People’s Choice Awards and what have you

Hi Everyone!
So, did y’all watch The People’s Choice Awards last night? I missed the first part because I was in the “zone” writing. I refuse to leave the “zone” because it doesn’t come as often as I’d like. Plus, I didn’t realize it was on.

Why wasn’t Johnny Depp in the running for favorite leading man? That’s all I want to know. He can put his gold teeth in a cup beside my bed any night. Be still my beating heart. Well, I don’t actually want it to be still. If it were still then I’d be dead. I’m not ready for dead.

Make a comment today and I’ll put you in a drawing for an ARC of my April 2007 release Close Encounters of the Sexy Kind. Woo-hoo! I don’t even care if you watched the People’s Choice Awards. You can talk about Johnny Depp if you want, New Years resolutions—I have an apple pie in the freezer I was going to take to my son’s house and didn’t. Ugh, temptation. I’ve only had one slip so far. White powdered doughnuts. I looked like a crazed woman as I shoved them into my mouth. They were so worth it and I got back on the wagon the next morning.

Okay, I’m off to find the “zone”.

Hugs,
Karen Kelley

A New Page

New beginnings. Aren’t they just the coolest?

There’s a line of dialogue in the movie Forrest Gump that rings so true to me. It’s in the scene where Forrest and Lt. Dan are celebrating the new year, ringing in 1972 (I think it’s ’72). Anyway, they’re in a bar and two of Lt. Dan’s lady friends join them. One of the women says to Forrest, “Don’t you just love New Year’s? Everybody gets a second chance.”

That’s how I view the New Year. A new beginning. A second chance to start over. An opportunity to tweak whatever it is I might have done wrong the first time. A second chance to make things better. The new year is the ultimate rewrite. A whole new page to be written on, so to speak.

I decided many years ago to stop making resolutions because I just never seemed to keep them. It always seemed that by January 5th I was already making excuses not to go to the gym before work, then before I knew it, I was adding an extra bag of cookies or Doritos to the grocery cart. Instead, I learned to set goals for the new year. I spend some time on the last day of the year looking over the goals I’d made that year. I do a little reflecting. Most times I’m able to give myself a little “atta-girl” pat on the back for accomplishing goals. Sometimes there are one or two goals that might require tweaking for the new year and I’m allowed an opportunity for a do-over. A chance to do things better.

So here’s my question for you today. What are you hoping to do-over, do better or just DO on your new page?

Reading Together

Sylvia Day Icon

I’ve lost a lot of reading time this last year due to writing commitments and I miss it. A lot. I was sitting here tonight trying to think of how I can fit reading back into my life, because really, writers have to read. It’s what makes us tick — our love of reading.

So then I came over here to post my bi-monthly blog post and an idea hit me. What if we do a Brava Book Club here on the blog? We’ll pick one Brava release, read it, then check in two weeks later when I come back to blog. Every time I blog I’ll pick one participant to win a copy of the book we’re talking about next time. I’ll ship the book to the winner via Priority Mail, affording plenty of time to read the book before the next blog.

It would be totally informal and (hopefully!) a lot of fun. When we check in, we could answer the following questions:

Favorite line

Favorite scene

SD Book ClubSimple, right? Are you game? If so, we can start this week by picking a book. I’ll be back to blog on Monday, January 22 and we can weigh in on it then. I can also set up a little reminder email. Would you be interested in participating?

Fans, It’s All About YOU!

My sister-in-law called me last night, totally jazzed because I’d sent her a signed book. I mean, she was THIRLLED. She wasn’t my sister-in-law anymore, who has known me since I was fifteen years old, she was a fan.

I was humbled. Truly. In that moment, all the stress and pressure cleared and I remember what I write books for—the readers. Because first and foremost I’m a reader too. I love books, I speak the language of books. If I meet a stranger and we’ve read the same book—we have an instant connection.

Probably one of the things that surprised me as an author is all the things that are out of our control. Pressure often builds to promote, to get reviews, to connect with book buyers for the large chains; to…the list is endless. And it can make you crazy.

It can make us forget why we write. And who is really important.

Not the reviewers, not the book buyers for the stores, not the media. Sure they all have their place in the process. But it’s the FANS that are important. The readers. All those other people, the reviewers, the buyers—they are all doing it for the fans too. Buyers for the big stores and bookstores want to pick the books that readers love and will snatch off the shelves in record time. They all want to please the fans.

So last night when my sister-in-law called, telling me about her life with all the normal daily stresses and then how much the book brightened her day—it just slammed home to me. I do this for the fans. It’s all about YOU.

