Simpson. That one is…well, long. Apparently there is quite a bit to say about Judith Regan.

There’s also a short story by NYT bestselling author Linda Fairstein about her run-in with Hollywood biggie Harvey Weinstein and her desire to get a movie option on one of her books. In addition to being a significant author, Fairstein was a sex crimes prosecutor in New York for about 30 years and inspired Law & Order, SVU. In other words, she knows what she’s talking about. Fairstein and Weinstein met a few times. Fairstein kept hoping for that option. Then she got an email from someone named Susan on behalf of Harvey Weinstein. Fairstein got excited. She set up a lunch with Harvey Weinstein through Susan. Then, right before the lunch, Fairstein wanted to make sure she had some personal facts on Weinstein correct, including the pronounciation of his name. Susan’s email response said: “Harvey pronounces his name Wein-steen…just like the movie producer.”

Yeah, Fairstein thought she was setting up a lunch with The Harvey Weinstein. Instead, she was setting up a lunch with Harvey Weinstein, 81 years old, and the former tuxedo king of America who was kidnapped in 1993 by an employee and held for ransom. The story is cute and pretty funny. Fairstein’s honesty is refreshing. She ends the story with: “I still don’t have a movie deal, but I spent an afternoon with a genuine hero.” Pretty cool.

This got me thinking - what book would I like to see made into a movie? If I were in charge of The Harvey Weinstein’s lunch calendar, who would you want me to slip in there? One book that instantly popped into my mind was The Givenchy Code by Julie Kenner. it just seems like movie material.

What about you? Give me some thoughts. I’ll randomly select from someone commenting - that person gets a $20 Amazon gift certificate to buy whatever book or movie she wants!

anything book by beverly barton and vicki thompson nerdy books are good. books about the town trouble from, Leslie kelly.

  2. Susan Says:

I’d love to see Jennifer Crusie’s ‘Welcome to Temptation’ and ‘Lake News’ by Barbara Delinsky turned into movies.

  3. Jennifer Y. Says:

I agree that any of Vicki Lewis Thompson’s Nerd books would be good. Or any of Julie Garwood’s Historicals (I know For the Roses was already a movie…it introduced me to romances)…I would love to see a historical romance be made into a movie…especially one of those Highland ones. Also, just about any of the Brava books could be movies. I couldn’t choose just one…I would love to see more films based on romances made…of course there would have to be some edits to some of the stories to get the films by censors

My thing is that I have had this image of the characters from books in my head for so long, I would hate to be disappointed in the final product.

  4. Stacy ~ Says:

“Out of Control” by Suzanne Brockmann. I don’t know why that book popped into my head but Kenny “Wildcard” Carmody just seems like the crazy type of character that would be fun to watch onscreen. Action, adventure, romance, humor, Navy SEALs. My kinda movie….

  5. Maria Duncan Says:

I’d love to see any Susan Lewis novel turned into a movie. I’m a big fan of her books

  6. HelenKay Says:

Good choices. Forgot all about Suzanne Brockmann and didn’t even think of the nerd books, but I can see it. While I love Julie Garwood, I didn’t care for the tv version of ROSES. Still, I think it would be so cool to see a well-done adaptation of a romance novel.

I’m not even sure I know who Susan Lewis is. Off to google…

  7. Patty L. Says:

I would love to see one of Nora Robert’s books turned into a major movie. I know that she has had four t.v. movies this month, but as a fan I know her books are so good and once you have to add in the commericals it takes so much away from the story.

  8. Lois Says:

Teresa Mederios’s Yours Until Dawn, absolutely! :)

    Lois

  9. Aisling Says:

I agree with Patty, I’d love to see any of Nora’s books turned into a big movie. And I can’t wait to get the lifetime movies on dvd

  10. Mary J Says:

I don’t know why none of Enid Blyton’s books have been turned into films. What about The Famous Five or Mallory Towers. They’re what I would like to see on the big screen

  11. Lisa W Says:

    I think I would like Linda Howard’s Sarah’s Child become a movie

  12. Deborah Says:

Any of Judith McNaught’s books would turn out to be great as a movie, I think.

  13. Shuck Ying Says:

I enjoy Cherry Adair’s books with the “T-FLAC” team would make great movies with action, suspense, romance…a bit like 007 movies.

  14. Maria Duncan Says:

Oh Helen, Susan Lewis rocks. She does romantic thrillers so if you like suspense with your love story go find her:)

  15. Maureen Says:

I would pick Cry No More by Linda Howard or any of her other books.

  16. Teresa W. Says:

I would like to see either Christine Feehan or Sherrilyn Kenyon’s vampire books made into a movie. Love vampire movies and both of these authors.

  17. julie Says:

I would love to see Jennifer Crusie’s “Welcome to Temptation” of “Faking It” made into a movie.

  18. Cherie Japp Says:

I would love to see Christine Feehan’s Game series or Jaci Burton’s Surviving Demon Island. Talk about action packed.

  19. Crystal B. Says:

I would love to see Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunter series made into movies.

