Give me my pop culture fix, please

Here’s the thing. I’m a writer. A romance writer, mostly. But I’m also a pop culture slut. I can’t help myself. I inhale TV shows, magazines, movies . . . Think I’m kidding? My magazine subscriptions are to People, US Weekly, and Entertainment Weekly. Oh and TV Guide. I’d die without my TV Guide.

Once the mail carrier forgot to close my mailbox and it filled with snow on top of the new edition, and I nearly cried.

At least it wasn’t the Fall TV edition, which arrived last week, and demanded a celebration. I ate a box of cookies in its honor. I’m currently glued to Nip/Tuck, House, and that new show that follows House . . . Standoff. Also caught and loved Men In Trees, Gray’s Anatomy, Two and A Half Men, How I Met Your Mother, and . . . well, so many more I can’t even remember off the top of my head. Oh and Survivor is back, YAY, and an interesting social experiment to boot this time by dividing the troops into very unpolitically correct groups. And then there’s Amazing Race (love you, Phil).

How do I incorporate my addictions into my writing? Not sure, other than like my TV habits, I don’t take myself, or my writing, too seriously (as evidenced by my own daily blog) For instance, I don’t write literary fiction. Never going to be an Oprah bookclub selection, I’m afraid. Nope, I need a happy ending in my TV shows, and I need a happy ending in my books.

So how about you? Favorite shows? And do you read along the same lines as what you’re watching? And like me, do you need your “fix”, aka the happily ever after? Inquiring minds want to know!

    Jill,

I love Two and A Half Men. It’s just too funny. Will not miss Rescue Me and just got got hooked on Nip/Tuck. Like you, I need my happily ever after.
Going back to bed since it’s 3:30 in the morning. I guess that means I must be hooked on your blog as well as my favorite shows to be on here in the middle of the night:-)

  2. Stacy ~ Says:

Okay, I don’t really watch t.v. Weird, I know, but I find I wasn’t doing much of anything else. I remember loving Nip/Tuck and the original CSI, but I’ve never watched Grey’s Anatomy or some of the other popular shows. I’m such an outsider.

  3. Bailey Stewart Says:

Oh God, I need coffee. She’s making me think! Later chick - just wanted you to know I stopped by, and I want to answer so will try to come back later.

  4. Kate Duffy Says:

    Morning, Jill,

HOUSE, Grey’s Anatomy, America’s Next Top Model, Dancing With The Stars, and I am in a countdown for the Oct. 4th return of LOST. And when in doubt, like for most of the summer, anything on the Food Network and reruns of Law & Order. And The Red Sox whenever I can catch them here in Yankeeland.

    Kate

  5. Pat L. Says:

Hi, Jill - How ya doing?

For those of you who dont read her blog - it is a hoot. The adventures of her family, give me many a chuckle.

As for t.v. programs; I try not to watch too many or then I dont have time to read. But my absolute fav. is Dancing With the Stars. Great competition - exccept for Harry and Jerry. Love Joey, Mario, Emmett and Viveca. They are all really great.

Survivor is back, sometimes I will watch situation comedies, Lost, Cold Case, Missing.

  6. Nicole Says:

I love House. it’s definitely a must-watch. I also have started watching Standoff, but so far it hasn’t really kept my attention. I also love watching What Not to Wear, Bones, and Mythbusters.

  7. Danny Says:

    Hi Jill,

I don’t watch so much TV, but I like CSI and Law & Order.

  8. Angie-la Says:

There are only a few shows that are must watch TV for me. Not that I don’t watch more, ya know..but the only ones I try never to miss are Lost, Grey’s Anatomy, Boston Legal, and Dancing With the Stars. I like Desperate Housewives, but don’t stress too badly if I forget to watch it.
I also love to watch Take Home Chef, and any cooking show with Rachel Ray, Alton Brown or Paula Deen. And I love movies. I have been known to read the occasional People or Us magazine. My head is filled with all this useless pop culture trivia, but I am fun at parties. I always have something talk about.

  9. Jill Says:

I can’t believe I forgot to mention Dancing With The Stars, which I LOVE. And am anxiously awaiting Lost . . .

  10. Christa Says:

I don’t watch a lot of tv. Now that the fall season has started, there are more shows that I like to was. I loved Men in Trees and Justice. I always liked ER and the new show Shark was on. I wanted to check that out. If they want these new shows to last why do they put them up against fan favourites?

