No Chick Flicks

From Wikipedia:

The term chick flick is slang, often derisive, for a movie that appeals mainly to women or young girls, either by design or in popular opinion. Chick flicks sometimes focus on romance or relationships. Sometimes they have many female characters and/or a female lead. Sometimes they are romances or romantic comedies. Sometimes they are patterned after the story of Cinderella (e.g. The Princess Diaries, A Cinderella Story, Ever After).

I don’t usually watch the type of movie called a “chick flick”. I’m not sure why. As much as I love reading romance (I read almost exclusively romance. Like 99.999999% romance) when it comes to watching movies, I prefer big, dumb, blow ‘em up action movies to any type of romance.

Jerry Maguire or Armageddon?

Well… I’ve watched Armageddon several times. I’ve never watched Jerry Maguire, Dances with Wolves, Last of the Mohicans, The Bridges of Madison County, or Bridget Jones’ Diary. (I actually had to Google “Tom Cruise” so I could spell the JM title correctly.)

I’m not sure why I love reading romances so much, but really don’t care to watch them on the big screen. When cable came up with “The Love Stories” channel, I shook my head. I couldn’t imagine many channels that I’d be less interested in watching. It’s not that I wouldn’t enjoy the movies. I saw Ever After and loved it. But it wasn’t my choice and I wouldn’t have picked it if I were the decision maker.

It works in reverse, too. I loved watching Sahara. That was great fun. I enjoy Jurassic Park, too. I’ve no desire at all to read those books. Why? Because they’re not romances.

Why do you think that is? I’d ask you if I’m weird, but I know the answer already, so I’ll ask you something else instead. Do any of you share these quirks preferences?

I love all kinds of movies - romantic comedies, dramas, action/adventure, doesn’t matter. I’m actually wishing there was a really good romantic movie out there right now. It’s been awhile since there was anything worth watching.

My reading preferences are about 95% romance. The other 5% would be things like biographies, YA books, tomes like “The Historian”. Mostly I just want the romance. But my movies can be across the board.

    Hi, Sylvia -
I got the book today. Thank you so much.

And no you are not weird; altho it is suprising that you dont like chik flicks since you do write romance. Oh, well…maybe you like to take a different path from what you do for a living??????

I like chik flix as well as suspense or courtroom drama. No violence or scary movies for me.

  3. Danny Says:

    Hi Sylvia,

I read to 98 % percent romance and the rest are fantasy novel like the series by Jennifer Roberson & the Dragonlance sage.

My favorite kind of movies are romantic comedies, animated movies (especially Disney), fantasy (LOTR, Dragonheart)

  4. Alison Says:

Okay, you need to watch Last of the Mohicans. It is all action, adventure, suspense, guts and gore, with only a bit of romance thrown in, but great romance when it’s there! And I say this as someone who doesn’t watch chick flicks at all - though I love Jerry Maguire and Bridget Jones’s Diary (which is so hilarious because of Bridget’s character - wonder if it’s a Renee Zellweger thing) If I go to the theater, it’s to see Pirates or Harry Potter or Batman, etc. Even my Netflix rental queue is mostly BBC shows or suspense/thriller flicks.

  5. Angie-la Says:

I am a movie fanatic. I love everything from kick-a$$ action to sappy romance.
The only thing I cannot watch is horror flicks. Which I used to love. BTW, until Nightmare on Elm Street. For some reason the whole Freddy Kruger thing flipped me out…maybe it was the whole “he comes while you sleep” thing. Brrr! Just cannot watch those psycho slice ‘em, dice ‘em movies….
But I don’t mind blood and gore if it is, like in a battle. Weird, right? :)

I agree with Alison, you have to see Mohicans..it is awesome and the love story is not the main focus.

  6. Lori D. Says:

I do not watch many movies but when I do, I do like the chik flicks - Lifetime especially has good ones as well as having good suspense movies.

  7. Amy Garvey Says:

The only thing I cannot watch is horror flicks. Which I used to love.

I was just going to say, I’ve developed a real obsession with scary movies lately. Not gory blood-drippers, but stuff like The Others. Spooky-scary. (Although I always love them this time of year.)

