Romance Novels–Dangerously Addictive!

The first romance novel I remember reading was SWEET SAVAGE LOVE by Rosemary Rogers. My sister gave the book to me when I was fourteen. Totally inappropriate for that age, and of course I was hooked. I cut my teeth reading Nancy Drew and the various dog books like BIG RED and OID YELLER, but it wasn’t until my sister loaned me SWEET SAVAGE LOVE that I became addicted to reading.

Clearly all that romance reading corrupted me. Let me count the ways:

1) I’ve been happily married for 24 years.
2) I’ve never been arrested.
3) I haven’t appeared in any adult type films (that I know of!).
4) I stunned the heck out of my high school English teachers when I scored really high on those annoying tests in reading comprehension and critical thinking.
5) I read across all genres.
6) I read Harry Potter ONLY because it was being banned all over the place, and I LOVED IT.
7) I write books with—gasp—sex scenes.

Okay perhaps I’m more boring than morally bankrupt! What about you all? What was the first romance novel you read?

I picked up a Romance novel by mistake during my libraries anual used book sale…It was Prim Rose by Millie Criswell and to this day it is my favorite romance novel. The first one is always the best!

My very first romance novel (aside from Sweet Valley High and such) was The Ring by Danielle Steel. I was a Danielle Steel fan for many years and became even more enamored with romances the more I read.

  5. Jennifer Y. Says:

Not including the classics, For the Roses by Julie Garwood was the first romance I ever read.

  6. Jennifer Apodaca Says:

This is fun to see the “firsts” for you all! Keep them coming!

  7. Estella Says:

I cannot remember the name, but it was by Barbara Cartland.

  8. Kate Carlisle Says:

Hi Jen! The first romance I ever read was The Lion’s Lady by Julie Garwood. A friend gave it to me because she saw me reading Jane Austen and she figured Julie Garwood might be just the thing for me. She was so right. Now I’m corrupted and addicted and I’ve never been arrested, either!

  9. Dru Ann Says:

My first romance book was by Rosemary Rogers.

  10. Michele L. Says:

My first ever was a book by Phyllis A. Whitney. I can’t remember the title but it hooked me good! Then, I started reading Victoria Holt novels. From then on there was no stopping me.

  11. Pat L. Says:

I too was hooked on Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden, Beezus and Ramona, Little House on the Prairie books.

I guess my first romance book must have been a Danielle Steele or Sandra Brown. And the rest is history.

  12. Jennifer Apodaca Says:

THE LION’S LADY is still one of my favorites!

I love reading all of these!

My first romance book was read while in high school… pretty sure it was a Danielle Steel book. But, it didn’t hook me to the genre. Jump about 10 years later, I picked up “Hot Rain” by Kat Martin and that’s the book that changed my reading habits (was strictly a mystery/thriller reader… not anymore).

  14. Kris Says:

My very first adult romance was So Worthy my Love by Kathleen Woodiwiss, I was 15/16. I was reading mostly fantasy at that point so I did not really get back into romance until about 8 years later when I started reading Johanna Lindsay, I have been reading lots of romance ever since.

  15. Callen Says:

If I remember correctly, it was most likely a Victoria Holt - (don’t remember the exact book.) I got hooked early on gothic romances by Holt, Mary Stewart and Phyllis A. Whitney.

Well my first true love story was A voice in the wind by Francine Rivers. Im only 16 now so this was about 3 years ago. I’ve read many love stories but that was the first one that had me hooked. I now read twilight and im obsessed…. looks like im damamged for good now