  11. Kimberly Says:

I am a HUGE T.V. Addict. Watched Grey’s last night and was crying within the first ten minutes. Hubby rolled his eyes and went to play his guitar, lol.

I also love The O.C., Desperate Housewives, One Tree Hill…thank goodness for Tivo. I’ve promised myself I wouldn’t watch any of the new shows, so as not to add to my addiction, lol

  12. Gail Says:

Survivor turned out to be kind of dull last night . . .

  13. Dennie ~ Says:

I Love Ghost Whisperer and Numbers… I will usually go in my room to watch alone - don’t need the kids comments - and dh and I fell in love w/ The Office

  14. Jennifer K. Says:

I don’t watch a lot of TV… although it’s almost always on for some background noise (I hate silence). Some of my favorite shows are Dancing with the Stars, Amazing Race, Lost, Iron Chef America and American Idol. I miss the days of the strong family sit-com. I’ve not found any of the ones currently on TV to be to my taste.

I’ve got a pile of magazines sitting on the floor next to my desk… Entertainment Weekly, People, Lucky, Style and TV Guide (which I hate the new format… and have let my subscription slide).

And yes, I really do need an ultimate happy ending.

  15. Susan Says:

You already know I’m addicted to Nip/Tuck! I love all three CSI’S, NCIS, Survivor and Amazing Race to name just a few. I enjoyed both Smith and Shark!

  16. Julie S Says:

Yep. TV. Love it. Can’t seem to get enough of it. During this time of year, my “reading for pleasure” tends to get relegated to commercial breaks.

I was SO stoked for the season premiere of THE OFFICE last night. I think that’s my all time favorite sitcom, and it didn’t disappoint. And Survivor delivered, by providing the single-most shocking tribal council moment. EVER.

  17. Dru Ann Says:

I love TV and I like all my shows to have a a happily ever after ending as well as in the books that I read. September is my favorite time of the year to see my favorites shows L&O CI, CSI, Bones, Criminal Mind, CSI NY, Cold Case, Without A Trace, Two And A Half Men return with new episodes.

  18. Fannie Says:

I love happy endings. My favorite TV shows are all three CSI’s, Cold Case, Without a Trace, Numbers, Criminal Minds,Ghost Whisperer, Close to Home(Harm from JAG is on it this year), Cooking with Paula and Iron Chef America. I know I spend too much time in front of the TV but that’s about all I can do right now:roll: and also read. Have a great day and Hugs to all.

  19. Christy Says:

I’m the same way as Jennifer K. ~ I don’t watch a lot of TV, but it’s almost always on for some background noise.
I do enjoy watching C.S.I., Dr. 90210, and What Not to Wear.

  20. Jill Shalvis Says:

Stop the presses. Harm from JAG is on Close To Home and I’ve been missing him? That will have to be rectified immediately.

And I love CSI, the original. I even love the gore. Not sure what that says about me . . .

  21. Amy S. Says:

Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and Dancing with the Stars.

  22. Marie Says:

Amazing Race is one of my favorites. I also can’t enough of The Office, Survivor, Desperate Housewives, America’s Next Top Model & Bones (hot David!)

  23. Maureen Says:

I find that the shows I like are on at times that I can’t always watch them. For some reason I keep forgetting to have my son record these shows even though he knows how to do it and has offered several times.

  24. Estella Says:

Don’t watch much tv. I do need my happily ever after in books.

  25. Donna Kauffman Says:

Well, it goes without saying (though I have reams of blog space saying it anyway) that I am Jill’s twin when it comes to television slutdom. Of course, the reality division of my promiscuity is all Jill’s fault anyway. She’s the one who got me hooked on Amazing Race and it was a slippery slope from there.

Where to begin? My current TiFaux menu has Dancing w the Stars, Survivor, Amazing Phil-er Race, Boston Legal, Men in Trees, Project Runway (Hi Tim!!!!) Desperate Housewives, Extreme Home Makeover, and add to that Six Degrees AND yes, I’ve officially caved to peer pressure, as of this week I’m on season one of Grey’s Anatomy so I can catch up and be relevant with everyone I know. And damn them, they were right! I love it. Sigh.

  26. Lis Says:

Favorites of the returning shows so far, 2 and a half men, amazing race. Looking forward to the new desperate housewives this weekend.

