Not the Christmas variety but the TV variety. I really like this show, least I did.
Ann Heche has a great delivery, the stories are captivating, Ben’s the hunk of hunks as are several of the other men onboard. But… two weeks ago one of the characters was reading a romance book and it was referred to as her dirty little secret.
What! I was so mad my hair fried. There’s a blog at the Men in Trees website and I posted my displeasure, actually I was plain pissed.
Did anyone else see the episode? Was anyone else mad? I bet the writer of that series never read a romance in his/her life!
I get this from time to time, how I write smut or dirty little books. The comment catches me completely off guard and I don’t know what to say. Sooo, what I’ve done is practice a response. While I’m brushing my teeth I rehearse my comeback, “If you don’t know the difference between smut and romance I feel sorry for your husband/wife.” Maybe the next time I’ll be ready!
So, my question is. Did those of you who saw the episode get angry as I did? And what do you say when you get hit with the smut comment? Got any more suggestions for me?

I saw it and couldn’t believe it. To refer to romance as smut? Ugh. Um, sorry to say, I still like the show, I just don’t like they handled the agents “dirty little secret”.

I didn’t see the episode, sorry! Although, I am an avid fan of romance books. I don’t call them smut. They are called, “Romance Novels”. Thank you very much! Not all romance novels are expicit. Some are very tasteful in there pictoral of sexual scenes. So what is everybody getting so riled up about?
Comebacks:
“They say love makes the world go ’round, but really, it’s smut.”
“Yes, writing smut is a terrible job, but someone has to rake in all that profit.”
“Why, yes, I DO write smut. Thank you SO much for asking…” (Said with a dreamy smile)
And of course, there’s the sweet/snotty answering their rude query with a question of your own that demeans their career path, such as:
“Do you chase ambulances?” (lawyer)
“Do you count beans?” (accountant)
“Are you a quack?” (doctor)
Seriously, though, have pity on those poor souls who never left the playground, and can’t think of anything more imaginative to ask you.

The real trouble is their comment always blindsides me.
That’s why I need to practice replies.
LOL, love the comeback comments. It’s really aggravating that a show millions of people watch, a “romantic” show, one about relationships and love, calls romance novels “dirty litle secrets”. How ironic that the very element that makes the show so popular is one they diss as something shameful…go figure.
The only comment I have to add is that you could say it’s a common fact that women who read romances have more satisfying marriages
I agree, Stacy. Men in Trees is built on romance, it’s the whole theme and then they knock a romance book. Makes no sense. Would have been so much more fun if they embraced the idea. Would have rung a lot truer with the story line.

I love all the comeback comments, and feel that anyone who calls romance books smut, really has no idea of what romance is all about. Unfortunately, I don’t watch much TV so cannot offer an opinion on what took place on the show Men In Trees.
I am just thankful that the Authors write what they do, so that we the readers can enjoy……Thank you.
Thanks, Cryna. I think that people who attack romance books have never read one. Or they have no idea what romance and a relationshiop is all about. Poor people.