And, of course, I have to add that Brava Fans Rock!

Contest Time

Wednesday, January 3rd, 2007

We’ve passed into 2007. Happy New Year to all of you and thanks for continuing to stop by and give us your support!! We appreciate it more than you know.

This seems like a good time to chat about contests. More specifically, to remind everyone about the contest opportunities you may be missing here on the Brava website. The contests you sometimes see on this blog are only part of the story. There are two other parts. First, each month we host a contest. Just click on the Contest link on the toolbar. You answer a few questions and…ta-da…are entered to win two free Brava titles. It’s that easy. Second, at random times we hold Author Spotlight contests on the Message Board. Again, you have to answer a few questions, but the prizes are pretty great. So far Brava authors Amy Fetzer, Dianne Castell, Diane Whiteside and now Jamie Denton have generously donated prizes for you to win.

Now, most of you probably know all of that. Here’s the part you might not know (and what my fellow authors don’t know I’m disclosing to you): no one makes the authors donate the prizes. They do it as a thank you to the Brava readers and as a way of introducing Brava titles to new readers. More stuff you don’t know (and they don’t brag about): the authors also step up and donate books to worthy causes. Really, I’m proud to know these ladies.

And me, well, I have the fun job in this process. I get to collect the prizes and stash them in my home until I send them out to the winners. That means I get a sneak peek at upcoming covers and new titles [rubbing hands in glee]. You can almost hear my maniacal laugh, can’t you?

So, in case you didn’t know before, you now know you have numerous opportunities to win books and promo items on the Brava website. My question is this: is this the type of stuff you want to win? What do you guys like to see as prizes…yeah, I’m assuming you guys like prizes. I know I do. Give us some ideas. As a thank you, I’ll pick a name at random from those commenting. That person will win a few covers of upcoming releases and some promo goodies. And, don’t forget to stop by the Message Board and enter Jamie Denton’s Author Spotlight Contest. She’s giving away signed copies of her most recent Brava release, The Matchmaker.

Best wishes to all in 2007!

It’s that time again

Tuesday, January 2nd, 2007

I’m not good at making resolutions. I know how hard it is to keep them.

But when you’ve uncorked the champagne, watched the ball drop in Times Square, even if it is only on television, and herded everyone onto the porch to watch fireworks over the Hudson River, you think, Wow. I can do it. Start the new year with a clean slate. And while I’m at it, I’ll use fireworks in my next love scene.

But this year I decided to make a resolution I can keep. And in the tradition of KISS (Keep it simple stupid) I only made one. A very logical one that didn’t include not eating chocolate, or cleaning house when I’m on deadline.

Here’s my resolution. I will sit down to my computer and approach writing in a calm and professional way. I’ll still let myself drop tears over my heroine’s broken heart. I’ll laugh at my hero’s stupid jokes. But I will not—will not—FREAK OUT over the progress of my story. Will not PANIC over deadlines.

Anybody else already broken your New Year’s Resolution?

Here’s how I did. I love my new story and my new characters. J.T. is a young female sportswriter doing a human interest story on a minor league baseball team. Tommy’s a major league pitcher whose career is shorten by an injury. He’s come home to open a community sports center for low income kids.

I love them both. I even love the story. And that doesn’t always happen right away.
They’re both admirable, honest, lovable people. They find each other attractive. They’re interested in each other. I know they’re going to live happily ever after—eventually. But it’s page 94 and they haven’t even kissed.
I’ve been pushing them at each other for days, and yesterday, less than twenty four hours after my resolution, I lost it.

I yelled at them. “What’s wrong with you people? This is A Brava book. Kiss her already. I swear the two of them looked out of that computer screen and said, “Mind your own business, we’re getting to it.”

“But you are my business!”

I didn’t hear their answer to that because at that point my daughter stuck her head in my office door and said, “Are you calling me?”

Oops. I realized not only that J.T. and Tommy were right, but that I had made another resolution that was impossible to keep.

Life isn’t about always staying aloof and logical and trying to orchestrate events to suit yourself. Sometimes you have to jump in with both feet, embrace life with everything you’ve got, laugh and cry and even yell a little, maybe take that road less traveled.

So I have to say to J.T. and Tommy. Thanks guys. I’ll hang in there and see if you get to that kiss on your own or whether I might just have to give you a push.

Anybody else make a resolution that you couldn’t—maybe shouldn’t — keep. Better still, did anyone make a resolution they could keep?