  20. ellie Says:

My choice would be Always and Forever by Cathy Kelly. It would be a wonderful movie and memorable.

  21. catslady Says:

Am I allowed to say none? I’m afraid I’m usually disappointed when my favorite books are made into movies.

  22. Brandy Says:

What about Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series into a movie? Or Lucy Monroe’s Ready? Both were/ are fantastic.

  23. cathy Says:

I agree with Brandy, I think a Stephanie Plum movie would be a kick, plus Christine Feehan’s Ghostwalker series.

  24. Dru Says:

I would love to see J.D. Robb’s Eve and Roarke or Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum made into a movie. My only disappointment would be the casting if it’s not done right.

  25. Pat L. Says:

How about Jill Marie Landis’ Heartbreak Hotel or Barbara Delinsky’s Three Wishes - a tale of love and redemption by Ms. Delinsky. How can you beat that?

  26. Joyce Says:

Just read Robin D. Owens Protector of the Flight and think it would make a great movie.

  27. Cryna Says:

I would think that one of Lisa Jackson’s murder mysteries would make for a good movie. I also like the idea of Beverly Barton’s Protector series books. Or Alison Ken’t SG-5 series………

  28. Jennifer K. Says:

I’d like to see one of my all-time favorite historicals be turned into a movie. “To Catch a Countess” by Patricia Grasso. I can see it now… and me grabbing for the Klennex box.

  29. Sue A. Says:

I would love to see any book of Linda Howard made into a movie, but with the proviso that she write the screenplay/script. I watched a TV movie based on Linda’s book “Loving Evangeline” and there was a lot lost in the translation from book to film.

  30. Amy S. Says:

I would like to see any of Jennifer Crusie’s books made into a movie. I would also like to see MaryJanice Davidson’s Undead series made into a movie.

  31. Kim Says:

I was going to say Naked in Death by J.D. Robb but the more I thought about it, I don’t want to lose the vision I have in my head of Roarke. What if they were to cast someone who wasn’t as appealing. I’d be so disappointed. lol I think Heather Graham’s Civil War series would make a good TV series.

  32. MD Says:

I’m gonna say Alison Kents SG-5 series or her Girl-Gears, especaiully Indiscreet

  33. Terri Says:

I would like to see any Linda Howard, Suzanne Brockmann and J.D. Robb’s Eve Dallas books made into movies.

I would also like to see L.A. Banks Vampire Huntress books, J.R. Wards Black Dagger Brotherhood, Sherrilyn Kenyon Darkhunter, Jacqueline Carey Kushiel and Robin Owens Heartmate series made into movies.

  34. Theresa N. Says:

I’d like to see Stevi Mittman’s Next series about Teddi Gallo, turned into a movie with Sandra Bullock playing the lead. And if it where a historical romance Elizabeth Boyle’s Something About Emmaline. I can think of lots of books I’d like to see in movie format.

  35. Angie-la Says:

I would love to see Deborah Smith’s “The Crossroads Cafe” made into a movie. That book is just begging for a screenplay! Famous actress horribly disfigured in a car fire, once successful architect emotionally scarred by his wife and young son’s death on 9/11.
The relationship that develops between these two is complex and inspiring. It would make an excellent movie.

  36. Carol M Says:

I loved both the book and the movie of Gone With the Wind. This is the only time I think they did a great job. Normally I like the book a lot more. In the movie they change things and I’m not always happy with the casting.
If done right, I would like anything written by Deborah Smith. I would also like to see any of J. D. Robb’s books but I’m afraid that whoever played Roarke would be a disappointment! lol

  37. RobynL Says:

I would love to see Vicki Lewis Thompson’s Nerd series made into movies; it sure would be good for some laughs which we all need now and then.
Also, Debbie Macomber’s books are so great that I would love to see them into movies.

  38. Cheryl S. Says:

The first thing that popped into my head was any of the romantic suspense books by Debra Webb. I can also see any of the Nerd books being made into a movie.

  39. Kathleen Says:

When I was reading the Givency Code, I thought the same thing. Great movie material!

  40. Lee Says:

I agree about JD Robb’s books, where I would love to see them on the big screen, I can’t picture any actor measuring up to my idea of Roarke. Big fan of Christine Feehan’s Ghostwalker series. Just got thru reading Dangerous Games and think her stories would make a great movie or maybe tv series.

  41. Laurie G Says:

I think Joann Ross’s book “Blaze” (Gage and Tess’s story). Jill Shalvis’s “Blue Flame” ( Callie and Jake’s story). Also love anything by Susanne Carr!

  42. Julia B. Says:

I would love to see J.R. Ward’s books in the big screen. All of them, I love the Black Dagger brother and I think they would be a big success, and the same with any of Suzanne Brockmann’s books. I also can picture Bonnie Vanak’s books with their Egyptian setting, and Blood Moon Over Bengal by Morag McKendrick Pippin that takes place in India.

  43. Christy H. Says:

I would love to see Karin Slaughter’s books made into movies.

I also think Jaci Burton’s Surviving Demon Island would be a fun movie.

  44. HelenKay Says:
