It’s back! American Idol that is, and I’m a serious Idol junkie. As a rule, if I’m sittin’, I’m knittin’, but I’m so addicted to Idol that I won’t even break out the needles to work on the current knitting project while I’m watching the show. The only other shows that receive that high honor are Rome, Desperate Housewives and Grey’s Anatomy.
Right now we’re in the first round of auditions. This is the part of the show where the judges travel to various cities throughout the U.S. and must endure endless hours of bad auditions in hopes of finding the next American Idol. People turn out in the tens of thousands for their chance at stardom. It’s a phenomenon.
For as much as I enjoy the show, it can be painful to watch. Kinda like a train wreck waiting to happen and you just can’t look away. So many of those auditioning are truly horrible. Delusional, even, and a few I’d bet are even mentally disturbed. You have to wonder why some of these folks even think they have a snowball’s chance of making it to the next round. The judges aren’t kind, either, and as mean as Simon can be, 99.99999% of the time I do agree with his assessments.
Are you an Idol junkie? What is it about the show that attracts you? Or if you’re not a fan, why not? And just for fun, I’ll be doing a random drawing for a free book and a Jamie Denton coffee mug, so be sure to check back tomorrow morning to see if you’re a winner!
UPDATE: Congratulations to alissa, winner of the random drawing. Alissa, send me your snail mail addy and I’ll get your prize out to you right away. Well, just as soon as this winter storm passes, that is.

I like the show because it gives ordinary people the chance to attain their dreams. This beginning part with the auditions seems harsh to me at times.
We don’t watch it, just don’t have the time. But I did hear a Carrie Underwood song on the radio the other day and thought ” That lady can sing!”. It’s my understanding her big break came from American Ideal. So I feel like I’m missing out on a good thing.
I like watching American Idol. I think the show gives people the chance to pursue a dream. I think the judges are quite harsh at times but the people who go to audition are aware of how the judges are if they have watched past seasons of the show.
I watch when they get into the top 10 singers. I feel sorry for those people who can’t sing during the auditions but think they do sing well.
I don’t know if some of those people during the auditions just want their 5 minutes of fame because some of them are so horrible there is no way that they don’t know they are just bad.
I watch the show sometimes just to see who are the favorites.
Oh I’m a fanatic! I love the beginning auditions - the show has been on long enough for everyone to know what’s going to happen, so I say they take their chances. Plus, have you read music critics reviews? I say if they can’t make it past these judges (in that if their criticisms keep them from pursuing their dreams) then they don’t belong in the business because they’ll never make it past a bad review.
I’m so fanatical that I’ll tape it while I’m watching it just in case the phone rings (as it did last night).
I love this show, I just think it’s a great way to see how the music industry works.
This show is interesting since it can demonstrate the talent that is out there. Many talented individuals never have that opportunity and this allows them to be seen. Perhaps through this avenue others will see them and their chance for becoming known will happen.
I don’t watch any reality tv at all. Just don’t have the time with a 3 month old baby girl and a 3 1/2 year old boy. What little time I get for myself I spend reading and on the computer. That is my escape time.
Hi Jamie, I only watch when they get down to the final ten. I think that most of the people that try out are just trying to get their 5 minutes of fame and I refuse to be a part of it. Don’t get me wrong if my daughter is watching I will peek and laugh at the horrible people. But come to the final tne and you can’t pull me away from the t.v.
I don’t watch much of the audition part of AI, it is just to brutal. When they get to Hollywood I start watching more regularly. Then when the competition begins I’m hooked. The best part is watching them grow as singers from week to week.
There are thousands of extremely talented people whose chance to perform never takes place. When they are onstage in front of millions of people their luck can change and their chance of a lifetime to become someone is possible. They can be discovered instead of being lost. That will totally change their future and be a blessing to them.
I love American Idol, but not necessarily the audition shows. I would rather listen to the good singers than watch them deliberately put the bad singers on for ratings. I have been watching them this year though because not much else has been on. I am very much looking forward to the actual competition.
I discovered American Idol about 1/2 way thru season one and have been a fan since (although I’ve only voted once…the season 2 finale). I’m not sure what attracts me. For the actual competition, I think it has to do with the singers growing and meeting the new challenges of each week (and sometimes watching them crash and burn). As for the audition stage, it’s a freak show. I wish they would show more of the people that actually make it to the next round instead of showing stories about people who don’t have a chance. It’s a waste of our time.
I’m not a fan of reality tv and I don’t watch it. I did, however, see a few of the people that didn’t have a chance and I think it’s terrible the way they were treated!
I don’t watch the auditions - you get to see/hear enough of in the news, on the radio, TV and internet. I just cringe when the truly bad singers are on but they know what they’re getting into. The judges comments can really hurt but should NEVER, EVER have anything to do with one’s appearance - that is just plain cruel and unforgivable. Perhaps I’d watch if they’d show more of those who go on to the next step.
I enjoy watching this show because it is pure entertainment and fun. Sometimes you can judge that some of the people will get far if they have a chance, by being visible. This show definitely gives them a chance to show their abilities and hopefully boost them further ahead.
I LOVE the auditions, Simon pulls no punches and says exactly what everyone is thinking(in slightly meaner terms though)
Alas, I’m the one person in the universe who doesn’t watch it, nor do I have the urge to watch it. But I’m like that with many shows, many reality shows in particular not because I have a thing against reality shows, I just never saw one that ever caught my curiosity enough. Besides, something like American Idol gets enough coverage on the news stations that it sometimes feels like I have watched it! LOL

I like the last portion of the show when they’ve selected their top ten. And I really don’t care for the judges anymore. I just want to see the performances.
If I do watch this show, it is only towards the end when the ones deserving of the honor perform in order to win and become stars.
I am an American Idol fan. I don;t really care for the audition part though, I like it when they get to the top 16 or so and actually start the competition. I wish Katherine would have won over Taylor last year. I also think Chris Daughtry is great. Way to go Jennifer Hudson, hope you win an oscar for Dreamgirls!
I think this is a great show, especially when they find an extraordinary talent
all the different is good to see and the bad and and good singers. they have guts to go there. it is fun
I will watch the show but I am not a junkie. I will have the show onbut will be multi-tasking something else:smile:
I don’t watch the show all the time, but I do pay more attention to it when it is getting down to the finals…….I am not much of a TV watcher………..
I have a 12 year old that loves to sing. So yes I tune in Idol when I can and the kid insists she will not survive unless she watches it. I too, like the top 10
This show is an interesting concept which allows so many ambitious and talented people to attain their wishes. That is great! I watch when the finals are on.
I don’t watch it or any reality show, becuase I don’t want to commit to them. I feel if you miss one or two, then you’re lost for the rest of the season.
I have seen the show but I usually watch when it is the finals.
Not big on the show. I feel bad for the ones that get mocked, some should expect it but I’m sure there are others that really do think they are good. I think they have had some good winners but a few not so good.
Hi.
I never have watched the show. Watched the one girl sing tonite tho as I was flipping channels. She was the one who admitted she couldnt sing and wanted them to teach her.
Dancing With the Stars and Survivor are my shows and next Fri going to see DWTS on tour. Cant wait.
Am not one bit impressed with Simon and how he tells the contestants how he feels about their effort. It is a great chance for people who aspire to sing.
This is the first season that I have watched. Last week I thought they were a little rough on the contestants. I felt sorry for them. This week they didn’t seem as mean. I think I will enjoy it more after they have selected everyone. Oh, and Simon, he’s pretty much everything I dislike in a man. lol
I’ve limited myself to one reality show (survivor) only because I get so addicted and get crazy if I miss an episode. It’s hard to have a life when you’re hooked to the TV. I must admit I do watch the entertainment shows that give the highlights and that’s usually enough until it gets to the end and then sometimes I watch (did that with Dancing with the Stars). I really think idol is getting a little over the top with their meaness. I really feel sorry for some of those poor people.
I’ve never watched the show. We don’t get any channels, so we just buy DVD’s. I spend more of my time reading romance than I do watching or rewatching the DVD’s we have.
I don’t really atch reality shows, unless you count Dancing With the Stars as Reality TV!
I’m more of a Grey’s Anatomy, Men In Trees, House, and Boston Legal addict!
And *gasp!* I have never seen American Idol!