I’m with you, too, Sylvia. I can watch a chick flick every once in a while, but I adore action stuff — Jurassic Park is one of my all-time favorites! The Italian Job, The Bourne Identity, The Matrix — all movies I’d watch before a chick flick.

  8. Kathleen Says:

For it depends on what mood I am in. Sometimes I’ll go for a chick flick and others action adventure or comedy.

    When I read, it is 99.9% romance:grin::grin:

  9. EC Sheedy Says:

Snakes On A Plane. Loved it! When those oxygen masks came down . . .

  10. Michele L. Says:

I love all movies! Romance, action/adventure, blow-em up, fantasy/sci-fi/comedy/kids films but my favorite things to read are romances.

I think your preference to action/blow-em up films is just that you like to be entertained in a different way when watching movies. It could be it is your release/outlet and it relaxes you and gets you stimulated again to write. No matter what it is, thats normal. Not everybody likes to watch the same stuff.

  11. kim h Says:

i do like all kinds of movies, but tend to pick up romantic comedies. i do like action and kung fu movies. love jet li, he is a hottie.

  12. Cryna Says:

I read about 99% romance books……and as for movies I tend to like the romantic comedies better than the blow them up. I have watched them though, but absolutely cannot go horror movies……

  13. Helen Mac Says:

Hi, Sylvia - I read all sorts of books and will watch a variety of movies - but no violence or sadistic types.

  14. Linda Says:

    Hi Sylvia,

I love to read all types of books except for the M/M or F/F. I love all kinds of movies as well. I enjoy the chick flicks even though my fiance isn’t to fond of them

    Hugssss
    Linda.H.

  15. Maureen Says:

    Hi Sylvia,

I also don’t watch too many romance type movies because the books are so much better. You know what the characters are thinking and feeling in a book.

  16. Estella Says:

I don’t watch movies, but I love romance books!

  17. Amy Says:

If I have my choice, I’ll pick the chick-flick everytime. Loved Under the Tuscan Sun but I don’t care about reading the book. Once I see any movie (Jurassic Park included [at least 50 times]) I do not wanna read the book.

  18. Patty Lacey Says:

I think that chick flicks are always associated with someone dying or falling in love and then someone dying. I love a good romance, Ever After great, I love a good comedy, romance mixed in, wonderful. I don’t really care for any crazy blow em up, killing movie, so I guess I have my preferences too.

  19. Nicola Marsh Says:

I adore reading romance, writing it and watching it. Mind you, I really enjoy a good action/thriller flick but chick flicks do it for me every time!

  20. Helen L. Says:

I read mainly romance, some romantic suspense.

  21. HelenKay Dimon Says:

I’m the same as Sylvia on this point. My movies need to have things that go BOOM. Things should explode. Cars should race. Guns, fights - all good. For some reason, despite my love of romance novels, I have no interest in chick flicks. None. Couldn’t even tell you the last one I watched.

I fear this says more about my personality than I’m comfortable sharing… :???:

  22. Jennifer K. Says:

These days my reading is about 90% romance and 10% mystery or other fiction. If you’d asked me about 5 years ago what I read, it would have been about 99% mysteries and 1% other.

I’m not the biggest movie watcher. I do tend to gravitate more to the action-adventure (James Bond, X-Men, etc.) or war films (Saving Private Ryan, Gettysburg). I’ll watch a chick-flick once it’s on TV … but I have to have heard good things about it.

  23. Amy S. Says:

I love watching any kind of movie. Horror is my favorite. Love romantic comedies.

  24. Lisa Says:

I’m with Sylvia and HelenKay on this one - can’t honestly remember the last time I sat through a film that wasn’t a big-budget blow-em-up. My entire DVD collection really looks like it should belong to a guy - Bond, Bourne, Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, X-Men….. My book collection on the other hand is about 95 percent romance! Never really tried to analyse why though.

  25. Patty B. Says:

I do not have much time for t.v. but like varied types of movies as long as they are not violent when I do have the time.