  27. Donna Kauffman Says:

Oh yeah, and when is Las Vegas coming back??? And it’ll be American Idol time soon, too. Oh sure, I saaaaaay I won’t get hooked this time. But I know me. I have no will power.

  28. Bailey Stewart Says:

And Donna has the greatest reality day-after wrap ups I’ve ever read - just hysterical!

Unfortunately, I’ve had to cut back on my TV watching - but I don’t miss Dancing With the Stars, American Idol, CSI (original), Ghost Whisperer, Numbers, House, any entertainment awards show (except music), Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Cold Case, Criminal Minds, a probably a couple more that I’ve forgotten at the moment. Although I write romantic comedies, there doesn’t seem to be a comedy in the bunch. I haven’t been able to get in to any of the new shows. Tried Justice, Standoff (I’m giving it one more try) and Jericho (haven’t watched it yet). I want the HEA.

I quit taking the TV Guide (first time in this household in over 30 years) because I hate the new format (if I wanted People magazine stapled over my Sunday newspaper clippings I’d do it myself), but I can’t believe I missed the Fall Preview! I meant to buy it - I have every Fall Preview issue since the early 90s. (I know, I’m bad).

  29. Jill Shalvis Says:

Bailey, I’ll save my TV Guide just for you!

  30. Diana Says:

This season I will try to keep up with: “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” (which always makes me cry without fail), “The Biggest Loser,” and “Gilmore Girls.” Recently I’ve been tuning in to “Project Runway,” which is coming to an end soon, “Flava of Love” (it’s like a train wreck that I can’t look away from), and “Nip Tuck.” I still can’t believe what Sean did, but I guess the show wouldn’t be “Nip Tuck” if the characters were actually faithful to their partners. I love TV, so if I let myself, I could get into more TV shows. I’m trying not to, though.

I LOVE magazines, too. I’ve cut down recently because I’m trying to not spend so much, but my weaknesses are US Weekly and People. Love that celebrity gossip.

I prefer books with happy endings.

  31. Cryna Says:

I watch very little TV - so other than what I read about the programs on a couple of the threads I am on I know nothing about what is going on. I do watch the hockey games on TV…… especially when my team is playing.

As for books, I love to read books that have the HEA ending……..LOL

  32. jules Says:

Project Runway, even thought last season was better, UFC ultimate fighting championship, Grey’s Anatomy, and CSI the originial.

  33. Joyce Says:

My tv watching is similar to my reading. I like romantic/suspense/action/military. So I like all the CSI’s, Law and Order, Bones, Numbers, Criminal Minds etc. But I also like sci-fi like SG-1, so I enjoy Deidre Knight’s Parallel Series. Humor is also very important too so there’s 2 1/2 men, Til Death. I also enjoy humor in my books, so I enjoyed Out of this World.

  34. Jill Shalvis Says:

Oh I’m so glad you liked Out Of This World, Joyce!

  35. Pat Says:

Jill, with your busy family and all the t.v. shows you watch, how the heck do you find time to write? I dont know how you do it and you are not like some authors who only put out a book a year; you are keeping us entertained with several.

  36. Kate C Says:

    Hi Jill!

Sorry I’m late…okay, I never miss House and I’m getting hooked on Standoff because I love that guy. Last week was sheer agony because I had to constantly switch between Dancing with the Stars, America’s Next Top Model, The Biggest Loser and…something else. Criminal Minds? Can’t remember, so obviously that one’s not on the list. LOL

Also watched Shark and thought it was really good but not sure I’ll get hooked. I’m also a CSI junkie and I love CSI Miami except when they get bugs, they are truly revolting. Oh, and Two and a half Men, and Bones, and American Idol, and I’ll stop now!

  37. kim h Says:

hi Jill. me too. and book slut.
love svu, prison break, game shows, sports and more sports. love pop culture

  38. Jill Says:

One of these days I’ll learn to program my VCR or get Tivo because choosing between shows on some evenings is agony for me too! The other night I had to flip between House and Dancing With the Stars, and tonight I’ll have to flip between Extreme Home Makeover and Amazing Race. Torture, I tell you.

  39. Karen G Says:

I don’t watch very much TV. Mostly the morning news shows. I enjoy books with happy endings. I want to be left with a good feeling.

  40. Gail Says:

MUST have the happy ending. TV or books, it’s a requirement.
